I think Lennon was looking at the broader picture when he made the comment about there being 'nothing' before Elvis. I think he was looking at the broader picture. Elvis was certainly the first phenomenon of popular music and his impact and importance, both musically and culturally, is undeniable. I think Lennon's quote was quite on the mark, personally.

Agreed. Others were great; Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Bo Didley, Gene Vincent, but Elvis was the first phenomenon of Rock.

Elvis put Rock & Roll on the map, unfortunately because of the race issue in the 50's & 60's, blacks were not recognized until white people like Elvis, Beatles & Stones did their music as far as the mainstream goes, Mick has said he was shocked by the racism in the states when they first went over, they had it in England but never as much as the U.S.

Yes, I wish a couple of those FREAKS in the Memphis Mafia would have lost Elvis' "special kit" they carried for him - might be alive today.  Or maybe if Col Tom been struck dead earlier...

Anyway, it was fun to listen to.  He was obviously loaded when delivering his diatribe.  Only not on heroin.  Great voice whether singing or chewing someone out.  You tell 'em Elvis.

Just found this in my inbox, thanks to Elmo Lewis from IORR.

Pretty sharp pencil, huh?

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef
