Because every tour in the past thirty years had them in the studio and releasing brand new studio recorded product for a tour is why. Every tour had an album to coincide. The only one that didn't was the 2002-2003 Licks extravaganza... but even then they "insisted" on going into the studio and recording and releasing some new songs to prove that they are not a nostalgia act. They certainly didn't have to do that. Why waste a few weeks time effort and work when it isn't needed at all? They could of more than easily filled the gaps on four slots with other songs from their catalog already recorded and or released. The reason is they do not want to be classified as a nostalgia act. That's why. Sure they havent put out but two albums from 97 on...but they toured only three times. Two out of those three times they released a brand new studio album and the other time they insisted on recoding and releasing new stuff. Plain and simple.. They will not go the route of being a nostalgia act. They will remain The Stones until the end.

I will ask you this... you act as if their is no little to no indication they will do another album this time... Well what indication have they given us that they will not? Everything in their track record, recent comments, and this recent and quite early early and purposefully leaked band meeting lends to the fact that they most likely will...

Ian

The Licks tour proved they werent a nostalgia act? And this was cemented beyond reasonable doubt by tacking on four songs to 40 Licks - only one of which was played on the tour and then never again? Are you serious? What revisionist bollocks!

The Bigger Bang tour was effectively Licks Part II. The new songs were largely forgotten about within months. The live document of the tour was taken from two shows which didnt include a single song from the album they were touring behind. 40 Licks was the biggest selling Stones album for 30 years. Nostalgia is their 'future'. And with that record out of print, there's probably a market for something similar to take it's place. And its helped by the fact that UMG have done a bloody good job with promoting and selling the Exile reissue.

As for the last bit. The onus is on them to prove something. Its not on me to disprove a negative. I dont know if they'll make a new record or not. I hope they do. I'm saying that theres no pressure on them to do so from their record label, and that the same record label have two multi-disc Stones releases due for release in 2012. A studio album is a lesser priority. And it requires more work from the band for a project that they're unlikely to promote.

Can you please enlighten me how pictures of them leaving an office appears to indicate that they're about to make a new record?

Your right. There is absolutely no pressure on them to make another record. However, I think it is in their agenda by thier comments about the matter and how they normally go about things. Sure, you could say nostalgia plays the major role of getting people to their shows, but not in the sense of The Bee-Gees, or even Fleetwood Mac for that matter. They insist of recording an album to go against that mind-set for them. I know ABB was not played much. Still, the did write, record, and mix it. It was a studio release. It sold some millions, and it was a damn solid album. So whether they play it alot or don't is not the point. The point is they invest their time and effort in making them almost every single time. I feel this time will be the same.

Well, like you,Ian,  I'm a fan of their last record. I do genuinely believe they put a lot of effort into it and wanted to BELIEVE that they could go on the road, play several songs from it and make a record that would 'last'. It even got their best reviews in 25 years.

The main problem with putting that plan into action is that the people who buy Stones tickets are generally older fans (or more often 'box tickers' who want to say theyve 'seen' a legendary act) - they're generally not interested in what the Stones are doing in the 21st century.  After a few shows, that becomes more and more obvious to the band and they tailor the show accordingly and resort to 'pandering' instead of 'promoting'.

They missed a HUGE opportunity on the last tour by not including a copy of the new album with each ticket purchase. The ticket buyer would have had NO excuse.

Its a vicious circle. If you're going to ask people to pay $500 for a ticket then by the very nature of that demand, you're going to get an older audience. And older audiences want nostalgia. And for $500 they expect to get it. So, not only do they exclude a sizeable percentage of a potential audience, but they allow the audience they DO get to dictate the type of show that they're going to play. The days of going out and hitting the audience up the face with 6 or 7 new songs in a row whether-they-like-it-or-not  á la 1978 are long gone.

Different era. Different audience. Different band. Different mindset.

From Mick's SH interview in Spinner:

What do you have planned with the Stones right now?
I just finished off doing all the outtakes for the 'Some Girls' album we're releasing at Thanksgiving. We did 'Exile,' we did a lot of different takes, a lot of different cuts that hadn't come out before, so we're doing the similar kind of thing with 'Some Girls,' so I've just been doing them because a lot of them weren't complete, so I had to complete them, and then we're gonna mix those and put them out for Thanksgiving.

Gonna have much to be thankful for in November...

it's funny you mention that... when I took my Dad to the Philly show, I gave him a copy of Bigger Bang... I'm a marketing genius... and I spent the last few years doing houe chores and shit like that... what the fuck do the pay these assholes at labels and tour promoters to do... waste of money IMO... I could do  the same work quicker and cheaper and get better results.

Presumably that interview is a few weeks old as well....according to carlostones on IORR (who I believe has links to UMG in Brazil), the Some Girls deluxe isn't likely to come out until 2012.

Presumably it's early in 2012.

I think Mick as well as the rest of the Stones machine might be a bit too "English" to make THANKSGIVING a point of release...there is too much stress on it...as if the ROW would know when that is...the  quote would be more credible if he had said "for the holidays" or for an "early winter/late fall" release...IMO

Everyone is spinning the conversation...

I never said that there was a great demand for a new Stones album. I never said their record label wouldn't be more focused on their back catalog. I never said nostalgia wasn't a big part of their act.

*All I am saying is I think they will record and release an album for this tour based on my aforementioned reasons- (nothing more).

I should of figured (although I don't understand it..) that I would once again be the "lone-wolf" in thinking that was most likely in the cards for them again this time out. Just look at their track record... Why would anyone not think they most likely will release an album being as they almost always do for a major tour.

Beacuse their hasn't been one hint of a sniff that they plan to record anything new. Yes,Mick is very careful with his words. But again. Not even a hint of a whiff from him that the Stones might try and do a complete new record. Never mind the mountain of evidence Gazza has presented to you that they have no plans to do a completely new album...........But hey no problem being a Lone WOlf Ian. Unless your a lone wolf who plans to blow up buildings then their might be a problem. Puke all over me (wait that is BLEED)

almost always? If youre going back to the 80s and 90s when they still thought of themselves as a 'current' band then fair enough. Back then bands toured to promote a record, as the record was where the money was.

The Rolling Stones - more so in the 21st century - release a record as an 'excuse' to tour. The revenue from selling 2 million albums is miniscule when you compare it to grossing half a billion dollars from a tour.

However, to think that they still seem themselves as a 'current' act based on the fact that theyve recorded one full album, released only 22 songs in total and have spent about 6 weeks together as a four piece in recording studios since summer 1997 and that their recent release history has been geared towards their back catalogue - well, then, I'd respectfully suggest you're merely kidding no one but yourself.

The last ten years and the last two tours have been geared towards nostalgia. They're a different band with a different modus operandi post- Licks. Quite how anyone can't grasp that baffles me. It doesnt bother me that much - it is what it is.

If they make a new record, great. But I hope you're not too disappointed when they end up playing very little from it.

Yep, again, that says it all.

I don't see them putting out a new album, too much work, too little reward. Besides it would only dilute their recording legacy even more, I mean ABB was a decent album and they certainly did the best they could but it went nowhere, at least nowhere big. Why bother?

At this point, their energy, at least Mick's, is probably best spent on enhancing their best periods, like they did for Exile and now for SG, not sure what's next though. I for one wouldn't mind seeing a B2B deluxe version, especially with the wealth of unreleased songs according to Karnach. Keith could also resurrect his "untampered" version of MAWGJuiced.

SOME GIRLS TO BE RELEASED THIS NOVEMBER

...

The Rolling Stones are pleased to announce the release on November 21, 2011 of the re-mastered, expanded, Super-Deluxe, Deluxe and Digital editions of Some Girls, the groundbreaking album which introduced the music of the Rolling Stones to a whole new generation of fans.

Justly considered one of the finest works by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ronnie Wood, Some Girls topped the US charts over three decades ago and remains the best selling album of their storied career. This new package will include some undiscovered gems that include tracks that have recently been unearthed from the Rolling Stones vaults by producer Don Was. Further details of the tracks will be unveiled at a later date.
Some Girls is the Rolling Stones' most direct and diverse collection of material, from Mick Jagger's irresistible falsetto on the four-on-the-floor filler Miss You, their eighth US number one, to the country-flavoured Far Away Eyes via the Chuck Berry meets punk snarl of Respectable. And let's not forget the sensuous, Beast Of Burden, one of Keith Richards’ finest tunes, which reached number 8 on the US singles chart, the garage rock of Shattered, the album's third US Top 40 entry, and the soulful swagger of the group's version of The Temptations' Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), another timeless offering in their canon of classic Stones Motown covers.

