When Mick and Keith were openly feuding and releasing solo albums and going on solo tours around 1985-1989, did you think it was the end of the Stones?

I bet with it being the pre-internet era, many must've been shocked when there was news of the 1989 tour--The Stones had not toured since 1982, the musically landscape had changed VASTLY since they were last on stage together. Arguably, The Stones were no longer truly relevent on the music scene--they were legends and popular no doubt, but no longer the dangerous, unpredictable, lean act that lit up the world from '68-'82. Keith and Mick's friendship was no more; Ian was gone. It was truly a new era.

I seem to remember rumours of them planning a tour in 84 and that never happened, then seperate performancies at Live Aid were a sign that things were not well.
Mick's solo albums were not seen as a threat at the time, but Jagger's interview in Q in 87 where he said something like " who cares if there's a Rolling Stones anymore ?" were, for me confirmation that it was probably over. When Keith signed a solo deal with Virgin, I thought they were gone for good.

All of this was pre internet,so you would only catch snippits of info. and rumours and have to make your own mind up....a different world !

Big Shock when it was announced in early 89 that the were going to record and tour again.

The pre-internet days were different times indeed.

I didn't realize how close it was to being over until all of the Steel Wheels interviews came about, and the reporters making many comments about the fueds between Mick and Keith nearly ending the band.

any Howard Stern fans here... Stern has made many comments about the recent stuff and the book, taking mick's side. Me persoanlly think it's just the media creating way more than is there... which is why they don't even want it mentioned in interviews as questions, it's a waste of time.  All Keith said was Mick has huge balls, and joked about his dick, which is lame, but far from him  going for the jugular.

I listen to Howard every day. I think people on messageboards made a much bigger deal about it than anything else.  Friends bust chops all the time. I do it religiously to all of my friends. We goof on each other and it's all in good fun. People need to relax about Mick's penis.
