Blue Lena (Tamara) just posted it on facebook a few minutes ago.

Sad news indeed. He had just turned 80.

Very good friends with Keith, who even (quietly) paid his medical bills a few years back when he required surgery.

Condolences to his wife Toni and his family.

This clip is Hubert playing 'Let It Bleed' with the Stones at Madison Square Garden on 16.1.03 (a couple of nights before the HBO concert)

Ah, one of the greats. Hope he's resting where there is no blues.

Damn, damn, damn.  I was hoping this was a mistake.  Apparently not.  Very sad news.  He was a great man and will be missed, but always remembered.  RIP Hubert.

As I remember, Ginda,  Chrissy (Azqb) and Hubert were pretty good friends. Think they lived near each other?

Right on both counts, Gazza.  She spent a lot of time with Hubert and was very fond of him.

I still can't find anything about Hubert's death.  Nothing on his website, etc.  Maybe there is a slim chance the info is wrong.

Blues guitar great Hubert Sumlin dies

SUNDAY, 04 DECEMBER 2011 16:58 WRITTEN BY JIM WHITE

...
Hubert Sumlin, who gained blues fame as a guitarist for the legendary Howlin' Wolf from about 1954 to 1976, and in more recent years as a solid performer on his own, died today. His death closes yet another window into blues history.

Sumlin had just turned 80 last month. He died in a hospital in Wayne, N.J., reportedly of heart failure.

Here's a very nice tribute to Sumlin written by guitarist Bob Margolin, back in 2003: http://www.hubertsumlinblues.com/biography.html
I haven't seen a full obituary yet on Sumlin, but I'm sure there will be some in the next day or so.

I've seen Sumlin a few times in recent years at blues festivals. He always impressed me with his sharp dressing and smiling demeanor, and especially with his still-snappy guitar work. Another real-deal bluesman who will be missed.

Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv63oUwwIwY&feature=player_embedded

Oh no, I hadn't seen this news.  I'm so sad.  We got to meet Hubert at Jorma's Fur Peace Ranch several years ago.  I got to talk to him and I took his hand as we were talking, it was the softest hand I have ever held.  He was very kind and sweet to me, it was a moment I cherish.  RIP Dear Hubert.  RIP

This is really sad news. I was lucky enough to see Hubert many times. A brilliant player and real nice man as well.

Gazza you wrote "his wife Toni."  I knew Toni was his manager, I didn't know they were married.

Yes he was one of the greats. Here's my video of him 3 years ago at BB Kings with George Thorogood, celebrating his 77th birthday, and he was still playing up until he died at 80. RIP

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards pay tribute to blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin

Howlin' Wolf guitarist has passed away aged 80

The Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have paid tribute to blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who has passed away aged 80.

The pair paid their respects to Sumlin, who enjoyed a career that spanned 40 years - including nearly two decades playing guitar with the singer Howlin' Wolf and a stint with Muddy Waters - before he died from heart failure earlier this week (December 4).

Richards, who featured on Sumlin's 2004 solo LP 'About Them Shoes', said: "With sorrow I received the news of Hubert's passing. He put up a long hard fight. To me he was an uncle and a teacher, and all the guitar players must feel the same as myself."

He went on to add: Warm, humours and always encouraging, he was a gentleman of the first order. Miss him, yes, but we have his records. All my condolences to his family.
Jagger, meanwhile, said: "Hubert was an incisive yet delicate blues player. He had a really distinctive and original tone, and was a wonderful foil for Howlin' Wolf's growling vocal style.

"On a song like 'Going Down Slow' he could produce heart rending emotion, and on a piece like 'Wang Dang Doodle', an almost playful femininity. He was an inspiration to us all."

Sumlin, who was nominated for a Grammy award on four separate occasions but never won the prize, was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 2008 and was also included in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time.

It was recently reported that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were set to discuss plans for the 50th anniversary of the first Rolling Stones gig, which takes place on July 12 2012.

Did he ever smoke cigarettes?

I just quit last month after 25 years to an electronic cig.

Nicotine itself is no harmful than caffeine, then mix that in w/ a benzo and I'm floatn' fine.

A very classy move by Mick and Keith!!

From Blue Lena:
____________________________________________________
Just proving once again that Mick & Keith do have hearts of gold. This is from Toni Ann at Hubert Sumlin's official facebook page:

"I just wanted to share with you, Hubert's loving fans, that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have insisted on picking up the full expenses for Hubert's funeral. God Bless the Rolling Stones."

Indeed. Thanks Mick & Keith!
