I've been actually thinking the same thing. The Stones camp keeps saying that this is going to be an exciting year.  I don't think the bootlegs, a book and the documentry (all of which I've been pumped up for by the way) could be the only things in store for MAJOR excitment. To me that means new album and/or a tour.

I think the Stones should play a surprise gig at the Marquee on the actual 50th anniversary date of the first gig.  How cool would that be?  Regardless, they definitely have something big up their sleeve.  If the tour is bumped to 2013 I think it's more due to financial reasons then due to Keith's health or anything else.  I think they are banking on the fact that in 2013 the economy will be better then it currently is.  If Wyman comes on tour (& maybe even Mick Taylor?!?) on what will almost certainly be the last tour of that kind you can bet they will be looking to cash in big time.  I think the delay in the tour has more to do with the economy then anything.  The question is, when it's announced, how should they do it?!?   Perverted Mick

No blimps...no flat beds...no trains...just a nice CLASSY one like at Juliards (May 2005)...maybe on the 50th floor of The Empire State Building...
or at the Rockefeller Ice Rink or a quick one-off show at Radio city...both of which are on 50th street

The thing is, the actual Anniversary DATE is non-existant due to the fact that they are moving the Anniversary Year to 2013 to signify the year that Charlie joined, essentially saying the Rolling Stones did not officiate until Charlie joined. So what date was that, exactly? Gazzapedia??

His first gig was 17.1.63

They're not 'moving the date' at all - its a lot of revisionist bullshit from Keith to shut up a journalist and a few rabid fans and to mask over the fact that for some reason they wont allude to publicly they're not up to playing this summer.

Considering theyve been talking up 2012 as their 50th anniversary for about two years now and released a greatest hits album in 2002 called '40 Licks' to commemorate their 40th anniversary as well as starting a tour in 2002 to commemorate it, its absolute crap to suggest that they dont consider themselves to have existed as a band until Charlie joined them.  They even had their first recording session in October 1962!

Not the first time Keith's tried to re-write history in the last couple of years and I doubt it'll be the last. They played about 40 shows in 1962 as 'The Rollin' Stones', they'd also had a Marquee residency under that name on that night of the week with different drummers sitting in before Charlie started playing with them and no amount of nonsense from Keith can change that.

Again I honestly believe the real reason the tour has been pushed off is the Stones believe the economy will be better next year then this year and will therefore allow them to cash in more then in 2012.

The only way they could "spin" them not being physically up to playing this year would be to calculate Licks as a 2002-2003 extravaganza (..which it was... in all fairness) and then say... well if your truly counting...50 years would really be more 2013 so ... . However I do not think they are going to tout next year as an anniversary thing. The releases and celebrations for all that is going on this year.  Next year will be live shows / some type of tour and new album. I'm not convinced they are going to try and call it a 50th anniversary thing next year. The greatest hits package...documentary.... book..... and bootleg releases for their 50th anniversary celebration is happening this year. I think next year could very well be a new thing on it's own.  Whether you want to think it's their 50 by the time next year rolls around or not will be up to you but I honestly think next year will be a year with an album and tour or some sort of live shows and not a continued 50 th celebration. How can you release a book and movie one year in celebration of your 50th anniversary and then tour next year saying it's your 50th anniversary that year...? Next year very well may be a new thing all on it's own. That would make more sense and seems to be what is to take place.

Ian makes a good point, the Book & possible Imax movie that will be released this year is for the 50th Anniversary and if we get a tour next year it will not be an Anniversary tour.

Great news that you are going to see Charlie!  I'm going Friday night, but when are you getting into the city on Saturday? I can pop over for a pre-show drink and say hello if you have time. Who knows maybe there will be an extra ticket floating around for Saurday night.

The Rolling Stones’ Charlie Watts to Perform at NYC Concert Event in Late June

http://abcnewsradioonline.com/storage/music-news-images/M_ABCDofBoogieWoogie630_...
13 June 2012

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts will play a special show on June 28 in New York City as part of Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing series.  The event will serve as the U.S. debut of Watts’ jazz-blues side project, The ABC&D of Boogie Woogie.  The group — which also features pianists Axel Zwingenberger and Ben Waters, and bassist Dave Green — is scheduled to play two hour-long sets, at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET.  Tickets are on sale now for $17 at LincolnCenter.org.

Prior to the concert, a dance instructor will treat attendees to lesson on how to do the Lindy Hop.  The show takes place two days after the band’s first album, Live in Paris, will be released.

As previously reported, Watts and The ABC&D of Boogie Woogie will play a four night stand at New York City’s famed Iridium jazz club that will run from June 29 through July 2.  The group will play two shows each night, at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Spliced it into the existing thread which had fallen down to page three.

(There's a separate thread on the live album too - http://rocksoff.org/messageboard/YaBB.pl?num=1335810087)

Thanks for posting the article though - it's a good way to revive the thread in case some of you are thinking of going to these shows and/or meeting up.

Plus, I'd forgotten about the live record!

