One thing I took out of all that, was how well the streaming worked. Now that's something that should be considered for the next Stones tour. Of course it wouldn't be free, but whatever they charge would be cheaper than a concert ticket. I know some bands already do it. How cool would that be to just sit in front of your computer and watch a live Stones concert?

Now you are talking.  At least for one show.
As long as it adds to the gross.

I remember The Who doing that a few years ago for a while (2004 or so) - a few shows were free (and complete) at first, and then they brought in a subscription version..it wasnt too expensive either, although I dont think they streamed too many full shows in the end..mostly a few minutes or so.

I reckon there may be more PPV shows (or maybe webcasts) than before on the next tour, because I really dont think it'll be a particularly long tour and I doubt there'll be too many cities involved, mostly 'A' markets. Some with extended runs.

Yeah, but those were different times, bit like judging the stones purely on Dirty Work.  Doo'h

Instead of She's The Boss, we'd get We Rule!   Cool

Jeff was on most of "Primitive Cool" too but it wasn't a lot better, there are some nice guitar parts though. Then they fell out during rehearsals because Mick wanted to pay him a pittance apparently. Now an album of blues stuff like Commit a Crime with Mick and Jeff, wow, that would be something, won't happen though.

It's nice to see Jeff back in the spotlight again, I remember seeing him at the Warfield in early 2001 and while the concert was great (Jennifer Batten was on stage with him, that was her at the WH too, right?) a lot of the comments said he was a "nostalgia" act. I doubt he's really selling more these days, and his latest album is a dud, but he sure gets a lore more respect, which is only fair given how unique a guitar player he is.

@The Wick - yep, it's too bad that Mick's talent is so rarely on display...Macca has certainly found a better balance in that respect.

Just saying that there are a sizeable amount of Stones cheerleaders who appear to live in some kind of timewarp or fantasy land when it comes to ignoring the fact that these guys are ageing and are mortals.

Your post didnt fall into that category at all.

He had tour hair at that fashion event with L'Wren last week for sure, and I think his coiffure at the Whitehouse probably leans in that direction too.

Fresh from White House show, Mick Jagger says: ‘Every gig is a gig’

By Chris Richards, Published: February 23

We don’t need Maroon 5’s ubiquitous pop hit “Moves Like Jagger” to remind us that the physicality of rock-and-roll still lives in Mick Jagger’s muscle tissue.

On Tuesday, the 68-year-old Rolling Stones frontman threw limb and larynx into a concert at the White House honoring the American blues, strutting, stomping, huffing and howling beneath the East Room chandeliers.

Eyebrows and heart rates were raised — but imagine if he had just stood politely behind the microphone. Would it have been a Mick Jagger performance?

“Uh, no,” said Jagger, phoning from his New York hotel room on Thursday. “I don’t think I can do that.”

Performing alongside B.B. King, Buddy Guy, fellow British invader Jeff Beck and others on Tuesday, Jagger helped trigger the show’s surprise finale by passing his microphone to President Obama so that he could croon a few lines of “Sweet Home Chicago.”

Guitarist Keith Richards wasn’t in tow, but with the Rolling Stones celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, we might see the duo on stage in the near future. “Well, we’re talking about it,” Jagger said of a possible upcoming Stones tour. Until then, don’t miss Jagger’s moves when “In Performance at the White House” airs Monday on WETA at 9 p.m.

--

Are you the first person to wear bright red cross-trainers to a formal White House function?

Probably . . . I think performers can sort of wear what they want. And they did! Did you like B.B.’s flowery jacket? That was nice.

Nearly every artist who’s performed for this administration has said they were nervous before going on stage. But you didn’t seem nervous at all.

I don’t want to sound blasé . . . but every gig is a gig, right? If you’re rehearsed, you don’t get nervous. That’s my thing. I only get nervous when I don’t know what I’m doing.

But how do you walk into a setting as formal as the East Room and light the place up?

It didn’t feel formal when you had those musicians up on stage, y’know what I mean? When you first walk in you go, “Oooh, yeah. This is a bit odd.” But it’s a stage. And I think all of the performers felt the same way… It didn’t feel stiff. Did it to you?

No, but some White House performances in the past . . .

I spoke to one of the organizing people and they said they have felt a bit stuffy in the past. And this didn’t.

Did you ever think you’d be handing a microphone to the president of the United States?

No, that wasn’t on the list of things I expected to do. It was just a moment. And I was the only one with a spare mike!

Did the president and first lady have any thoughts for you after the show?

I saw them before. I saw him at the rehearsal and the first lady was very kind to wear L’Wren Scott, [the fashion line of Jagger’s girlfriend, L’Wren Scott], so that was a very nice added extra.

Between songs, you took special care to speak about the importance of the American blues artists who influenced you. How come?

