NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell named a candidate for Time Magazine's 2012 'Person of the Year'
By Katherine Terrell, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune
on November 27, 2012 at 9:56 PM

New Orleans Saints fans might not agree, but Time Magazine has taken notice of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Time listed Goodell as one of 40 candidates for its annual "Person of the Year."

...
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is a candidate for Time Magazine's 2012 'Person of the Year'

Bill Kostroun, The Associated Press The designation goes to the person, idea, group or object that "most influenced the news this year, for better or worse," according to its website. 2011's winner was "The Protestor."

Readers can vote for Goodell or other candidates to influence the magazine's decision as to who to put on its cover, although the final say ultimately goes to the editors. Goodell isn't a very popular choice so far, with 95 percent of voters saying "no way."

Time described Goodell as a man who "has stamped his imprint all over the most valuable sports brand in the U.S."

"When he became NFL commissioner in 2006, he took a hard line against player misconduct, handing out steep suspensions for bad off-field behavior," the website description said. "Now, after evidence has emerged that head contact sustained in football could be responsible for long-term brain damage, Goodell is preaching player safety: he has enacted rule changes that seek to prevent dangerous hits and went so far as to suspend the coach of the New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton, for an entire season because of the team's bounty program."

Votes can be cast until Dec. 12, and the winner will be announced Dec. 14

9:45PM EST November 28. 2012 - Oh, to enjoy the luxuries of chartered flights and buses.

Upscale travel is one of the many luxuries that NFL players enjoy. But the New Orleans Saints received a rude welcome to Atlanta ahead of Thursday night's game with the Falcons when their ride was egged Wednesday by airport workers.

Backup quarterback Chase Daniel was the first Saints player to tweet about it: "Wow, as we're boarding buses on the Tarmac @ Atlanta airport, we start getting eggs thrown @ us by airport workers! Guess they do hate us!"

Tight end Jimmy Graham chimed in shortly after.

"Bus just got egged after landing in ATL by the ramp workers," Graham wrote on Twitter. Classy! 'RISE Up' smh."

The Saints surely must have been riled up until they remembered that someone else would clean up the mess. Back to life at the top.

New Orleans Saints team charter reportedly egged in Atlanta
By Jeff Duncan, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune The Times-Picayune
on November 28, 2012

If you're questioning the intensity of the rivalry between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints, check out this tweet from Saints backup quarterback Chase Daniel. It came just minutes after the team's charter flight touched down in Atlanta on Wednesday night.

@ChaseDaniel: Wow, as we're boarding buses on the Tarmac @ Atlanta airport, we start getting eggs thrown @ us by airport workers! Guess they do hate us!

Saints teammates Jermon Bushrod and Jimmy Graham re-tweeted Daniel's message, which was tweeted at 7:48 p.m. Wednesday.

Graham confirmed Daniel's tweet a few minutes later:

@JimmyGraham: Bus just got egged after landing in ATL by the ramp workers. Classy! "RISE Up" smh

Linebacker Will Herring also confirmed the incident:

@wherring54 First time my bus has been egged by opposing fans! Tomorrow should be fun!! #WhoDatNation

Not all of the Saints were put off by the incident. Wide receiver Joseph Morgan seemed to have fun with it:

@jmthegreat How do eggs make people mad? Cool and hilarious prank #childhood #memories

Nevertheless, Thursday night's Saints-Falcons game should be intense, considering the national stage, recent history of the NFC South rivals and stakes at hand. This incident should only stoke the competitive fires even more.

It adds another chapter to one of the NFL's budding rivalries.

After the Saints' 31-27 victory on Nov. 11, Saints linebacker Scott Shanle referred to the Falcons as "our little brothers" in an interview with Yahoo!Sports and called their pregame actions in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome that day "classless."

Leading up to the game, Falcons wide receiver Roddy White told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "I don't like nothing about the Saints. The colors. The city. Nothing. But they've got some good food, though. Other than the food, nothing."

Hartsfield Jackson International Airport officials have released a statement:

"It has been confirmed that eggs were thrown at a New Orleans Saints' charter bus as they departed the ramp last night.  Airline workers were in the ramp area.  Airport and airline officials are investigating the incident, and further information will be forthcoming.   Meanwhile, Atlanta Police will  augment the airline security presence during the team's departure.   Aviation General Manager Louis Miller emphasized that this behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

When asked if the perps will be disciplined, Airport officials responded "eggzactly".

New Orleans Saints' loss to Atlanta Falcons is on Drew Brees
By Jeff Duncan, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune The Times-Picayune

Atlanta -- Stick around the NFL long enough and you'll see eventually see it all. Even Drew Brees throwing five interceptions in a single game.

It happened. I watched it with my very own eyes at the Georgia Dome on Thursday night.

Brees wasn't part of the reason the New Orleans Saints lost to the Falcons 23-13. He was THE reason they lost.

Not only did he throw five picks for the first time in his 12-year NFL career but his landmark streak of consecutive games with a touchdown pass was snapped at 54.

Brees might play the rest of his career and never have another night like this. It started poorly and never got any better. The Saints' opening drive of the night ended in a Brees' interception, and their final two drives ended the same way.

He threw passes high, low and behind his receivers. Worse, he even did the unthinkable, botching a scoring opportunity inside the Falcons' 5-yard line before halftime with a mental mistake.

Brees has never played this poorly as a Saint. Ever. Nothing close.

The only thing Brees didn't botch on this night was the postgame press conference, where he admirably fell on the sword.

"I pride myself on being a great decision-maker and guy that's going to help us win the game, not be a detriment by turning the ball over like that," Brees said.

