Stones In Top Form On ‘Some Girls’

http://goo.gl/aAjHJ

October 24, 2011
By Scott Smith

A claim that The Rolling Stones were every bit as great in 1978 as they were in 1972 might be considered blasphemy in some corners of the rock ’n’ roll world.

Most hard-core fans politely nod at the contributions of Stones’ guitarist Ron Wood these days while pledging their longtime allegiance to the group’s 1969-1974 era, a time when technically great guitarist Mick Taylor was in the rowdy fold.

However, the recent big-screen viewing of “The Rolling Stones: Some Girls — Live in Texas 1978” at Fayetteville’s Razorback Cinema concert film begs some serious re-evaluation. Yes, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers played nearly flawlessly on the “Ladies and Gentlemen ... The Rolling Stones” DVD shot on the 1972 tour, but they seem musically meaner throughout the “Some Girls” film, with Mick Jagger morphing from a street-fighting man into a punk-loving frontman. Even drummer Charlie Watts, the most laid-back Stone, bashes away at his drums — watch how aggressively he strikes his cymbals and tom-tom, resulting in his greatest filmed performance yet.

Filmed in Fort Worth, Texas, and set to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 21, “Some Girls — Live in Texas ’78” also showcases six-string outlaw Keith Richards in near-top condition. Allegedly free of his decade-long heroin habit, Richards slashes away at his Telecaster as musical director, and his smoker’s cough of a singing voice is the perfect fit for the evening’s rapid-fire take of “Happy.”

Standing statuesque along with Jagger, Richards, Watts and Wood is bassist Bill Wyman, who, despite having two injured fingers taped together, rustles up some low-end fun on a prancing reading of “Tumblin’ Dice” and then-new tracks “When the Whip Comes Down,” “Beast of Burden,” “Miss You,” “Respectable,” “Shattered.” One flaw in the film is there’s not enough screen time given to Watts, Wyman and touring keyboardists Ian McLagan (ex-Faces) and Ian Stewart, and at times, Jagger’s playful, on-stage bullying of Wood grows a tad stale as the set list moves forward.

Although the “Some Girls” document lacks the epic-sized flashiness of the group’s “Let’s Spend the Night Together” concert movie from 1981, it packs much more of a bruising punch. It acts as a fantastic snapshot of The Rolling Stones defiantly staking their territory as a tornado of punk rock, rap and disco threatens to engulf them.

In the very beginning of the movie when MICK gives the interview, it looks like MICK has had some Botox injections in his face. I'm almost sure of it. His face looks smoother and less facial expression, not my old MICK, and I am kinda upset because MICK was probably persuaded by L'Wren to do it! She hangs out with the Hollywood crowd and they all get Botox on a regular basis. The good news is that it wears off, so I hope he stops botoxing his amazing 'normal' face, which has charactor, and I like his natural wrinkled face so much more than the fake Botox look. Who else noticed this?

Wonder if the 78 tour was world wide, that it would of affected the 81-82 tours but then they would of toured maybe in 85-86.

I think '85-'86 was a lost cause!

'78 wasnt even a full American tour when you think about it. Just over six weeks, about 25 shows, all one night stands (apart from Anaheim), a random mix of theatres, arenas and stadiums with no real concern about whether it met ticket demand or not (the only New York show was in a theatre that held just over 3,000 people).

From what I remember, it was thrown together pretty quickly too. All very rock n roll and crazy when you think about it, and the last tour they did in the 'pre-sponsorship' days.  Just going out and playing nearly all of the songs off their new album one after the other, and if people didnt like it - tough titty.

Groovy times.

I wish the Stones would still play nearly the entire album when they tour behind new releases like they did back then. It shows a great deal of faith in their own material, but I understand it's tough to charge 500 bucks a seat to hear a new album and not the hits.

Although it hasn't stopped U2 from playing huge chunks of material from their new albums.  I seem to recall they opened shows with several new songs somewhere back in the late 90's.

Doesn't have to be either/or when it comes to hits and new stuff. The problem, as they've gotten older, has been the length of shows.

At the end of the last tour, they were playing 18 or 19 songs for less than two hours. You need that extra half-hour or so to find the right balance. I think even we hardcore fans want to hear at least some of the warhorses, not to mention the obscure stuff. I just don't think it can be done in a satisfying way in less than two hours.

U2 still do that.

The way round it is simple. Dont charge 500 bucks for a ticket. When you do that, the expectation levels of the audience goes sky high and their sense that you owe them something is out of hand.  Effectively, the band loses control of their own show.

The Stones shouldnt feel obliged to be a jukebox for anyone. They're far far better than that. If by this stage, ticket buyers cant grasp that they have more than 12-15 songs in their back catalogue, thats their problem. It shouldnt be the band's.

And if the songs are good enough - and they are! - then it shouldnt be an issue. Maybe the lazy sods in question might actually buy the records.

They never shoved a new album down their audience's throats before or since like they did in 1978.  Pretty much half the show consisted of songs released that month.

Is it a coincidence that 'Some Girls' was their most successful record at the time, even though it was a relatively short tour? I don't think so.

Hopefully on their next tour, they'll find a way to claim their own music back and do what the hell they want. They've earned that right.
