From the 'Didnt see this one coming' department.....

http://www.keithrichards.com/news/kr_fullNews.aspx?PostID=85

Google has just announced the launch of a new Google Music store in the Android Marketplace. Among the new store's exclusive new offerings is the first in a series of previously unreleased live recordings by the Rolling Stones. First up is the long-bootlegged October 1973 show in Brussels, officially released at last in a new mix overseen by the band.

You can download the whole thing now from the Android Marketplace, or get a free sample in the form of a rare performance of the song "Dancing With Mr. D". Five more shows will be released over the next year, so stay tuned for more announcements. For for more on this new series of treasures from the Stones vaults, check out the video below.

(Note - the footage is from '72..not '73. 'Google music only available to US residents' - WTF?)

From a BBC news feature today - I'd like to think that surely this will soon be available internationally :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15766706

Google unveils Android-based online music store

Google has launched an online music store in the US, which will allow devices running its Android software to buy, store and stream music.

EMI, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal and 23 independent labels are providing content to create a library of 13 million songs.

However, Warner Music Group has opted not to take part at this point.

The service poses a challenge to Apple's dominance of the sector. It launched its iTunes store in 2003.

The popularity of the iPod maker's mobile device helped drive sales.

Social network

However, a new study by the research firm Gartner suggests that more than half of all smartphones sold between July and September ran Android. That accounts for more than 60 million devices.

By comparison Apple's iOS handsets accounted for 15% of the market over the same period, according to the study.

Google is also integrating its new service with its Google+ social network.

Users will be able to share songs with their Circles contacts who can listen to the full length of the tracks without making a purchase.

Competition

Google is not the only tech company trying to make a splash in the music industry.

Blackberry launched its BBM Music service in the UK yesterday. The firm offers users 50 copy-protected tracks of their choice for £4.99 a month.

Members can also listen to their friends' selection. The service is also live in the US, Canada and Australia.

Nokia is pursuing a different model, offering owners of its new Lumia 800 Window Phone use of its Mix Radio app.

The software scans the users' music collections and builds a customised radio station from the firm's 15 million strong library.

Internet radio

Amazon already runs a cloud based music service.

The firm launched its new Kindle Fire tablet earlier this week which may drive further sales from the site.

Streaming subscription service Spotify is also expanding after launching in the US in July. It offers apps for Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

The other big player in the US is the internet radio service, Pandora, which tries to tailor its selection to each user's taste.

$4.99, apparently. In which case, thats pretty good.

From Jagger's facebook page :

The Rolling Stones have released a new live album, "the Brussels Affair". Recorded at Forest National, Belgium, in October 1973, and frequently bootlegged, it is now available to fans in US from Google Music. International fans, stayed tuned for a further announcement."

I doubt the timing is pure coincidence, either.

Five shows from the archives over the next 12 months?

Perfect bit of promotion for a busy year ahead!

The mix sounds absolutely sparkling to me. ... I can't get over this. If this had happened in, say, 2000 or 2001, we'd have been freaking out. Now it's become almost routine. More, please!

This is astounding.  1/2 of Handsome Girls - filmed no less - is released, and now Brussels Affair? In the same week?? And Keith Richards praises Bill Wyman in the Brussels clip?

Whats next? Leeds? El Mocambo?

Either hell is freezing over or the end is imminent.

It sounds great, I just wish there was an option to download in lossless rather than mp3.  I hate those little gaps between tracks. Charlie's drums sound incredible!

There are different songs, apparently. Its a mix of BOTH Brussels shows, whereas 'Brussels Affair' bootleg comes from the afternoon show plus a couple of songs from London 9.9.73.

A Japanese poster on IORR (atsu69)  reckons that these are the sources :

01.Brown Sugar Brussels 1st
02.Gimme Shelter Brussels 2nd
03.Happy Brussels 2nd
04.Tumblin' Dice Brussels 2nd
05.Starfucker Brussels 2nd
06.Dancing With Mr.D Brussels 2nd
07.Heartbreaker (Brussels 2nd?)
08.Angie (Brussels 2nd?)
09.You Can't Always Get- (Brussels 2nd?)
10.Midnight Rambler Brussels 1st
11.Honkytonk Women (Brussels 2nd?)
12.All Down The Line Brussels 2nd
13.Rip This Joint Brussels 2nd
14.Jumping Jack Flash (Brussels 2nd?)
15.Street Fighting Man Brussels 1st

Thankfully, the early show version of 'Midnight Rambler' was kept in. IMO the greatest single live performance of any Stones song ever.

