What do you guys think of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain and all of that Grunge stuff from the late 80s-mid 90s?

In Utero is a good album.

Soundgarden were terrific live - Badmotorfinger is a great album.

Pearl Jam have been consistently boring, but are certainly resilient.

I own In Utero, Nevermind and Unplugged.  I'm particularly fond of Unplugged; some of the chord progressions and vocals remind me of John Lennon.  And, Kilroy, it's great to be considered one of "the kids" at age 57!
Have you no fucking shame?

Nirvana and, especially, Pearl Jam rock!  The latter have consistently put on some of the best concerts this thousand-plus show veteran has ever seen...

No Problem and you are welcome my fellow 50 + friend, There is stuff here and there I really Like by them, don't get me wrong. it's, IMO,  for the younger kids.
Maybe I should listen more intently if a fellow Rocks Off patron is reminded of John Lennon. I will! Thanks for your Opinion, and i to am considered from time to time "one Of the Kids"
I love the video of them in the Gym, the tune Smell like Teen Spirit, I think................

Nirvana - loved them. Except for the suicide part. Nevermind was the Never Mind The Bollocks of the 90s. Maybe that's why they called it that. Loved all their videos, especially the one where they alternate between being a cute pop band and drunken rampaging transvestites. Their live TV performances always bordered on anarchy. Remember when Krist Novaselic hit himself in the head with his bass? Their version of In The Pines by Leadbelly is too fucking cool. They knocked Thriller off the top of the charts.

Pearl Jam - never understood the fuss until I saw Eddy Vedder sing "Masters of War" at the Bob Dylan tribute at MSG in '92. When he came out, I was really looking down my nose - the line-up of that show was SO amazing, and I wondered why the hell this KID was there. (It turns out he had offered to roadie just to be with "ten of the twelve apostles" as he put it and was invited to perform by his elders.) As soon as he opened his mouth, everyone was transfixed. You could hear a pin drop.  All the hair on my neck stood up. He sounded like he had written the song, or that he was writing it on the spot, and he meant every word. And I hope that you die. And your death will come soon. I will follow your casket. In the pale afternoon.

But still, Pearl Jam songs always lose me. They don't have any hooks. I love to hear them playing cover songs. I even like their version of The Last Kiss, because it seems to be completely un-ironic.

I've never been to one, but I know damn well that their shows are probably religious experiences, judging from that one song I heard Eddy sing. He's the real deal.

Never cared for any of the other grunge bands much, Alice in Chains or what have you. It all sounded pretty much like metal to me. But I think Nirvana was a genuinely great band.

I really liked grunge. I guess it just reminded me of some of the early grungy sounding garage stuff from the 60's...Smiley I like Nirvana--really like Pearl Jam and like Alice in Chains as well. Oh. And I'm 59....and a half.  Wink

Soundgarden probably stands atop 90s bands for me. Nirvana is up there. Always had a soft spot for 3-member bands, too...

I remember seeing Neil Young in the early 90s and had Blues Traveler, Soundgarden AND Pearl Jam as the opening acts. All three were quite good - Soundgarden was the best. I was amazed at how many 'kids' left after Pearl Jam finished! Bet they're kicking themselves, now...

Here is how it is folks :

1. Nirvana - Great guitar sound. Technically were the first to introduce a grunge sound to the masses. Had catchy tunes ... and were the real deal as far as grunge is concerned but were by no means any sort of legendary group and as well they were severely limited.

2. Kurt Kobain - Tormented soul. Took his music seriously. Hard working at his craft. With that said and all due respect, he is sometimes wrongfully categorized as some sort of "legend" simply because of his demise.

3. Gurnge - Better than the 80's hair band sound. Nice variation of rock. Not to take seriously... and not to last in that vain.

4. 90's music in general from pop to grunge - Pretty decent decade for music. Nothing earth shattering, and certainly not in the league of the late sixties and early seventies era but pretty darn good and enjoyable over-all. Light years better than anything going on right now ..which is basically nothing.

Here is how it is folks:

1. With some rare exceptions, Nirvana and most of the other bands from that movement were a bunch of media driven crap that one minute praise Nirvana and the next minute rave about the songwriting skills of Madonna  Smiley

I admire your willingness to look for good stuff. But that's the point I was trying to make... in order to find good stuff now-a-days you have to pretty much dig and seek. In the 90's it was much more plentiful, exposed, and it found it's way to you. Today you may find an artist or two every six months you really dig. From 91-95 there was good stuff put out much more frequently by various artists. Now it requires some work to find..

That's absolutely true. But, I am desperate enough to seek out some good stuff! Smiley I found a college-type radio station around there that is exposing me to artists and groups I've previously been unfamiliar with---and I research from there.

The whole grunge thing gave rock a creative boost and forced mainstream radio station that prefer lame middle of the road crap to play a kind of music that they considered 'not suited for the mainstream' for quite a few years. Nirvana was the flag ship of that scene, with two classic studio albums and a great Unplugged disc. I really like a lot of the other stuff: I used to spin Pearl Jam's Ten more often than Nevermind. Man what a great album. Must be one of the best debuts ever.
