It very well could be the best unheard Stones stuff ever. My fingers are crossed. BUT, if they are giving us two new songs and promoting that, what are the chances we really do get gems on that bonus disc?

They would have to have been finished for some time and ready to go... it's possible. But, I don't think they had time to do any over-dubs and cleaning up of demos and unfinished tracks... They did surprise us with the live releases, so they can keep shit tight!!!

No need to purchase GRRR.  Let's get a 25 th anniversary deluxe edition of Talk is Cheap next year!  Unreleased tracks - perhaps the original Almost Hear You Sigh, maybe there's a 12 minute version of It Means a Lot floating around.  Expand Live at the Palladium to the full concert.  Bring it!

Anyone who has not witnessed the genius of the Palladium DVD needs to catch it ASAP. It's one of the best performances by any band EVER. That's the Keith that made me a devoted fan.

Reviewing my earlier comments about the bonus disc - it will be stuff we already have. If it was rare, unreleased stuff they would have mentioned it in the press release.

I still love this band, but they let me down.

Gazz - But not according to their guitarist and second main songwriter, who reckons that its 'officially' 2013..

Ok ... so when have you known a publicity machine to tout a movie, a greatest hits package,  a book, and a special set of shows in honer of a 50th anniversary one year .... and go on to create another media event such as a record breaking tour the next year as the anniversary year??. There will be t-shirts from these concerts stating such...and everything. They changed their logo this year for it and everything... what more do you want? It either is or it isn't mate. Seems to me Mick and Keith were just passing the statement off because there was no full fledged tour this year and they really didn't want to go into detail why? (other than saying they aren't "ready").

>

Gazza - Yeah, theyre going to make that new album and tour behind it. Right?   Smiley
Four shows to cash in on a money spinning anniversary and then next year when nobody cares about a new record, it'll be something 'new'.....riiiiiiiiiight

Why would folks care about a record one year and next year not?? If The Stones are going to make a record.... 12 short months, at this stage in the game will make no difference in the public's desire for it. There is either a want for it or not - so that point is pretty straight forward.

Gazza - Um.....the Licks tour in 2002/03?

This only lends credit to this point...... Licks was officially released, conceived, and started in "2002" (their 40th). How do you start your 50th in 2013?? Math seems a bit off...

Gazza - Yes. The tour will be done. As will the Stones as a live band.

What tour?? ...If your pretty sure they are going to tour based on your reliable sources (which I as well as all of us envy you for  Wink ) why would you not think they just might record an album for it?? Gazza ...they still feel the need to go into the studio. The two new singles will do "very" little, if anything at all in selling "GRRR".

The fact that they feel the need to go into the studio and release a new product for their live act is as evident as the lines in Keith's face. Otherwise, why bother flying to Paris to record songs for a week. It will do nothing as far as sales are concerned... it will do nothing as far as selling concert tickets.... they already have the public in the bag as far as interest goes. The two new songs aren't It isn't going to captivate a new audience or gain them any brand new fans. They know that. ...so again the question arises WHY go through all the bother??

Would you fly to Mexico and work for a week for nothing...? Would you do it if you felt no interest in it at all?? What if there was really nothing to gain from it? Would you and your three mates, and a few others all do that? The answer is no. It's pretty evident they still hold regard in releasing something new with each venture..... why would their last major harra be any different?

They go into the studio because they feel compelled to and they still have interest in that. Sure their output in the past 20 years has been nill ...but every time these guys start something up.... guess where they head first.... The studio - Every time we go through this and I still don't see how your not agreeing with me to at least some degree based on The Stones actions and more recently once again their basically not necessary at all studio outing.

Miserable as sin, some of you. 'One Last Shot (From My Huge Arsehole)' is much awaited.
'Grrr' has the most visually-effective Stains' album cover since 'Some Grrrls'.
The 'Grrr' is (Keith's old favourite) Grrreta Garbo, shirley?

Could they have picked a dumber title though? Is that the sound they made when management came by and informed them it was that time every decade or so when a greatest hits must be released. What is this, number 20 in that vein or something? Oh yeah and the cover is almost worse than this:

Ian

I KNOW the Stones 50th anniversary is 2012.  Not that it matters.

Its the band who decided to 'move the goalposts' and apparently 'decide' that it beings in january 2013 - even though theyve spent most of 2012 cashing in on THIS year's anniversary with books, movies, art exhibitions, archive live downloads and now a greatest hits package with a few shows.

The reason for doing so was simply because it was a feeble way of acknowledging that they werent up to playing shows at the time. Which they now seem to have reneged on as, whilst Keith said in the same interview they wouldnt play shows in 2012, now it appears a certainty that they will.

You're getting unnecessary anal about this. My point was that its unusual for the Stones to begin some form of touring or performance related project and then finish it in the same calendar year. The Licks tour was to mark their 40th anniversary as a band. It ran from 2002-03. So, its no big deal that a 50th anniversary project would run from 2012-13.

The notion that this 'anniversary' is going to be done and dusted at the end of 2012 and the Stones are going to somehow re-launch themselves with a new record and new tour in 2013 is beyond absurd. The shows in Nov/dec are a way of getting them used to playing live again and will (ideally) be a springboard for a continuation into 2013 where ideally they'll tour to mark their 50th anniversary as a band. There's no way in the world theyre going to go and make a new record to tour behind in 2013.  There isnt time to do it for a start. And It doesnt MATTER when a 'celebration' of an anniversary begins and ends.