Well, I thought it was, y’know, a show for the blues. So I thought I would just put in my two cents — my memories from my point of view. So that was a sort of personal reminiscence . . . And with B.B. being there, I was remembering all these people and how great they’d been to us. So I thought it was a good place to say it.

Many have credited the Rolling Stones with introducing America to its own music while others have said rock-and-roll has unfairly profited from the blues. Where do you sit with all that in 2012?

It’s a whole sort of can of worms, isn’t it really? . . . When we we first came to the United States, the blues had been largely forgotten — not forgotten — but it was not the music of contemporary black America, right? It was, perhaps, ignored to some extent. The good part of it is we talked about it a lot. And people listened.

You sounded good up there alongside Jeff Beck, but did Keith not get an invite?

I don’t know anything about the invites or who was playing with who. I was just asked to do the gig and I accepted. I didn’t even really know who was coming. There were a lot of people who were asked. I was expecting to be playing with James Cotton, which I was really looking forward to, but he wasn’t [available]. And we didn’t really know that B.B. was going to come — that was a bit last minute. But I think there were a lot of very interesting people [on the bill].

I saw you tweeting up a storm during the rehearsals and after the show. You were particularly excited about this gig, huh?

It was great because there was Buddy [Guy] and B.B. and I always love seeing them play. And being given a chance to be on stage with them and being able to interact with them is always a thrill. Some other players, like Gary Clark [Jr.] . . . and Keb Mo, I had never seen live before, to be honest. I thought they were really good.

How did that thrill compare to playing for the first couple?

I want to energize the room. If they’re energized, fantastic. I loved it. They seemed to be very enthusiastic and it was a really great show. I hope they enjoyed it and I’m very honored to have played the White House.

I was surprised everyone made it through the evening without making a “Moves Like Jagger” joke.

I know! I was gonna do it but then I did my blues appreciation speech instead.

What do you think of that song?

I hear it all the time. It’s a very long-lived song, isn’t it? That and Adele. Still playing. I get into the car, and there it is, still. And then I go to the club and there it is . . .

Aside from the younger artists you got to meet over the weekend in D.C., who else is making music that excites you right now?

I like the Black Keys’ last album . . . I forgot the title of it. A Spanish name.

“El Camino.”

“El Camino.” I like that album. It was a good, kind of bluesy, yet somehow... “pop” is the wrong word. It’s a good combination of sounds and songs. I really enjoy that album.

Do you still hear the Stones’ legacy in today’s music?

Yeah! I think there’s some of the Stones’ legacy in that album. Maybe that’s why I like it.

I hope the Stones do streaming, if it can be done to everyone in the Stones camp's Satisfaction! I am so happy they streamed the WHite House gig, the picture was really clear (HD?) and the sound was excellent. It was so exciting to see MICK anf Jeff Beck together agian too. Jeff looks awesome, his arms and upper body are well toned, watching him turned me on big time! Jeff Beck ROCKS!

Mick Jagger calls Obama's blues singing "courageous"

(CBS/AP) Mick Jagger gave President Barack Obama's singing attempt a big thumbs up. The rocker called Mr. Obama's singing of the blues this week "courageous."

Jagger said the president did pretty well when he joined a White House blues concert earlier in the week. During the performance, Mr. Obama sang a few lines of the blues anthem "Sweet Home Chicago" at the urging of B.B. King and Buddy Guy.

The Rolling Stones frontman also told the Associated Press he was pleased to see that Michelle Obama was wearing a dress for the event that was designed by L'Wren Scott, his longtime girlfriend.

Jagger also answered the question that's been on the minds of many Rolling Stones fans: Will the Stones get together this year for a 50th anniversary tour? Jagger says he looks forward to doing something, but "nothing is yet booked."

Jagger and other blues greats played the East Room as part of an "In Performance at the White House" concert that will air on PBS on Monday.

From the White House to PBS, Mick Jagger still has the moves
By Cindy Clark, USA TODAY

Mick Jagger brought his signature moves to the East Room of the White House on Tuesday for a special concert celebrating blues music and in recognition of Black History Month. Performing alongside artists including B.B. King, Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck, Jagger even got President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama dancing. The 68-year-old Rolling Stones frontman called USA TODAY's Cindy Clark to chat about the concert, In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues, which airs Monday on PBS stations nationwide (times may vary).

How was performing at the White House? Were you nervous?

I wasn't really nervous. I don't know why I wasn't nervous. I don't really get nervous. The only thing that makes me nervous is live television, and I didn't even know it was going to be live streamed! Because live television is live television and you get slightly worried. But the actual gig, when you've done the rehearsal on the stage the day before and you've gone through everything and everything seems to be fine, you don't really get nervous. I don't anyway. But everyone seemed to be very relaxed.
I got that feeling, the performers weren't really that nervous. It's a difficult strange room because you're not in a club, and the president's there, but when it comes down to it, in the end when you're up there and you're playing, once you start the first few bars, you're doing what you do. That's how I think of it.