Following the critical praise and commercial success afforded the re-mastered, expanded editions of Exile On Main Street, which matched the chart performance of the epochal 1972 album, and returned the Rolling Stones to their rightful place at the top of the British charts in 2010, the extensive reissue of Some Girls constitutes the next step in the band's ongoing relationship with Universal Music Group. This started in April 2008 with Shine A Light, the soundtrack from the stunning concert film directed by Martin Scorsese, and has encompassed the reissues of the Rolling Stones re-mastered, post-1971 studio albums, several live albums and classic compilations, and the exhaustive box-set Singles 1971-2006 earlier this year.
Some Girls holds a special place in the history of the Rolling Stones and demonstrates why they remain one of the most thrilling and influential bands of all time. The 1978 album features a Keith Richards' classic Before They Make Me Run, a signature song he stills performs defiantly to this day. Some Girls documented Mick Jagger's love of 70’s funk reflected in Miss You, the dance track that wrongfooted many people, made the club and black charts, and made it okay for other mainstream acts at the time to ‘go disco’.

The 1978 album courted controversy because of Jagger's tongue-in-cheek lyrics on the title track, on Miss You and on Respectable, perceived as a retort to the punk and new wave groups who had borrowed so much attitude and copped so many anti-establishment moves from the Rolling Stones. Ironically, the furore around the elaborate Some Girls package, designed by Peter Corriston and featuring the band members in drag – a nod in the direction of the picture on their 1966 single Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow? – and likenesses of Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Raquel Welch, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe that hadn't been legally cleared, necessitating a swift withdrawal and rethink.

Some Girls demonstrated the distinctive and definitive riffing from Keith Richards, with its abundance of unstoppable licks and majestic power chords driving the band into its brand new musical direction. This album not only defined him and his playing, but also defined a new era for the Rolling Stones, which Richards since described as a ‘sense of renewal’. Some Girls marks the only other time since recording Satisfaction where Richards used an effects pedal to ‘elevate’ the sound.

The album cemented the position of guitarist Ronnie Wood, who had joined in 1975, and added his trademark slide and pedal steel playing to several of the album's most memorable tracks, including When The Whip Comes Down and Shattered. He also co-wrote the Shattered B-side Everything Is Turning To Gold. Some Girls also marked a move to the Pathé Marconi Studios in Paris for the Glimmer Twins production team of Jagger and Richards. These factors helped what is arguably the group's most focused and dynamic album, driven by the sans pareil rhythm section of drummer Charlie Watts and bassist Bill Wyman. Some Girls featured fewer guest musicians than any Rolling Stones albums since 1971, but the contributions keyboard-player Ian McLagan, Wood's bandmate in The Faces, saxophone-player Mel Collins, and harmonica-player Sugar Blue – discovered busking on the Paris métro – made Miss You in particular sound brighter than ever.

Amongst many eagerly-awaited extras, the Super-Deluxe edition of Some Girls will include a stunning, previously unseen Helmut Newton photo session from 1978, an essay by esteemed author and journalist Anthony DeCurtis putting the album in its cultural context, and a 7” single of Beast Of Burden/When The Whip Comes Down in its banned sleeve.

Thirty-three years on from its original release, the re-mastered, expanded, Super-Deluxe, Deluxe and Digital editions of Some Girls show why the 1978 album has often been hailed as the equal of Exile On Main Street. Some Girls is both a time capsule and a timeless listen. It features the band at their tightest and toughest, at their most vibrant and vital. It's an all-killer, no-filler, must-have album. It still packs a punch.

SOME GIRLS - now bigger, brighter and better than ever.

Reissue and movie...a bountiful Stonesgiving.

I don't think "Live in Texas" will be the third CD, it must be something like "The Making of Some Girls", "Live in Texas" is being released separately

The DVD being the third disc would render the separate 'Live in Texas' DVD obsolete.  Plus, there'd have to be a blu-ray alternative for the 3rd disc.

Could be the audio CD of the Fort Worth show that will be on the deluxe Live In Texas blu ray/DVD I suppose.

Ft. Worth CD negs sales of the 'Live In Texas' Blu-ray/DVD +.

SNL footage would be a nice lagniappe...

THAT made my day!
And if they include the SNL appearance that would be double bonus.  I can relive the instant I found out about the Stones.

that pic is the super deluxe... is see the 45 single of BoB... so, there's def. 3 cd's/dvd's? maybe super dlx will have the videos? who knows... or audio of some more stuff, they have said, more will be told later... with exile we had those tracks we knew of they added vocals, then the tracks we had no idea existed... who knows, what they have, we don't know about, making our speculation fun, but so random... if they cram alot onto the super dlx, i will get it... as long the the price tag isn't unreasonable... the real bummer is... there's no vinly LP in the super dlx... this is where they drop the ball... a great vinyl mastering, of audiophile standards, is what the super needs... nice to see the other stuff...
