Tough game to watch yesterday but we pulled it out! Hope to pull it out again next week vs Oakland. Saints are a dangerous team and I am concerned.

Report: Former Lions Pro Bowler, actor Alex Karras close to death

By Josh Katzowitz | Blogger

October 8, 2012 10:33 pm ET

...
Karras was a four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle. (AP)

Alex Karras was a four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle, and he is a beloved institution in Detroit, playing his entire 12-year career with the Lions. For folks of my generation, we got to know Karras as George Papadapolis on the 1980s TV show, “Webster,” or as Mongo in “Blazing Saddles.”

Now, Karras, via the Detroit Free Press, reportedly only has a few days to live, suffering from kidney failure and having undergone hospice care at his California home.

“(His kidneys) gave out on him and legs swelled up and his ankles swelled up and arms, so [Susan Clark, his wife] said it doesn't look good. They figured probably a couple weeks,” Tom McInerney, Karras' friend since the 1950s, told the paper.

“He said, ‘I want to go home,' so knowing Alex she made arrangements for him. … She said if you came out here it wouldn't be worth his while because right now he's talking about he wants to see his [deceased] mother and dad, and he's on morphine, he's on oxygen. She said it's maybe a couple, three days at the most.”

Karras is 77, and he's battled with cancer and dementia in recent years.

"The entire Detroit Lions family is deeply saddened to learn of the news regarding the condition of one of our all-time greats, Alex Karras,” the Lions said in a statement. “Perhaps no player in Lions history attained as much success and notoriety for what he did after his playing days as did Alex.

"We know Alex first and foremost as one of the cornerstones to our Fearsome Foursome defensive line of the 1960s and also as one of the greatest defensive linemen to ever play in the NFL. Many others across the country came to know Alex as an accomplished actor and as an announcer during the early years of Monday Night Football.

"We join his legions of fans from both sports and entertainment in prayer and support for Alex, his wife Susan, and his entire family during this most difficult time."

This probably is Karras' most famous post-football scene: http://www.youtube.com/embed/8_RKPGS2vwM?rel=0

SCL, you got me there.  Normally Chiefs fans are the best there are.  I've talked to some friends that were at the stadium and they said there were only part of the crowd were cheering when Cassel went down and the rest got loud when Quinn took the field.  When the volume went up is when the announcers commented on it.  So I think there is some misperception that all 70,000 were cheering for Cassel being down and hurt.

Either way I agree with what Eric Winston said - It's just sick.  I know fans are frustrated with Romeo Crennel insisting on starting Cassel when it's obvious something is wrong with the guy.  He has committed more turnovers on his own than several teams have this year.  I am frustrated too, but I do not want to see the guy hurt.

It's been the talk of local news and local sports radio since Sunday afternoon.  I did see last night that some of the fans who cheered are writing Cassel to appologize - heat of the moment and they didn't realize when they started to cheer that he was in fact knocked out.  There have been several that did on tv here that tried to justify it - but they can't.  One guy couldn't look Len Dawson in the face and say he stood by it.  He was looking at his feet the entire time.

I've been a Chiefs fan since I was a little kid.  Hell, I remember Len Dawson playing just barely.  I've seen this team be so bad that the Missouri state high school champions could put a whippin' on them, but I've never seen what happened on Sunday.  I've been at games where our players and other players have gotten hurt and badly.  You could hear a pin drop in that stadium every time and every time there were cheers for the players' health as they came off the field.

I need that paper bag for more than one reason now.  I never thought I'd be embarrassed by the fans here.

Yerah I always thought KC was real faithful to the Chiefs. But that was a little ugly. On the plus side,I have Jamaal Charles on my fantasy team and he's kicking ass for me........Be even better if he could hold onto the damn ball. Shocked