It was interesting to see Charlie play Boogie-Woogie style and he clearly enjoys it. I've never seen Charlie smile so much in my life! Not very often does he smile playing with The Stones, maybe that work is harder on him. Charlie was smiling almost the entire time at The Iridium, and was very engaged with the other musicians, much more so than with The Stones. I really do understand now that this is Charlie's musical preference, and he's damn good at it too! As far as the show went, I was a bit disappointed that Charlie was not on stage for the first 2 songs, then when he did come out the show wasnt very long. The talent of the other musicians was superb, maybe that was the point, to showcase them and promote the new CD. Before or after the show, Charlie did not come out and greet the guests, nor did he sign anything or stand around so we can snap a pic with him. I'm glad I went to see Charlie, but I would of liked a little more from him. I guess he doesnt feel he owes us anything extra, and he doesnt really. I left there feeling slightly unhappy, I wanted more of Charlie's personality and he didnt give it, he didnt interact much with the crowd.

Dont really get why people go to one of Charlies's side projects with Stones-like expectancies or expecting him to suddenly morph into some kind of Jagger-esque charismatic frontman, but maybe thats just me.

Anyway, for the benefit of those of you in the US, here's last night's Jimmy Fallon show featuring the ABCD of Boogie Woogie

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrvflk_late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-fri-jun-29-...

Cant be viewed outside the US unfortunately, so if anyone has a link that the rest of us mere mortals can watch, please post it

Well Bitch can speak for herself Gazza. But I don't think anybody was expecting Charlie to come out and play Jumping Jack Flash, or try and work the crowd into a sing along and I wasn't there. But,still a "Hi,how you doing". A few words,a thank you to the audience. Something would be nice. Always leaves me a little cold when I see an act and they don't interact with the crowd at all. No matter how good they are.

True enough and a good point  - but he's a shy and reserved enough guy at the best of times and pretty much the antithesis of what we expect from a media personality. That's what I meant.

I don't think he's going to suddenly transform into Mr Showbiz just because he's in another band. He's never done it before with any of his other side projects. I don't think these projects lend themselves to that sort of interaction and they're not really going to make exceptions to accommodate those of us who are more used to more mainstream entertainment.

Thanks Gazza and Voodoo. It was great to see Charlie up close and he looks very good physically and mentally sharp. I was hoping for an autograph and some pics, so I was disappointed about that, but not with the show.  It was exactly what I was expecting, musically, actually it was a little better than I was expecting due to the high talent level of the band members. The female singer is Lila Ammons, grandaughter of jazz pioneer Albert Ammons, she was excellent. Axel Zwingenberger (piano), Ben Waters (piano) and Dave Green (bass), so the A, B C & D stands for the initials of the first names of the band members. Cool, huh? A for Axel, B for Ben, C for Charlie and D for Dave! ...

I certainly didn't or you would have heard me screaming in Belfast.
From a report I just read, well here, let me copy and paste.

From Shidoobee's west 8:

"I was lucky enough to be sitting at the same table as Keith. It was exciting to see him ! People cheered when he came and sat down and when he left as well. That was it. No one came over to him and asked for an autograph or anything. It was interesting to watch Keith watch Charlie and the band. I never saw Keith from that view point. A fan like myself. He was really enjoying the show. The best Keith moment of the night was at the end when Charlie was leaving the stage Keith gives him a big hug and Big smiles between the two of them. It was a great moment between 2 friends still there for each other after 50 years. Keith smile was saying "You done good old friend" Aside from that Wow what a great show. They were just so on. I am so glad I had the chance to see this show"

Wow! Cool picture!  Here's what the NY Times said about Monday:

Just Waiting on a FriendBy JAMES C. MCKINLEY JR.

Keith Richards showed up at the Iridium on Monday night to see Charlie Watts, his band mate in the Rolling Stones, play a set of jump blues and boogie woogie songs. There were rumors before the 8 p.m. set that Mr. Richards, the famed guitarist for the Stones, would sit in with Mr. Watts and his band, but it became clear halfway through the set that Mr. Richards was there only to provide moral support. He gave Mr. Watts a big hug as he came off stage.

Mr. Watts and his band, the ABC & D of Boogie Woogie, had just finished a four-night stand at the Iridium, a relatively small jazz room on Broadway, after playing one night at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing series. The band is led by the German pianist Alex Zwingenberger, but has a secondary pianist and vocalist, Ben Waters, a stalwart Englishman who literally lifted the piano with his legs when he got swinging to the beat. They were joined by the bassist Dave Green, who is a longtime friend of Mr. Watts, and the vocalist Lila Ammons, the granddaughter of the famed boogie-woogie player Albert Ammons.

It was an oldies set. Indeed it was a set of songs that would have been considered oldies back in the 1960s when Mr. Watts and Mr. Richards were young. The songs were all hot 12-bar blues tunes with a wicked walking bassline, drawing from R&B, jump blues, swing and early rock’n’roll. Mr. Watts and the band blazed through tunes like Ray Charles’s hit “What’d I Say,” Charles Calhoun’s “Shake, Rattle and Roll” and W.C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues.”

They rocked several blistering, obscure boogie-woogie tunes, and slowed down only once in a while for some lazy blues, often with a comic twist, like Mr. Waters’s rendition of “Oreo Cookie Blues,” which is about a man fighting his addiction to sugary snacks.