In case anyone's unaware of it, there IS the option of downloading the files as 320 mp3's to your pc.

Hopefully its not too long before those of us outside get an announcement on how to buy this.

This should be bigger and better than Some Girls.

Brussels Affair didn't seem like it needed a "new mix" on it.

I don't know why I'm thinking this but I hope they don't add back up vocals in the new mix.

yes, as well as denied if your servers are in the wrong country. I know we can get Stern show out of the USA using our VPN servers out of NYC. I'm watching the youtube right now about Brussels... I'm pretty sure, there should be a physical CD or at least some type of lossless download... streaming and Mp3's won't cut it.

Presumably its part of a special tie-in with google.

FLAC is $9 on the archive site. Not $7.

Vintage Stones live releases in lossy format for £5.50 ($9). Half the price of a regular CD.

Honestly cant see what there is to be annoyed about.

This is a must for all Stones fans, buy it and just throw away all bootlegs in the garbage.
The sound quality and the mix is just amazing, the best Live recording i've ever heard from the Stones !!!!

Wasnt there one show for which the tickets were sold exclusively to French fans because the Stones didnt play France on this tour?

I think there was even a special express train which took the fans from Gare du Nord in Paris to Brussels and back again.

So, Mick speaks exclusively in French at that show and maybe a mixture of French and English at the other one.

Question...can you burn it onto CD from GOOGLE MUSIC??
Or is it just set up for you for your listening?

And if you can...PLEASE tell me how...i can't seem to find ANY info or instructions...

PA same question was asked on IORR. Here's the answer given. Haven't tried it myself. So can't vouch for it.Hope it helps.
In Google Music, to the right of each track name, an arrow is visible, hover over that and there are several options available, one of them being "Save Song To My Computer"....and voila...the mp3's are downloaded to your computer and you can then burn the mp3's on a disc to play through your stereo

Thanks!! I just dug and dug and finally found this as well:

Any song you download will be formatted as a 320kbps mp3 file.
Save songs from music.google.com to your computer
You can download all songs in the Free and Purchased playlist, one at a time.

Navigate to your 'Free and purchased' playlist
Hover over the song you'd like to download
Click the down arrow to the right of the song title
   Select 'Save to computer'

You can only download each purchased track from the web 2 times
.

I got them and you can download them to your computer and do whatever you want with them.  Don't think the google music can compete with itunes but hey.. its the Stones and I like it!

Just downloading it now and listening to it as I do.

Those opening chords of Brown Sugar (especially when Bill's bass comes in) just sent a chill through me. Cant believe theyve finally done this. And with NO advance leak or gossip.

This should be bigger and better than Some Girls.

Brussels Affair didn't seem like it needed a "new mix" on it.

I don't know why I'm thinking this but I hope they don't add back up vocals in the new mix.

They wont.

This isnt a copy of the 'Brussels Affair' bootleg or any bootleg for that matter.

Almost all of the songs on this are from the second Brussels show. Just three from the first night.

The bootleg is taken from the 1st show with a couple of songs from London 9.9.73.

It's nine bones on the stonesarchives site, but at least they are offering it (btw-prices are standard; I am stoked they are not more). Anyway, the bummer is I think the us option is the google one, which doesn't use Paypal (so you have to sign up for the google stuff, which I am sure is the point), but I didn't see the lossless option, which blows. I know google is trying to hump their cloud service, which wont be lossless, but they should give us the option to purchase it that way... especially considering lossless audio was developed and has flourished as a format here first, it is unbelievable they are ignoring that market. I am going to hold out hope that the flac becomes available for us here in the states. Kills ms to be missin this, for the time being, but if google wants me to sign up for a new wallet, rather than letting me use the one I have for everything else, and if they want me to use a different cloud that is not compatible with all the of the devices I use (which work together), then they need to give me the product I want. Sucks, 'cos I would love to hear this, but I will wait...

