Why is it so hard to accept the fact that Keith is basically retired? Keith has said many times: he has nothing to prove. He wrote a book to clear his mental attic while he's still compos mentis. He is not a working musician right now, and doesn't even really pretend to be. He's living the life of an aging country gentleman, does not bother anyone, does not (often) seek attention. He's like George Harrison, in a way.

That said, I think he's interested in at least one more go-around.

But let's face it: It's not 1968 anymore. Hell, it's not even 1998 anymore!

Why?

There's no comparison in terms of scale. And the Stones never announce tours this far in advance.

Maybe the Beach Boys are touring earlier in the year than the Stones are - have they even announced any dates yet?

Can't see why people are getting frantic. They probably wont play any shows for about six months at least.

People are probably getting frantic, becasue any act with any remote bit of popularity left seems to be touring this year. Not everybody wants to wait around for the Stones to make a decsion.

Tour opener is at Jazz Fest in New Orleans, Friday, April 27, billed as "The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Reunion."

Nor should they.

This year is only 6 weeks old. Most of those acts that have confirmed tours have done so because theyre touring in the first part of the year. The Stones haven't done so because they won't be touring until later in the year. Are Springsteen fans in the US hoping for shows that'll take place from August/September onwards worrying that they wont happen because he hasnt announced anything yet for after the Euro tour ends in July ?

What did people do in other years when the Stones didnt announce world tours until July (1981, 1989), May (1994, 2002 and 2005) and August (1997)?  All of those tours started in August-September.

Well Gazza I think the difference this time, as opposed to other years is that in those other years you mentioned we at least had word on venues being booked by now or something going on. As of right now... not a damn thing on any place. Not a damn thing about anything. As well, in those other years we were getting word on what they were up to at the time and we knew they were moving in some definitive direction by now. We may of heard of a merchandising company signing on for the event or something in the past by now ..you know...SOMETHING to let us know it was certainly going down... but now this time... zippola.. ..

This time we are quite in the dark, in fact totally clueless about what they are going to release, what type of tour it is going to be... IF they are to tour... when in general the tour will start etc. etc.

In those other years we sort of knew "generally" what was to occur and what they were doing by this point. We knew they were working on albums at the time or we would get word trickled down here and there that venues were being booked etc. etc. ...stuff like that. This time... nothing.

.. here it is February... and we do not even know even if they are going to tour yet (although most agree something is to occur and most agree they will perform).

No we didnt. When did we ever hear anything this early before about venues being booked? Simply untrue, unless you're talking about brokers chancing their arm (only yesterday the Stones facebook/twitter page issued a statement warning fans not to register for a ticket broker site in Europe which listed  about ten European stadium dates which they claimed had been 'announced' for September 2012). There's always a few rumours by this stage with varying degrees of credibility. Maybe it also just depends where you look or who you talk to if you want rumours. I've heard and read several. There's no point posting them for the sake of posting them as a lot of them contradict each other and it renders it a pointless exercise. One I was told yesterday - from someone who I dont know well but who wouldnt be someone who would indulge in idle speculation - was a tour announcement in April and a US tour starting September with European dates in 2013. That may have some validity. Then again, maybe it won't. Who knows.

The only thing different so far is that we've heard nothing about them doing any recording. Which isnt a big deal as they dont need to do any in order to tour and almost certainly wont be making a new record anyway. If there had been a story that they'd been recording together, there would have been none of this angst.

I need something good to snap me out of my winter blues.  What would bring me out of it it some juicy news about them playing together, a tour...something.  Keith showing up at a tribute gig isn't enough.  We've usually been good at figuring out things before they happen, but now it's silent about the future. The band members are doing their thing, or not doing their thing.

And why hasn't a single picture or a bit of info surfaced about that December get together? Not one thing has come out.

All I want is to see them on stage. Give me a show. I need a Stones fix in a bad, bad way.

Believe me. It isn't. Things are moving.  We'll know when the i's are dotted and the 't's are crossed. You will be seeing the Stones in the latter part of 2012. Things are always quiet before an announcement - thats the entire point of having one.

Because it was a secret get together in a secret location. If I hadnt posted the info here (after being told not to do so for several weeks), you wouldnt have known it had even happened.  It wasnt meant to be something for public consumption. How often do you see pictures posted of a rehearsal session or a jam session unless its something that was filmed for a DVD? Not everything has to be done in the public gaze. There have been numerous sessions or get togethers down the years that havent been subject to public scrutiny. They jammed. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Only because there's been no talk about any recording - meaning that some people get more anxious as they assume nothing's going to happen at all.

Otherwise, its the same as far as I can tell.  Concert itineraries don't just materialise out of thin air.

The last 5+ years have been so disappointing in terms of creativity that I don't really care either way at this point, I'm not even sure it's a good idea to launch a tour, it's going to be an embarrassment for Keith I'm afraid.

I know they jammed. Still, I must go with my original assumption. Making sure all The Stones... INCLUDING Bill Wyman were in London, and having Mick fly in if only for a day to play at some rented out rehearsal studio just had to have some purpose or direction. Can't see them doing this for nothing or for the simple fact at wanting to jam a bit. Possibly it was an ice-breaker... possibly it was a start into something more.. but I still can't see it as a casual get together to simply play some music.  Bill hasn't been interested in that in 20 years and The Stones don't just get together and "jam" for no reason in this day and age. In the 60's and 70's sure. Not now.

My only point is that so far... no word on any of that kina stuff has leaked to any of us (besides the juicy Jam session info you gave us in which we are grateful... now give us some more juice... hehe)-

Did you hear about the Columbus date seven months before it happened, though?

Probably not.  You may have heard gossip about a venue (not uncommon as its usually not that hard to guess what venues would be used on a stadium tour - its a bit like me saying "I heard they'll play Wembley Stadium in 2013") but I doubt you knew the date very far in advance. For every show we hear about that works out, there's probably more rumoured shows that never take place. Everyone seems to forget about those!

Columbus was also at the start of the tour in late September or early October - just six or seven weeks after the tour was confirmed on 18th August. I'd imagine that venue had been reserved by the spring or early summer.

As for '94. It was no secret they were working on an album. It was a big story where I live in July 1993 for the simple reason that they were recording in Dublin. On Mick's 50th birthday, it was a front page story that he had spent it recording in Ireland. So, there was NO surprise that the Stones would tour in 1994. As I've said, you're hearing less now for the simple reason that the band arent working on a new record.  In 2004, we knew as early as summer 2004 that they were working on songs for a new record, so there was no doubt that they were going to tour in 2005.

I've heard more detail in the last two days about a 2012 Stones tour than I've heard in the last two years combined. Some of it highly implausible (The 'leaked' European dates for September 2012 that I mentioned earlier) but some regarding US shows around the same time which have a lot more validity. Its a bizarre state of desperation when people arent just complaining that they havent heard enough confirmed info by a certain date but that they havent heard enough rumours.

Did you ever think that maybe the Stones organisation are just better now at keeping things under wraps? People DO get into trouble for leaking info when they're not supposed to. A lot of stuff at the minute comes with the 'dont post this' disclaimer.

There are usually quite valid reasons for not posting dates too early - and no one in their right mind should be booking flights based on a rumoured concert date.

We'll know when we need to know.
