Funny...I don't hear cheapness at all. I think you look at the material in a wrong way: it was around for more than 30 years. It's good enough for others to have fun with, lets say a band member doing a solo disc. But in 2011, after seeing people having fun because of the bonus stuff on the Exile reissue (and making extra money, but that's fair), the Stones decide to dust off the leftovers from one of the other great albums, and upgrade the half finished stuff with added vocals and whatnot. I would've loved the super set to have an extra disc with the raw material, but I have most from the boots.

Why can a writer revisit a manuscript he didn't touch for 30 years, or turn an old short story into a monumental big novel without dealing with being accused of cheapness?

Bottom line: if it bothers you much, don't buy the record. It's what I did with Supershitty.

SPOILER WARNING...I will probably continue to post random thoughts as I listen over and over...

re: No Spare Parts...

When it was released a few weeks back...I thought it was "just ok"...a good song...but certainly not "a single".

I still feel that way about the "single" part...but it sounds REALLY nice in the middle of the rest of the songs...even the drum thing at 3:34 (lol).
It showcases another side of the band in the middle of all the other rockers.
I noticed no reggae ala Stones...Don't Be a Stranger is kinda close and has a tropical feeling

Johnnie Walker's
Sounds Of The 70s

Sunday 1500 - 1700
BBC Radio 2

Johnnie Walker celebrates the music of a colourful and eclectic decade. This week he catches up with Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts, of The Rolling Stones, as they re-release their 1978 album Some Girls.

Having sold over six million copies and becoming their biggest selling album in the US, Some Girls represented a shift in the musical direction of the Stones. The first album to feature Ronnie Wood as a full member of the band, his guitar playing meshed with Keith Richards to give the band a whole new sound and direction. Johnnie finds out from Ronnie and Charlie exactly what the recording of the album was like in a time of change and development for the band.

On the eve of Some Girls' re-release, Johnnie discovers what made it such a seminal album for the band and why it continues to be one of their most loved albums.

These extra tracks are good, people. I like it even better than the "Exile" stuff.

Maybe it's personal bias, but the "Some Girls" sound was the reason I became obsessed with the band. In middle school, in the late-'80s, I heard all the "Hot Rocks" stuff, liked it, preferred it to the Beatles, etc. "Some Girls" was the first long-player I bought (on cassette!). My immediate (in retrospect juvenile) impression was that the Stones sounded "modern"; they didn't sound like the "the '60s." The older I got, the more I came to appreciate the '60s (and the '50s and the '40s, etc.)

But, as a kid, it was "Some Girls" that made the Stones accessible and worthy of real-time fanaticism.

Mel...if there was a "LIKE" button...I would press it now!!!

I find it interesting...that out of the bonus songs...there is not another "Miss You"esque song.
To get that 70's sound, they put out MISS YOU...but not another one like it...IMO...
and i don't include, "Disco Music"...which is somehow a joke to me...as if they would
ever release a song called that or praising/mocking Disco...

Am I mistaken?

Their adventures with all things funk/disco began before and went on after, at least officially... not many outtakes along the lines of these adventures...
Fingerprint File
hot Stuff
Miss You
Everything Is Turning To Gold
Dance
I think they touched on the same sound with Heaven, but in a much more subdued way... I can't think of much in outtake/demo dept. besides disco music where they wnet with this style/genre... and After Harlem Shuffle, they seemed to drift away from it, probably a sign of musical direction and the friction inside the band... there was none of it to be found on Steel Wheels, that's for sure!!!

I enjoyed the interview. Nice to get to hear Charlie speak a little.

It's strange that Mick or Keith haven't really done loads of promo for this album. They certainly haven't promoted it as strongly as they did the Exile reissue. I wonder how it will do commercially. It certainly won't touch number 1 here in the UK as Rihanna and One Direction (X-Factor boy band) have new albums out.

Well, Mick did promote it before the Fort Worth film...in all fairness...a taped-for- live interview is pretty good.

I really love the new piano in "Do You Think I Really Care" and I think it's a pitty that it doesn't last 6.10 minutes as in the "Original" I prefer the new one including new vocals. Nice job Mick!

how much promo you going to do for something like this, in the digital age, with a band with base fans, not really going to get the attention of too many new ones, at least not ones who buy music.

It won't touch the Top 20 either, too much high profile releases at the same time and the promotion was almost non-existent by comparison with Exile, maybe can grap a spot in the Top 30 with much luck, both in UK & US.

Not quite. 'When Youre Gone' was recorded for Some Girls - with vocals, but re-cut (and re-titled) as an instrumental by Ronnie in 1981.

Big fan of that song here too and the new version is great...until Mick starts shouting, that really wasn't necessary even if I get why he's doing it and could see a video Neigbours style.

I warmed up a lot to No Spare Parts too, yeah mo real bridge (like Plundered) but it has a great vibe and I hear a bit of Gangster's Moll (as heard on The Lonely at the Top boot, not the Jagger/Beck version), a great outtake we probably won't see on a Deluxe given the poor opinion Mick has of ER and arguably lack of classics.