After listening to the 320 mp3's, i don't think I gave up much in quality... if I get a lossless version and a/b later, I'm pretty sure, I wan't feel like I got something less now... I know it  sounds crazy, but these mp3's sound fantastic, no brickwalling, I can hear great sepration... the mix is amazing, not like any Brussels bootleged stuff, and some stuff is new mixes or versions not bootlegged... it was amazing to hear, and i listened on my computer speakers too, not my stereo or good ear buds yet... holy shit... I am thinknig this is the best five bucks I ever spent.

Listening right now...wow this thing rocks, never been a big fan of this song, but Starfucker is out of this world, last time I felt like that about a Stones song was when I saw Mick and Keith up close on the B-Stage in 1999 in San Jose during Midnight Rambler, so that's saying something!

listening to angie... a song I can quickly tire of, but this performance is great. Being able to hear the keyboards upfront, and not overdone, like they would become on later tours with Billy Preston... in fact, you couldn't even hear him playing on the bootlegs of 1973 shows... but on here, he's amazing.

i couldn't agree more... I'm bummed, was going to listen today on earbuds at gym in the sauna, and got sucked into a conversation... on computer speakers and home stereo it drives hard... still can't wait for a car drive and the earbuds... it's a good time to be a Stones fan!!!

Getting it now, but a quick question. Will I need to burn this to disk in order to get it to my Itunes library? I'm just curious as to where it will download the files to? I'm gonna go with the flac I guess. But I'm so damned computer illiterate that I'm afraid that I'll download it and then have no idea how to access it! And I work in radio!

mp3 files will play on i-tunes easily, but flac files wont

You can convert flac to wav files and those will play on i-tunes.

are you on the stones archives site or google... it will be easier from stones archives. have you ever done flac before, I can point you easily to tutorials.

I have been using Macintosh Audio for OS X aka MAX... works great, sucks if the files aren't tagged but most of the stuff I download is tagged properly with cue sheets, easy to add the art if needed... does pretty much every type of file format I can think of... for those few occasions, I have RAR expander and some others as backup.

Cannot describe how cool it was to see them release this finally. So cool that the world can share what we have enjoyed for so long.

I am surprised though that no one here has mentioned the SFM version they chose to include. Its the shitty one! Out of the two versions on the Europe 73 boot (I'm assuming these were from the early and late show respectively), they official release chose the crap version! I can't understand it. This is not just personal semantics. The one used is an out of tune mess at the end, compared to the superbly clean MT and band perfectly coming together to close it out. Surely I'm not dreaming this??

it's interesting to me, at this point, that Texas 78 isn't considered part of this series... I wonder if it will be included in some way later... there's something about that that makes me wonder... so I posted it.

go to demonoid... send me a PM with your email... you will hopefully know how to download torrents and decode flac files, and this is a good time to learn, which is really simple... and you will be able to get it... if you want, I can also just send you an email connecting you to the mp3's via my dropbox account.

I managed to get it through Soulseek! Thx for the help anyway!

This is great... Although this version of YCAGWYW is subpar compared to the one I had, with the epic Mick Taylor solo blending perfect with the sax solo Sad

Let us know how it sounds like, I'm always a bit wary of armchair tweakers who basically claim to put a pro like Clearmountain to shame. Not exactly the same but we've already had all the Mickboy "remasters"...

Oh my god... I just started doing an a/b, and only made ti gimme shelter... dynamic, is not what it is, it is the opposite. The music is limited, crushed... honestly, I didn't and still don't think there's much wrong with the mastering on this official release. It isn't brickwalled or loud, i hear ever instrument and when I play it loud, it doesn't clip or distort... this dynamic remaster, the first thing I noticed was it was quiet, but not a good quiet, there audience was removed, and the drums sounded flat...  do ont bother, or bother and see for yourself, b/c your mileage may vary... it's all about our ears...

I never could quite figure out why the Stones chose to release the turgid, slow as molasses and insomnia-curing Love You Live instead of the Brussels recording, other than the fact that Mick Taylor is blazing throughout and was no longer in the band. The truth is, the 1975-77 Stones had as much in common musically with the 1973 band as the 1972 Dolphins have with their current incarnation.

Why a Rolling Stones bootleg is one of my albums of the year

Their recent reissues might be rubbish, but 1973 bootleg Brussels Affair shows the Stones at their onstage peak

...

One of my albums of the year has just arrived, and it pains me to say it's by the Rolling Stones.

