MOJO (August 2012) - Brian on cover

In this issue
FREE CD! THE ROOTS OF THE ROLLING STONES: MOJO presents 15 Stones-approved classics with Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Muddy Waters and more!

BRIAN JONES: They were loud, scruffy, wild and dangerous, and they were led by a young, blond-haired grammar school delinquent with a grip on everything. Paul Trynka goes back to the Stones’ earliest years, when Brian Jones was their leader and it was all about the blues.

TOM JONES: How did a young lad from Pontypridd survive TB and the advances of Joe Meek to become a Vegas-conquering ’70s colossus? Tom Doyle talks self-parody, hair dye and guilt with the Voice of the Valleys.

PUBLIC ENEMY: Formed in New York in 1982, they politicised ’80s rap, turning noise into melody and power. Andy Cowan speaks to the architects of rap.

THE TRASHMEN: Two-and-a-half minutes of amped-up doo-wop gibberish, Surfin’ Bird sowed the seeds for garage and punk. Max Décharné talks trash with the men who knew “the bird is the word”.

MELODY GARDOT: In 2003 an horrific road accident left her unable to walk or talk. Now she is one of the most remarkable singers of her generation. Lois Wilson has her emotions stirred.

JOHN LYDON: Back with PiL, railing against the Jubilee reissue of the Sex Pistols’ God Save The Queen, John Lydon is a contrarian and an enigma. Andrew Perry gets behind his mask – but not under his skin.

REVIEWED: Antony & The Johnsons / Syd Arthur / Advance Base / Betty Wright / The Beach Boys / Blur / The Beat / Philadelphia International Records / The Book Of English Folk Songs / The Rolling Stones in photos / Searching For Sugar Man doc / Dexys live / Madonna in the Middle East.

PLUS!: Farewell, Robin Gibb, Donna Summer and Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn / Willie Nelson speaks / In the studio with Jonathan Wilson and Roy Harper / Lisa Marie-Presley’s Self Portrait / Ian Gillan and Jeff Fenholt on Jesus Christ Superstar.

AND FINALLY...how to buy... Hüsker Dü!

Surely not, but I think that was a great initiative by Mojo as nowadays and since a long time ago most of the people think Mick and Keith formed the band and much more people don't know who da fuck was Brian and what he did so congratulations and thanks to the Mojo people for this

Amen to this! Grin Bless you, Voo....Smiley It's just nice for Brian to be recognized like this. I mean, he died almost 43 years ago {can't believe I'm saying that! Sad}, and the young people of today have NO clue that there ever WAS a Brian Jones, and that he was the one who put the band together, named the band, promoted the band, etc. Gotta get my Mojo on with BRIAN!  Grin Cool Thanks, Gazza! Dont know, as I havent bought it yet, but my take on it is :

a) on the eve of the band's 50th 'birthday', there can't be enough Stones 'specials' or 'features' in the music press as a way of recognising it

and

b) any feature on the Stones 50th birthday which chooses to highlight the man who founded the band (despite the revisionist bollocks Keith came out with to the contrary in 'Life') is fine by me.

Of course this magazine teaches something: it tells us that Brian Jones was the long lost brother of Tom Jones (just look at the titles), and of probably Paul Jones as well. And how, twenty five years before the Rolling Stones, the trio of singing brothers (a la Bee Gees) recorded the definitive version of Surfin' Bird (the greatest song ever), produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I found this information at wikipedia.

I don't know why mojoman has his own magazine, though. And maybe we'll never know...

Never undertstood why Mick and Mick have always denied the important contribution of Brain in theirs band in those times called :groups.. without Brian no Stones at all.
Is very very hard for me find the magazine here in Italy.. but I will look for it, in somehow.

So Thanks Gazza for this info I've care enough. Smiley

I loved it, so great to see this & this comes from Tony Basil who was a dancer & went on to great success with a lot of well 'known names including Bowie's Diamond Dogs tour where she choreographer the theatrical dancing.

Too true, Voo.  In fact, one of the recently posted lists (Top 50 Stones songs, I believe) asserts that Mick and Keith founded the group with Dick Taylor, then "recruited" Brian and Stu!