Mr. Watts, silver-haired, rail thin and fit at 71, seemed content and Zen-like behind the drums at center stage, where he used brushes, mallets and sticks to beat out the shuffle rhythms and swinging triplet-based figures of the musical era that preceded his own. Though he is most famous for his work with the Stones, Mr. Watts has always done jazz side projects, going back to the 1970s when he joined the back-to-basics boogie-woogie group Rocket 88. He started performing concerts with the ABC&D of Boogie Woogie three years ago, and in 2010 he recorded the album “The Magic of Boogie Woogie” as a trio with Mr. Zwingenberger and Mr. Green

Charlie only shook 3 hands at the 8 PM Sunday show. Mine, Hollies and Lynns. It was so awesome to be front dead center for the man. Just the facial expressions. he kept looking toward Sherlie and smiling. The show was awesome. i really don't care if I see the Stones again.

A footnote to Charlie's triumphant visit to New York -

July 6, 2012 at 1:00 am

Society confidential: Rolling Stone Watts boogies with Detroit's Bob Seeley

By Susan Whitall and Chuck Bennett

...

One of Detroit's musical gems was on display last Friday at New York's Iridium nightclub, as Rolling Stones drummer and noted jazz buff Charlie Watts played with his A, B, C & D of Boogie Woogie band for the first time in the United States. Filling in for Watts' regular pianist, Ben Waters , was Bob Seeley , the genius boogie-woogie pianist whose rhythmic style is heavily influenced by the late boogie-woogie pioneer Meade Lux Lewis (Seeley met Lewis when he played Detroit in the 1940s). For years, Seeley played at Charley's Crab, with many locals unaware of his international reputation. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 75-minute set at the Iridium began with "St. Louis Blues," on which Seeley demonstrated his "mastery of stride technique, his rhythm-producing left hand gradually accelerating to dizzying speed." Watts, Seeley and band also played Meade Lux Lewis' "Yancey Special" and "Honky Tonk Train Blues." "Hopefully, there's no train wreck," Seeley told the Reporter before the gig. No chance. Fans were delirious and Watts was smiling throughout, a contrast to his usual deadpan look with the Stones.

Rolling Stones’ Charlie Watts shines a light on 50th anniversary while playing with jazz band

...

NEW YORK — Even though he’s played in the same rock ‘n’ roll band for nearly 50 years, Charlie Watts still prefers playing jazz.

The Rolling Stones drummer learned how to play it by imitating his favorite jazz players as a teenager.

So during his breaks with the Stones, Watts has played jazz, not rock, and that legacy continues with his latest venture, The A, B, C, and D of Boogie Woogie. The quartet recently released “Live in Paris” from one of their shows during a recent 10-show run at the club Duc des Lombards.

Watts recently spoke to The Associated Press about the project, as well as what’s being planned for the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary next year.

AP: Tell me about the comfort level of this band.

Watts: I’ve known Dave (Green) for 65 years. We’ve lived next door to each other. He’s always in bands that I’ve been in besides the Rolling Stones. Axel (Zwingenberger) I’ve known since ‘80-something. And Ben (Waters) I’ve known for three years, but I’ve known of him from many years before that because he’s a progeny — his aunt and uncle were friends of a guy called Ian Stewart who used to play piano with us. And I used to play in one of Stew’s bands in this county called Dorcet. That’s how I know his aunt and uncle. And I know of Ben because he loved Stew and tried to emulate his playing.

AP: Is there a big difference in playing drums in a jazz band from playing in a rock band?

Watts: I don’t play power drums; they just turn the knobs up now. Yes, it’s much more physical to play rock ‘n’ roll, especially with the volume that you play at — that they play at, they being guitar players as opposed to playing this with a tenor saxophone player or trumpet player. The volume is all the same, particularly with the A, B, C, and D of Boogie Woogie, obviously two are piano players. To play well with a piano player, you have to be able to play — there’s a lot of control needed. And you’re playing almost acoustically.

AP: So what’s next for you?

Watts: I think we’re going to be doing a lot of 50th anniversary stuff, we, the Rolling Stones.

AP: Like a tour or an album?

Watts: No, just other things. Fifty years of things. A documentary, well, they haven’t approved it yet. I haven’t seen it, but we worked on that earlier this year. Books and things like that. There will be other things that the 50 years mean. And touring, we haven’t gotten that far. We’re still talking about the color of the back page of the book, so we’ll see what happens.

AP: Fifty years? Marriages don’t often last that long.

Watts: Actually mine lasted 49 years. ... When I joined the Rolling Stones ... I thought it would last a few months, because that’s what bands last. I’d been in a lot of bands up until then that last two or three months. Then it became three years. I thought that’s it, it won’t. ... We’re very fortunate. One of the ways that it lasted so long because we have a huge fan base, and I don’t mean that in a conceited way, but it is that. ... With the Rolling Stones it’s people saying, “It’s the fans,” people saying, “Yes, you should.” And indeed it’s us saying, “We’ll play New Haven,” and if people come, you know, that keeps it going on and on.
