The Doors and the Stones

A question: Did the Stones and the Doors ever interact in any way?
I know Keith seemed to look down on Jim Morrison but Morrison really respected/felt a sense of kinship with Brian (writing a poem dedicated to Brian when he learned of Brian's death). Did they ever meet or hang out? I read that some people back around 1967, 1968 were calling The Doors the American Stones.

The Doors, who I like, definitely were inspired by Midnight Rambler and pretty much copied it's structure into L.A. Woman.  Subtle start, tempo increase, bluesy breakdown - it's undeniable.

Maybe...I think it was just a general bluesy thing that was going on in the late 60s/early 70s. Consider Janis' version of Me and Bobby McGee--same sort of structure. And Zeppelin's first album, which came out right around the time of Beggar's Banquet. It was just the general sound of the era.

I heard btw that Jim, while in Paris, got an advance copy of Sticky Fingers--and apparently he loved it. He also referred to Mick as a "prince among men."

Jagger and Morrison had dinner together the night of a Doors show at the Hollywood Bowl.  IIRC they didn't get on very well and their professional rivalry was strongly in play.  Mick sat through the show and had uncomplimentary things to say about the Doors performance.

Bill Wyman summed up my attitude towards the Doors. He said something to the effect of (regarding a show at the Whiskey I think): we watched Jim Morrison try to be Mick for 40 minutes then left bored.

Only thing is Morrison & Jagger are so different, one stays still hanging onto the microphone while the other dances all over the stage, totally different.

The important words are try to be like Mick. I would bet anything that 95% of lead singers would love to move like Mick but there is not a single person in the world who can do it. Essentially, the music is very different because the Stones are, in my opinion, more sophisticated and bigger students of blues and rhythm and blues. He may have hung onto the mic but I've always thought singers who do that are hanging on because they can't move well and are just hiding that. People always point to how different these singers are to Mick but I've always thought that even if the music is different, they are all ripping him off in one way or another but they just can't do it.

I don't think you can say Morrison tried to be Mick...Too utterly different guys and mindsets. Morrison viewed music as something more than just music. The guy was a poet first, rockstar second, crooner third. Mick was a rockstar first, entertainer second, lyricist third. While I love the Stones, I do think Morrison had more artistic integrity. I know he ensured that while he was alive none of The Doors music was used for commercials, even though the other 3 guys wanted to do it. The guy viewed music as art...I don't know what Mick views music as.

The thing is, I think The Doors meant every little way they experimented. Like, it wasn't just a joke to them. Whereas with the Stones, at least Mick looks at albums like Their Satanic Majesties' and songs like Lady Jane as sort of jokes...Doesn't really value them for what they are and keeps to the Stones image. The Doors, Morrison at least, tried to be different than that. He grew his beard out specifically to test people: To see if he was loved just for being "Jim Morrison of The Doors", or if he was loved for just being a person. A guy who broke boundaries and didn't care about taboos and had a good time doing so.

Mick may have rolled his eyes while changing the lyrics of Let's Spend the Night Together on Ed Sullivan...But Jim just sang the actual lyric in Light My Fire because he didn't give a damn about censorship.

I always thought of Mick as sort of a poseur. He sings about drugs and all this stuff, but I don't think he actually lived it as much as his songs would make you think. Keith did, Keith's never been a pretender--He's a true no BS rocker. I'm not saying that diminishes Mick as an entertainer; He's an amazing singer, dancer and lyricist...But he didn't really live the life he sang about; Morrison did and sadly paid the price for it.

I mean consider 1967:
...

1970:
...

While Morrison didn't destroy his mind or his talent like poor Brian did...He did destroy his body and like Brian became a casualty of the 60s/70s. I respect guys like Brian, Keith, and Morrison more than I respect Mick because they lived (and in some cases, died) the life they sang about. Keith and Brian were the real deal and Brian and Morrison were like the Princes of the Psychedelic era.

The older i get, the more i realise how much i'd fucking belt Jim Morrison right in the nose if i was in his band. And i think it's kinda immature to admire a hopless drunk & druggie. I sure would not be impressed if i paid my hard earned $6.00 to see some dick collapse on stage (or not even make it onstage!), and have the keyboard player sing the songs.

Imagine Jagger falling down drunk & Leavell taking over the show??

As i as get older, i am starting to feel the same way about my drumming hero Keith Moon.

I don't think so, not even Harmonica which a lot of lead singers learn, I read his Bio, "No One Here Gets Out Alive" his thing was strictly words, Poetry, oh yeah, he played Maracas, if you want to call that a instrument.

So do you admire Keith or Ronnie? Keith was a "hopeless druggie" up till '78 and Ronnie's still an up an down drunk.
What about Brian? Did all the same kind of stuff as Morrison. Yet Brian was still a great musician, was he not?
