Wow what an epic disappointment!
What has happened (musically) between 40 licks and now, to justify another greatest hits package

Even 40 Licks had 4 new songs….2 new songs dismal.

I could have overlooked the album cover with more original content

I woke up to this.

As some one asked above - who signs off on these ideas? I presume Mick is the final arbiter of Stones product. I can only shake my head with rueful resignation.

So this is the way the world ends, not with a (bigger) bang but a grrr

I'm actually starting to think the Stones may be looking at this as Cocksucker Blues 2. Maybe they owed one more greatest hits package to their label and figured we'll put a cartoon monkey on the cover, well release a song equally childish in name and call it "Gloom and Doom" and then well call the album "Grrr". That will really fuck over our label! Maybe they are just fucking with the record label? One can hope can't we?  you made a grown man cry

Ok... The cover is bad enough, but the title ..."Grrr"????  Wtf ?? They couldn't come up with ANY idea or ANY concept or ANY name other than this....?? So your supposed to tell a buddy "oh yeah... I went out and got Grrr today...". It sounds THAT dumb.

Again, I am embarrassed about this to others who know I am a Stones fan. Sure they are outrageous, funny... whatever but that was back when. Right now we needed something with a touch of taste. We got this???? .... How on earth did they conjure up or sign off to this??? Who's idea was this and how on this planet did it pass??

It's fifth grade shit man. It's that stupid -

Always interesting to see people upset/annoyed by four letters.

Grrr means 'Grrls with greasy growlers in Grimsby' only if you choose it to be, shirley?

Rastafarians of course understand all this Grrr-before-the-roar malarkey.

'Gloom & Doom' and 'One Last Shot (From My Huge Arsenal)' are splendid titles.

WaiteringOnAFriend, the four letter word line is great.

Changing the subject: what's to be embarrassed about? It's not like GRRR ( Grin ) it's "our" compilation, it's theirs. I still think it's sort of funny. "Ugly" album cover and dumbest album title ever. But it's not the worst event in history.

The Stones won't be remembered by this product  if there's justice. Maybe some of the songwriters need money to buy a new property. Who doesn't want a new property, or a new horse??

Seriously now: I won't buy this; I didn't buy 40 Licks. I haven't made it through Shine A Light yet, and SuperHeavy wasn't funny. You make the call. It's not like they're pulling a gun in front of you to purchase this. I love the band for their incredible musical catalogue, and you have to admit that apes are conventionally ugly. (They're beautiful, like octupuses they are magnetic to the eye.) But Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ron are old... and maybe they don't think of themselves as a recording unit studio anymore. Or they really don't care anymore.

I hope I'm wrong. There was A Bigger Bang after Fourty Licks. I'm just saying.

I just can't see Mick signing off on this. I really can't? Can anyone eles? I mean, we waited all this time for this bullshit? ...an album called "Grrr"... and this picture of an ape??? It's seriously like this is some big joke on us and the real title and image will come later but it isn't. I am still in shock. Charlie was an art student...how could they know the stages floor in Four Flicks for the Licks tour was too "strong and B-like" yet they signed off on this?? I am not even excited of hearing the new songs anymore.

I'm lost and beside myself. I just don't get what they were thinking... who came up with this concept???

I showed the new album cover to my hubby when he got home.

One look - Uh, Ang you don't get it?
No.
It's the 800lb gorilla in the room.  It's over, they know it and they know the fans know this is it - but no one wants to admit it yet.

I hope he's right.  That makes sense, but I still thinks it's ugly.

A picture of a fucking snare drum and a title of "Mr. Watts Greatest Hits" would have impressed me much more than this. As a matter of fact that would be brilliant. Perverted Charlie Shit! piss off really?

Has anyone pointed out yet that gorillas say "Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!" and not "Grrr!".

You're missing the point Gazza;

The gorilla with his tongue sticking out stands for the utter contempt the bandcorperation has fur us.

The Grrr, is just a general reply you can give to anything stones related.

Example:

Hey, the stones are touring again & tix are onyl usd 500,00

Answer: Grrrr

or

Hey, have you seen that FINE limited edition box of Brussels? Only usd 1.500

Answer: Grrr or alternatively: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I wish. Sadly not. They're contracted to UMG for five years, signing a deal in mid 2009. The contract (£15 million or $15 million, cant recall how much) gave UMG rights to their post-ABKCO back catalogue. There was no legal obligation on the Stones to record and release new music (which probably explains why the advance was so low compared to previous deals), so effectively they signed up for a reissue program.

Every time they change distributor - and they did it in 1977, 1983, 1991 and 2009 - the new company repackages their old material and will also put out a compilation. The previous company's albums are deleted. So, there currently are no post-ABKCO Rolling Stones compilations available as 'Forty Licks' has been out of print since about 2007 or so (as are the other EMI compilations - 'Jump Back' and 'Rarities Vol. 1')

Theyve actually done reasonably well, sales wise, with UMG. The remastered series of their albums which were rolled out in 2010 sold poorly but of the two deluxe reissues  'Exile' ended up being a number 1 album (absolutely unheard of for a reissue) and I think 'Some Girls' did very well too. Theyve been a far better company to the Stones promotion-wise than EMI were.

THIS 'Grrr!' nonsense though is another matter. And its wishful thinking on some people's parts to believe that UMG slipped this one out with no band input. The band chose the songs for 40 Licks, and I'm sure they did for this one too - and they would have had to approve the outsourced artwork and album title. No one is going to put out a release at this stage with The Rolling Stones' name on it without their approval.

I'm still trying to get my head around these various formats. Even when I started this thread yesterday, I was so stunned by the album title I didnt notice there was a 4-CD, 80-track version for about two hours afterwards.

But maybe I'm still missing something and no one seems to have mentioned this - but the super deluxe version appears to have FIVE CD's, one of which is tantalising described as a 'bonus' CD.

GRRR! GREATEST HITS FORMATS:

50 Track 3CD album

3CD / 50 tracks in a digipack with 24 page booklet

50 Track 3CD Deluxe Edition

3CD / 50 tracks in a DVD size box with 36 page hardback book and 5 postcards

Super Deluxe Edition Box Set

4CD / 80 tracks plus Bonus CD, 7″ Vinyl, Hardback book, Poster, 5 postcards in a presentation box

12” Vinyl Box Set

5x 12″ Vinyl / 50 tracks in a casebound LP Box

Is this right or have they just worded this clumsily? '80 tracks PLUS bonus CD'

3 CD = 50 tracks
4 CD = 80 tracks (presumably the running order will be changed to fill all the discs as they couldnt get 30 songs on one cd unless there's some serious butchering of tracks)
5 CD = 80 tracks plus the 'bonus' CD.

Dare we even begin to hope that a bonus CD might consist of something they havent released before?  Its quite possible as getting hardcore fans to fork out £150 for the super deluxe version appears to be the only way of buying it.

I came on here this morning without having seen the announcement and I thought the site header was some fan-made thing. Couldn't they have done a collage of the band members faces/famous looks over the years even? I'm not really as annoyed by this as some people are though - it's funny in a way. The announcement was always going to be the greatest hits or the November shows anyway.

I guess it's going to take a while for some to get this particular monkey off their back.  Wink

This whole thing is hilarious!  Look up "800lb. Gorilla" on wikipedia.

And I've realized I just might be buying a couple copies of this for some young people in my life who deserve their own Rolling Stones catalog.