Its over. The Stones as a creative force making or even caring about a new record are done. Their target audience doesnt care about new material either. After all this time and with the evidence staring you in the face, I honestly cant imagine how you still can't see it.  This is a brand, not a band. A multi-national corporation with guitars and drums.

"Go to ALL the bother" of going to Paris and working on TWO songs for about four days? Are you serious?   Grin

Call it a guilty conscience or maybe a request from UMG that their contractual obligation compilation has SOME new material on it (which is the norm for Greatest Hits albums these days). It certainly doesnt smack me as an indication of a band who ' go into the studio because they feel compelled to and they still have interest'

>Sre their output in the past 20 years has been nill ...but every time these guys start something up.... guess where they head first.... The studio - Every time we go through this and I still don't see how your not agreeing with me to at least some degree based on The Stones actions and more recently once again their basically not necessary at all studio outing.

You dont see how your first sentence contradicts the rest? Seriously?

Theyve made FOUR albums of new material in the entire second half of a fifty year career.

FOUR FUCKING ALBUMS.

They release new material to 'justify' a tour and to give the impression theyre a current act. Which they still were to a large degree up until the late 90s.  The era of the Stones touring to promote a new album ended in the early 80s. Their tours now generate far more money than record sales, so the PRODUCT theyre promoting is the live show, NOT the recorded material. The MO of the band's reason for existence changed when they got back together in the late 80s - ie, generating millions of dollars in revenue as a touring act, with the occasional record thrown in as an excuse for promoting the tour.  This will be the second time in the last three tours theyve gone on the road without a new studio album - and on the other occasion, they basically gave up playing songs from it after a few months. They dont even have a record contract which obligates them to make NEW music - thats how much of a compulsion and interest they have to be artistically creative.

The Grrr! tour or whatever the fuck it'll be called will be effectively Licks Part III.

Without a new album, this entire year was a big letdown. Huge for me. They are content to rest on the past and take a nostalgic trip. There's no love anymore for what they do together. Keith was off doing his own thing and Mick was doing Superheavy. They have reached the end of the line.

Didnt surprise me to be honest.

This year was all about celebrating the band's history.

If theyve been disinterested in the present for the last 15 years, 2012 was never going to be the time to rekindle that enthusiasm.

Its been common knowledge since the end of last year that there would be a greatest hits release in 2012. Its natural in this day and age that when those sort of releases come out, theres usually a couple of new songs. Its also reasonable that UMG would release such a record as there isnt one issued by that company before and there is no career-spanning Stones compilation in print.

From that perspective, when that all gets confirmed, I'm not underwhelmed.  The fact that theyve issued a compilation is in itself not unreasonable. I dont expect to get a new Rolling Stones album as they arent contractually obliged to make one and havent been since they signed with Universal in 2009.

The downer for this release is a) the godawful title, b) the abomination of a cover and c) that there is no 'bonus' material confirmed. The rumoured bonus DVD of video footage or promo clips or whatever would have been something. But at the minute, there's a vague tease of a bonus disc on the Super Deluxe/Super Priced edition - which, for some bizarre reason, they didnt give any insight about on the press release, when thats the ONE item thats potentially likely to reel in the band's core fanbase.  Thats IF there's unreleased material on it - if it isnt then its a total fucking waste of time and a hugely missed opportunity.

All in all, I dont think we've done too bad as long as you dont just confine the band's 50th anniversary celebration' to JUST 2012. It started in late 2011 with the Live in Texas DVD, Some Girls deluxe and Brussels being issued in the same week and by 2013 we'll probably have some kind of a tour. And there's still the movie and a few shows to come in 2012.

2013 will have a better economy, I wouldn't be surprised if deep down, a while ago, the decisions of health and new music, included looking at the real bottom line... when is the best time to tour and sell tickets to shows... 2012 isn't it... when was the last time The Stones toured the USA during an election year? When was the last time they toured during a bad economy or right after it started to rebound? none of that is probably a coincidence... Jagger is very aware of markets and poltics worldwide!

Theyve only ever done it twice.

1964 - on their first tour when hardly anyone noticed, and in 1972.

The economy issue is more relevant now than its ever been for the simple reason that during previous recessions, the Stones charged much the same price for tickets as everyone else.

Now its a much harder sell. Especially when you throw their age and doubts about their physical abilities into the mix.

Still no word or clue about this mysterious 'bonus disc' - which in the UK anyway you can only get if you spend £100 on the deluxe edition.

However, the exciting news is that the brilliant 'iconic artwork' will be available as a '3d augmented reality sleeve'.....

...

from rs.com :

In celebration of the Rolling Stones' incredible journey, an innovative campaign has been launched to reveal their GRRR! Greatest Hits album sleeve using 3D Augmented Reality.

Using the free uView app fans can scan the GRRR! sleeve and watch the stunning imagery come to life in 3D animation right before their eyes. To download the free app click here for iOS and here for Android. The campaign will have further exciting updates coming soon.
