Some Girls -- Live In Texas '78

Release date: 22 November 2011

...

Blu-ray/Blu-ray + CD/DVD/DVD + CD

The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that year’s “Some Girls” album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the “Some Girls” album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July the album had hit the No.1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a “back to basics” approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront and little or no elaborate staging.  Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on 18 July 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with the Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from “Some Girls” are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums. Originally shot on 16mm film, the footage has been carefully restored and the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes. This is undeniably the Rolling Stones at the peak of their form.

Tracklist:
01. Let It Rock
02. All Down The Line
03. Honky Tonk Women
04. Star Star
05. When The Whip Comes Down
06. Beast Of Burden
07. Miss You
08. Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)
09. Shattered
10. Respectable
11. Far Away Eyes
12. Love In Vain
13. Tumbling Dice
14. Happy
15. Sweet Little Sixteen
16. Brown Sugar
17. Jumpin’ Jack Flash

Bonus Features:
Newly filmed interview with Mick Jagger.
Additional bonus features to be confirmed.

Fucking great. And a two-disc set to boot.

Only the first 6 songs have ever circulated on video. And even then, in less than pristine quality. The show was filmed for a concert movie which was then never released.

The audio of the full show has, of course, been in circulation on discs 1 & 2 of 'Handsome Girls' since around 1994 or so.

Its the release I expected to come out as part of the Some Girls reissue package, but its a very welcome one. Eagle Rock said they planned to put out two archive releases per year - they havent quite held to that 100%, but its still pretty good.

I think this somewhat vindicates the recent rumours going around that the expanded Some Girls deluxe release would be available before Christmas.

You're all in for a treat - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5dp48jHPjw&feature=related

Wait a minute - 1 DVD & CD?

Does that mean theyre releasing an audio CD version of the show too?

(which may be a bit awkward as its 5 minutes too long for a single disc...)

Great news!  I've had Handsome Girls for a while now and love it!  Now I'll have the video too.

Another good reason to buy that larger TV I've been wanting.

Cant imagine so, Roger.

UMG would have the exclusive rights to that. It'll be a separate release - and its probably likely to attract more attention (and sales) than a DVD.

There might conceivably be a scenario where you can buy both items together as some kind of expensive deluxe package, but nowhere on this announcement does it mention a 'CD only' option - and UMG will most certainly put out an audio-only release.

great news... hope a dlx SG is still going to happen. I'm glad the DVD of the tour won't be attached to a SG dlx ed. I do wonder as Gazza mentioned, what will be going on the CD, since the entire show might not fit... but there was aa bit of time between songs... and didn't they already do overdubs and edit of the KBFH tapes that made up the bootlegs? I guess this and many other questions will be answered on our next episode!

BTW, this will be the first official release of that tour (well... the "Sucking in the 70s" version on "When the tits come down" is the only one, it comes from the 6th July 1978 show at the Masonic Hall in Detroit)

Oh man I can't wait for this!
But, the question is will the video be of better quality than the current vids being circulated?
And, is this release just a tease as to what we can expect in the lead up to the SG deluxe release?
My guess is that we will see more stuff from the vaults soon!
As far as I can tell, it's all they've got left.

So, I say, release the hounds!
Up till now we've gotten very little, save the Exile reissue, and Ya Ya's Deluxe.
Could be a precursor of the 50 anniversary tour!
Kicking off a limited engagement tour behind some great nuggets from the vaults makes sense.
Stones fans will certainly be clamoring for a tour more so than a new album I'd wager.

With the release of the vault stuff they are honoring the latest contract.
I do wonder if any new music is even in their agenda?
The thought of Mick and Keef writing together again seems far fetched to me.
Hell, Mick hasn't the time to deal with Keith right now anyway with the Super Heavy release.

Though I'm sure we'd all love the though of a new disk, forget it.
Even if they wanted to put out a new disk, there's no time before their 50th anniversary.
Everyone that I talk to about the Stones (save for RO'ers) couldn't even name any of the last 3 disks!
Time to face that most horrible of thoughts-A day without the Stones is fast approaching.
Hell, I hate to think like that, but hey, it is what it is.

Yes.

The KBFH 'Memphis' broadcast (which is actually just 2 songs from Memphis, plus songs from Detroit and Houston) would fit neatly on to one disc (obviously, 'Starfucker' wasnt broadcast).

Its also an even better collection of performances than the Fort Worth gig.

It'd be sweet if the CD consists of an entirely different set of songs than the DVD.

The circulating videos of Fort Worth are about 3rd generation at best. And the clip I posted has even had the sound synched from 'Handsome Girls'. I cant imagine theyd even consider putting out a DVD/blu ray of the gig thats in similar quality.

There was meant to be a concert movie from 1978 - and it was filmed in Fort Worth. So there SHOULD be a master of it in their vaults.

I think we're looking at another tie-in in the way that 'Ladies & Gents' and 'Stones in Exile' were put out as companion releases to the Exile reissue.

Eagle Rock seem to be committed to a long-term series of archive DVD/blu ray releases from the Stones' vaults, so it appears that in the last two years or so the band have finally accepted that their past is actually their long-term future.  The resounding commercial success of the Exile reissue certainly hasnt done any harm.

There will be a greatest hits package in 2012. Thats definitely in UMG's short-term plans. So, they probably dont NEED to make a new studio album if they choose to tour next year, although it would certainly be a welcome bonus.

My KBFH tape is from Lexington, KY, it's a second generation cassette with the first recorded from the radio broadcast it has a very good quality but it's not an official release