What did you think of Obama's spontaneous singing at the end of the evening? (the president was handed the microphone by Guy and sang a couple of lines from Sweet Home Chicago)

It was fun, I'm glad he did that. It was really sporty. Buddy Guy kind of fixed him with a beady eye. He (Obama) was just walking off and I couldn't believe how Buddy is — he's very like that, when he wants something, he focuses in on it. Did you hear what he said? Something like, 'I heard you singing Al Green's songs … you're not going to get away with this.' He (Obama) was so reluctant, but that reluctance — you've got to do it.

I heard you got a tour of the White House … what was that like?

It was great, we went to the East Wing, the public part, and then we went and had a great tour of the West Wing. It was really interesting, and I've been once before but it was great to do it with my family. We saw all of these different rooms that you normally wouldn't get to see and we talked to all sorts of people who work there. It was really a great afternoon.

Which honor was greater: performing for Obama or being knighted by the Prince of Wales?
They were both great honors!

The Stones started in the blues, and you're obviously a huge fan. What do you think of the state of the blues now?

I don't really know what the state of blues is right now, to be honest. There are all different kinds of blues and people playing it. It's always good to get younger people, some of the very old people will give up playing, stop playing, but you've got young people coming through in every area and different kinds of styles. Blues never — not since the '50s —sold records. But it's popular live and has its audience.

Do you think current rock bands are carrying the torch as well as rock bands in the '60s did?

Well, they have to. Who else is going to do it? There's a lot of current rock bands … I felt like on the Grammys that the Foo Fighters did the best song of the night. Their first number. I thought that was really exciting and real, whatever that means. It felt kind of vibe-y and real and energetic. And they may not be teenagers, but they certainly worked it. And I thought that was a good moment.

Any special plans for the Stones' 50th anniversary this year?

We have lots of special things planned, but I'm not telling you what they are!

Not even one thing?

Well, I don't know what's been announced and what hasn't been announced, but everyone asks me about the shows. We haven't announced any shows yet, but I do hope that something happens, even though nothing's booked. There will be lots of lovely things.

Did you ever think back in the early '60s you'd still be performing today?

Of course I did! The thing was, way back in the '60s we used to go and see performers that were the same age I am now. So I suppose in the back of my mind I hadn't ruled that out. Now we're still doing great things. You've got to have a high energy level. You can't have a low energy level in this kind of music. That's the thing, you've got to keep going. Obviously, you're not going to be the same energy level as when you were 20, but you've still got to put it out there, and that's what I always try and do.

When are you guys going to get back in the studio and record another album?

I've written a lot of songs, but I don't have any concrete plans.

Who are you listening to these days?

My album that I listen to is the Black Keys' El Camino, which I like very much.

I asked our readers if there was anything they'd like me to ask you, and one question came up repeatedly. I'm sure you know what that question is …

Yeah, I do.

Well then, what's your take on Maroon 5's Moves Like Jagger? It's still going strong on the radio.

I know! It's been on there so long so someone must like it. It's very catchy. I could say I wish I had written it, but wouldn't that be weird? It's fun, very young children like it, which is always cool and funny. But what am I going to say? I'm not going to be mean about it, am I?
I like Maroon 5, we toured with them and everything. But that's not really like a Maroon 5 song, that's the other funny thing. It's not really their kind of thing, so they're probably as surprised by the success of it as I am. It's very catchy pop, isn't it? It's funny. Only thing is, it puts a bit of pressure on me when I go out dancing!

What was Fashion Week like? (Jagger's longtime girlfriend is designer L'Wren Scott)

It was great! And one thing I've got to say is it was so great to see the first lady wearing L'Wren Scott clothes when we were at the White House the other day. So that was really good. And I didn't see much of Fashion Week because I only came up for the last day. I'm not really that much of a Fashion Week groupie, but I went to L'Wren's show and that was great.

What are your plans for Oscars on Sunday? Are you rooting for anyone in particular to win?

I'm not going this year, but I'll be watching on TV. I'm not rooting — I'm not a great Oscar rooter, but I love the fashions.

uh-oh.  all this talk doesnt bode well for less hystrionics for coming tour.  Funny thing is,  I dont think there was all that much running around on stage in their 20's, right?  When did the over- the- top spectacle begin, '81?  Doesnt sound like Mick is prepared to give it up either...  Mick and Madonna always tryin to out-do each other--bet their sexual trysts sucked.

Done by telephone. Presumably around the same time as the one I posted above for CBS which was done by telephone from his New York hotel room. Yesterday.

So, what have we got so far....

1) Mick performed in DC on Tuesday and paid tribute to Hubert Sumlin.
2) Mick is now staying in a hotel in New York
3) Keith is performing at a Hubert Sumlin tribute in New York this evening.

Dare we hope for a sequel to this great moment at another benefit concert in the same city in October 2001....