That this dreadful performance came in prime time against a division rival with so much at stake makes the effort even more mind-boggling. Brees typically dominates in these situations. This time the dominator was the dominated.

Never has such an efficient quarterback played so inefficiently. Brees' final passer rating was a ghastly 37.6, about a third of what he usually calculates. That's the lowest of his Saints career and his worst rating since 2005.

The five interceptions matched the most ever thrown by a Saints quarterback. Think about that one for awhile. Not even Gary Cuozzo or Richard Todd or the Billy Joes had ever thrown this many picks in a game. The only other Saints quarterback to accomplish this ignominious feat? Archie Manning did it twice.

And it could have been six or seven if Robert McClain could have held on to another wayward Brees pass in the second quarter or John Abraham had not jumped offsides in the fourth quarter, negating an interception by Corey Peters.

"It doesn't really matter how they happened, the responsibility is mine," Brees said. "And that the first time that's ever happened to me. It's extremely disappointing. A couple of critical mistakes that end up costing us the game and I'm OK saying that because I have to hold myself accountable."

When Brees wasn't scanning images of the Falcons' defense on the bench, he could found standing on the sideline with hands on hips, the look on his face a mixture of disgust and incredulity.

It was the second poor performance in five days for Brees. His two pick-sixes sunk the Saints against the 49ers on Sunday. Who would've thought he'd lay an even bigger egg four nights later.

"That's a very good quarterback that is normally a very efficient player," Falcons Coach Mike Smith said. "I can't say enough about it."

Brees even struggled with the mental game, as well. After the Saints fought back from a 17-0 hole and had a chance to pull within a touchdown or field goal just before halftime, Brees, usually masterful in the 2-minute drill, uncharacteristically botched the time management. He threw an ill-advised pass to Darren Sproles in the middle of the field with 17 seconds left and no timeouts. The Saints' scoring chances died, along with the clock, at the Falcons' 3.

"Honestly, I thought we had more time than we did," Brees said. "That's my mistake. That can't happen."

It was that kind of night for Brees, which is probably why he was the first player to exit the field after the clock expired. He raced to triumphant Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and congratulated him, then offered a brief handshake to Tony Gonzalez, and that was it. He was gone, out the tunnel almost before some players even managed to make it to midfield.

We've become so accustomed to Brees' greatness that we expect miracles from No. 9 every game. We expect perfection, or something close to it, from Brees when the ball is snapped. When it doesn't happen, we are perplexed, dumbfounded, astonished even.

The Saints simply can not win when Brees plays this way. In fact, they can't win when he plays even close to this poorly. The Saints are 1-9 in games in which he's thrown three or more interceptions.

Their only win came in the magical 2009 Super Bowl season when seemingly everything the Saints did turned to pixie dust. Those days seem like distant history today.

This loss might have sunk the Saints' season. They're now 5-7 with no margin for error the rest of the way. And their fearless leader, the man once deemed Breesus by his loyal legion of followers, suddenly looks extraordinarily human.

After four straight losses, it was about time we let ya'll win one.  LOL

Bro, I honestly did not think we had won that until the clock hit 0:00.

Bress was crackin' up last night, tryin' too hard to make something happen instead of using his usual finesse.

I'd be ok with seeing Alabama whoop Ga tomorrow. Every Ga fan I know/knew is a total douche nozzle.

Fuck a bunch of Bama..........Go Dawgs! Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?...........And Stanford!!

Horrible tragedy in Kansas City yesterday. Why they insist on playing the game today I don't know.

Watch Ryan's last stand tonight as the Pats trounce the Jets and the Fat Man is fired on Friday........(course my turkey day predictions are always wrong)

he ain't getting fired and i hate the jets... GM goes first all one has to do is spend a morning listening to either of the NY am sports stations to know who is under fire. woody johnson likes rex and he could loose out and keep his job this year. Tannenbaum has made the bad personnel choices..

geeze i knew most everyone here knew how a team works....pats fans should be grateful today for Mo Lewis's big hit on Drew circa 2001 and Belli for sticking with Brady after his start other wise ya got nothing. Without a QB teams go nowhere plain and simple. My team I love is prime example. and even more so with all the stinkin rule changes coddling them..... funny though carl banks yesterday on air advocated no bounty mind you but for one of the safeties to knock welkers head off with a legal but hardest hit possible first time he comes across the middle take the 15 yard penalty but change the game....won't matter as jets can't score any better than we can. and in my mind welkers a moving target which is why he doesn't get blown up more.

so all football fans today great day of games, food, music, and if your team has a good QB be thankful!!!!

So let's take stock......Yes, Bledsoe took a mean hit that day from Mr. Lewis, in reality he's quite lucky to actually be alive.  The Pats fans are quite grateful of this, as well as the intestinal fortitude that Coach B had to start a 6th round draft pick at qb, who Coach believed in.  When Bledsoe was healthy, Coach could have brought him back, and he did in the Conference Championship vs. The Stillers....The rest is history.  Confident ownership, coaching and a steady qb, that's what it takes.  I heard a very interesting stat today.  Since your boy Dan Marino left the "Phins, you've had 17 QB's & the Pats have had 2.  IMHO, "Phins missed a golden opportunity to not allow Parcells to do more with the team, the whole grocery thing in Miami & who knows what could've happened.  He was at the end of his rope, however I still feel there was a light flickering in him.  Your QB Tanninhill does look good, the coach is a good guy, so here's hoping Phins draft well for the future.   Today, Pats take out the "Phins to win the division for the 10th time in 12 years.  Our two toughest games of the year vs. Texans then the 49rs are on the horizon.......GO PATS!!