I Love You Too Much is great too, love the guitars and their meshing with the voices at the end of the chorus.

not that it's numbers will be huge, but does a digital release like this, even have a chance of being considered for charts, if it was to blow up and sell some insane amount?

Rolling Stones dress up 'Some Girls' for reissue
By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAYUpdated 10h 56m ago

When the Rolling Stones began jamming at a Paris rehearsal hall in October 1977, disco and punk were wrestling for cultural dominance and threatening to annihilate rock's mainstream giants.

Like every trend before and since, neither intimidated nor impeded the Stones, who surfaced in 1978 with chart-topper Some Girls, a sharp, diverse batch of rock, R&B, dance and country that won over a new generation and remains the band's best-selling album (6 million-plus).

It returns Monday as a remastered, expanded reissue in deluxe, super-deluxe and digital editions. (Some Girls Live in Texas '78, on DVD and Blu-ray, is also out Monday.) Along with classics Miss You, Shattered, Beast of Burden and Respectable, the set offers 12 previously unreleased tracks that were unearthed this year.

"Some have been out in bootleg form," says Mick Jagger, 68, who searched the vaults with producer Don Was. "There were a few surprises. Some songs were more finished and just had to be mixed. And some didn't have any lyrics or were very fragmentary. Some were too demo-sounding, and I just threw them out."

The songs that were 'left over'

In fleshing out the tunes, "we kept everything in context," says Keith Richards, 67. "You don't want to fool around too much and pretty them up with digital extras. Leave it in its own time

The Girls reissue, which follows last year's celebrated repackaging of 1972's Exile on Main Street, introduces rocker I Love You Too Much, a cover of Hank Williams' You Win Again, obscure B-side So Young, twangy No Spare Parts, harmonica-laced Keep Up Blues, Tallahassee Lassie (featuring John Fogerty) and Claudine, inspired by French chanteuse Claudine Longet, who was accused of killing her ski-champ boyfriend, Spider Sabich.

"Unlike Exile, there was a lot more left over," Richards says. "Claudine should have been on the first one, but we had deadlines."

Timing isn't the only reason songs didn't make the cut.

"In the case of the countryish ones, if you'd put them all out on Some Girls, it would have been a country album," Jagger says. "So we picked our best one, and also the one that was finished. You should finish them all, but that's not what happens. You concentrate on the 10 or 11 you've got, and the others fall by the wayside."

Miss You, a nod to the disco era, sprang from Jagger's love of dance music and the New York club scene. Richards didn't object.

"Disco is just another funk beat," he says. "None of us dreamt of making a disco album, but if you can come up with a primo disco track, that would be our input. And Miss You made it."

Not pumped about punk

As for ascendant punk rockers, who both jeered and imitated the Stones, "all they could do was be a bad copy of me," Richards says with a gruff laugh. "I loved the energy. They were coming on as strong as we did 10 years earlier. But my problem with punk, man, is they can't play. All they got is attitude and nothing else."

Jagger is similarly dismissive.

"Punk was such a short-lived phenomenon," he says. "Record labels were trying to hop on it, (but) it wasn't a big commercial success. You're hard put to name more than two American punk bands."

Girls stirred controversy for salacious lyrics and a cover that depicted the Stones in drag alongside pictures of famous women.

"Some girls weren't so happy," Richards says, referring to Lucille Ball, Raquel Welch and others whose likenesses hadn't been legally cleared, requiring a recall and redo. "We didn't ask them. We should have been more gentlemanly."

He and Jagger are game for more reissues, within reason.

"We had this idea that we'd reinvigorate certain albums by finding other songs recorded in that time that would hold up," Jagger says. "That sounded like a better idea than doing mindless compilations."

Richards adds: "If there's something interesting that helps to understand the album, let's do it. Otherwise, I'm not one to rehash stuff. We do have so much in the can. We've been around a while, you know?"

Band has 'no golden plan'
The Rolling Stones will hit their golden anniversary next year, fueling expectations for a tour. No plans for a 50th blowout have been revealed, though rumors flared when Keith Richards announced that he, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood intended to convene soon to jam.

"It all sounds great, and I'm sure we're going to do lots and lots of wonderful things," says Mick Jagger, who isn't participating in those sessions. "What the future may hold is known only to God and myself. I'll talk after we've done it rather than before."

Richards hopes for a 2012 return but says he and his bandmates are simply "getting our chops back together. We haven't played together for four years or so. We all happen to be in England in December. I don't want to blow it up into anything. There’s no golden plan."

Not officially, anyway.

“Nothing is supposed to be clear,” Richards allows. “It’s intended to be murky so you don’t know what the hell’s going on until we let you know.”

Is that what Jagger would say?

I don't recall the Big G in his syntax before...It strikes me as out of character...

Yeah, sounds a bit pompous to be straight Mick.

Also it would be nice to have a half-decent interviewer who would ask them why the didn't use the rather excellent Fiji Jim and Misty Roads or It's a Lie.