I know, merely mentioning them these days conjures up the acrid smell of their current incarnation, not even a shadow of a ghost of an imitation of their former selves. Moreover, they are maintaining the shameless and unsatisfactory burst of nostalgia that began with last year's Exile on Main Street reissue, presumably to keep the money coming in while they decide whether or not to haul themselves around the planet for yet another tour. The latest superfluous item is this week's re-release of the chronically overrated Some Girls. Fancy some 34-year-old out-takes not even good enough to be included on 1981's odds-and-sods collection Tattoo You, spruced up with new Mick Jagger vocal parts? You really do not.

And so to the online side of their operation. Stonesarchivestore.com has recently been launched, with the standard-issue promises that these days pass for white-knuckle rock excitement: "Unheard music", "rare merchandise", "signed lithographs". But wait! By way of bringing all this to our attention, this new enterprise has begun with the online release of the 1973 live bootleg known as Brussels Affair – put to tape in the well-known R&B heartland that is Belgium, long whispered about as a glimpse of the group at their all-time onstage peak, and put up in fragments on YouTube. Not that anyone seems to have noticed, but it's on sale for what currency converters today put at £4.46, which was enough to tweak my curiosity.

It is, as I half-expected, unimpeachably great: a beautifully recorded, often unhinged 70 minutes during which the Stones manage to sound like the Platonic ideal of a rock band: simultaneously tight, unhinged, absolutely convincing, and gloriously ludicrous. Stones lore has long held that even at their height, they could swing between being awful one night and inspirational the next, and what this recording proves is just how jaw-dropping the latter occasions could be.

At the risk of sounding like the man from Jazz Club, the bass and drums are so wonderfully lithe and interlocked as to sound supernatural. As opposed to his 21st-century habit of just about managing the riffs in between letting loose an open-tuned "clang" once in a while, Keith Richards' rhythm guitar lives up to expectation and drives the whole band, while Mick Taylor's soloing threads itself through the rest of the music with grace and understatement. Mick Jagger, looking back, was at the juncture beyond which lay pantomimic absurdity and a reluctance to sing in what you and I would recognise as English, but everything here is pitched exactly right: in between addressing the crowd in schoolboy French, he growls and hollers to pretty thrilling effect; on the slow songs, he's simply great.

This was late 1973, when Goat's Head Soup had just been released – and, according to retrospective received opinion, the Stones had exited the run of form that stretched from 1968 to 1972. To my mind, this view of things omits how good large swathes of GHS actually were, a point underlined here by versions of Dancing With Mr D, Star Star (or, if you prefer, Starfucker), Angie and Doo Doo Doo Dooo (Heartbreaker). The only shame is the non-appearance of Winter, one of my favourite Stones songs – though Taylor inserts hints of it into a gorgeous 11-minute reading of You Can't Always Get What You Want, so all is well.

So, some concluding thoughts. Leaving aside a disappointing go at Gimme Shelter (which has never worked live, even then), Brussels Affair is better even than 1970's Get Yer Ya Ya's Out – and, unlike that record, apparently unsullied by post-production cheating. It shreds such other Stones in-concert albums as Love You Live, the woeful Still Life, and the even more miserable Flashpoint. Only one mystery hangs over the whole thing: why did they take the best part of 40 years to release it?

They werent. Some songs are from the Brussels Affair bootleg, but most aren't.

Theyve tried to make it more interesting for fans by releasing a combination of both shows, meaning that a lot of the songs are different from what was broadcast. Most of these songs come from the 2nd show.

If they'd simply re-issued the bootleg, most hardcore fans would probably have complained that they already had it anyway.

As Pdog alluded above, it was legal issues with ABKCO. They couldnt release ABKCO era songs on live albums until 1976. So, they couldnt put out live albums from 1972 and 1973 with songs like JJF, Honky Tonk Women, etc.

That limitation had expired by the time Love You Live came out in 1977. As far as I know, they were allowed to release live performances of the ABKCO songs if they were recorded in 1976, but not if they were recorded any earlier....and thats why the source credits on the cover are inaccurate, as they claim the songs were recorded in Paris 1976 and Toronto 1977.  In reality, not only were there songs from London 1976 on the album, but material from both Toronto and LA in 1975 as well.  Fingerprint File and IORR are from Toronto '75 and Sympathy For the Devil comes from Los Angeles.  'Sympathy' is of course an ABKCO-era track.  It wasnt even PLAYED at any of the four Paris shows in 1976, although they did play it at 4 of the 6 London shows.

i'm assuming you used Google Music... look where the song is, and if you take your cursor over the song title, and head to the right, you will see a small triangle shape, click it, it will you allow you as an option to save to computer...

You know, I judge this show by the quality of Happy. The version on the bootleg - from the first show, if I'm not mistaken - is probably the finest performance of the song in existence. Keith Richards SOUNDS LIKE HE IS GOING TO DIE. That version of Happy sounds like his last. Every second - every note - is soaked in this unspeakable drama; Keith is screaming his final will and testament to any and all sundry.

On the new release? Well, Happy kicks ass, to sure. But, I dunno... it lacks that edge-of-desperation drama. I wonder what happened in those few, short hours between shows?

I'd say the Rambler more than makes up for it though. Pure brilliance! Oh, and Pdog, I got it burned to disk and I somehow managed to get it to transfer to ITunes! Thanks for your help.

I must say it's the greatest Tumblin' Dice that I've ever heard. Jagger just owns it on that number. Especially near the end when he just ad libs. Starfucker kills it too. Did I mention Rambler?! Damn it's good to be a Stones' fan these days! Or has someone already said that?

I can imagine he smoked some cigarettes, snorted some coke and injected a shot or two of heroin in his ass... probably nodded a bit, had a garbled conversation and drank some whiskey... maybe he at a bite or two, attempted sex... who knows... what's amazing to me is, to hear of his state of mind, before going onstage and then somehow pull off a gig before going back into that state, is amazing...

For what it's worth, someone has already "remastered" it and posted it on Demonoid...I actually like it even better.  More punch and dynamic range, less volume...and Taylor's a little louder in the mix.

Don't know if anyone from the Stones camp reads the boards, but in the event that they do a heartfelt thank you for releasing this performance from '73.  The qaulity, the pricing, truly a gift to the long time fan base.

Except for Star Star, it's not that great an upgrade.  Bass and drums are better, but I can't help feel there was something malicious in mixing Taylor down.

Didn't really notice he had been mixed down and I'll say that  I really love MT's guitar playing, who doesn't, but honestly he was a bit "loud" at times in 1973...like he was on Dylan's "Real Live" a decade later.

having read alot on this and lsitened to alot of versions... it seems they brought Keith up, b/c he had been mixed to low and lowered MT a bit... which for me is fine for most of the songs, b/c there's times he is brilliant and othet times he is just noodling and it gets annoying... if I have to take the good with the bad, it's an even push, i like this mix, it will probably be my go to version from now on...

Downloading it now. As FLAC that is, so we'll see afterwards if i'll ever get it to play, or burn or put into Itunes...

Any artwork around somewhere?

Can someone advise/confirm this is normal...?
or did this happen while converting the FLACS?
i definitely burned WITHOUT pauses...

That's funny, I burned the files to a cd using my old Nero 9 program (Nero Express mode)  I just clicked the box asking about the pause between tracks.  Worked fine, no gaps.

On another note, not that I'm complaining mind you, why are the Stones offering the those of us in the US MP3 quality files and Abkco is offering 24bit/176khz DVD-A audio resolution on all the Stones classics??

Someone is missing the boat here imho.  Are there really that many fans of the Stones, who have waited years for an archival release of this sort, now willing to listen after a decades long wait to this classic on an iphone or an ipod.  The average fan struggling to figure out how to put it on a format they're comfortable with.

Like everyone else, I'll take what I can get.  Just makes very little sense.

Can't help but think of the quality that Neil Young wanted for his archival material.  My guess is Mick's continued efforts to entertain younger/newer fans.

Seems a bug in nero. above worked for me as well, but if you go via NERO START SMART it does not take the settings

do the files stay tagged? I have used Xact to convert Flac to wav, but no tagging stayed, I've been using Max, but it has started tweaking on me since I upgraded my OS and updated it as well...

I have no use for wav files so I am not sure but I know Xact does support tags. I was just writing back and forth with the guy who wrote Xact because of an issue with the designation FLAC and batch conversions.

This is the best live release in the history of man.
I've had several near-death experiences driving while cranking up Midnight Rambler the past few weeks...

Only a shame Stones Inc. haven't promoted this - the general public need Brussels Affair!
