I am totally shocked--although I don't know why. I have been watching the 1963 version of "Lord Of The Flies" on TV, and that is such a weird movie/book. And then, I come here and see this....Sad Just surreal. She really had the talent. She just couldn't control her life. Sad

Damn! It actually felt like a surprise to me - I would have expected that last year, but she seemed to be doing better... She wasn't so often seen outside her house door throwing things, wounds all over, losing weight. I thought she'd eventually clean up her act and pull it together.

Death is always death, but when it's so pointless... What can I say! Hope she's in a plane of existence where she's finally feeling better with herself.
Sadness.

Troubled soul singer Amy Winehouse, who had been attempting a comeback after a few years battling drug and alcohol addiction, has been found dead in her London home, her record company confirmed Saturday.

Her record label Universal confirmed the 27-year-old singer's death in a statement Saturday, saying the company's staff were "deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer."

"Our prayers go out to Amy's family, friends and fans at this difficult time," the label said.

London police issued a statement Saturday saying an unnamed 27-year-old female had been pronounced dead at the scene at a home in north London.

"Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained," said Metropolitan Police.

The size of Winehouse's appeal was reflected in the extraordinary range of people paying tribute as they heard the news, from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who posted "such a waste, raw talent" on Twitter to Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, who said he was dedicating Saturday's reunion performance of his band The Faces to Winehouse.

'I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent has come to such an early end.'—Tony Bennett

"It's a very sad loss of a very good friend I spent many great times with," said Wood on Saturday.

Tony Bennett, who recorded the pop standard Body And Soul with Winehouse at Abbey Road Studios in London in March for an upcoming duets album, called her "an artist of immense proportions."

"She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist and I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent has come to such an early end," he said.

Soon after the news broke, Canadian rocker Bryan Adams took to Twitter to lament the loss of his friend.

"Dear Amy, you will be missed forever," he wrote. "All my love, RIP, Bryan."

Adams had done his part to try to help Winehouse. In 2007, he reportedly invited Winehouse to spend Christmas at his Caribbean villa on the private island of Mustique, where she could recuperate away from the spotlight.
Erratic performances forced tour cancellation

Winehouse rose to fame in 2006 with the success of her sophomore album Back to Black, which featured the smash hit song Rehab. In 2008, she won five Grammy Awards — including best new artist and record of the year — but her ongoing struggles with substance abuse, erratic onstage behaviour, legal battles and other personal problems overshadowed her musical achievements.

Her death comes after a recent performance sparked questions over the singer's health and rumours Winehouse had suffered a relapse into drug and alcohol abuse.

The singer showed up nearly an hour late for a concert in June at Belgrade's Kalemegdan Park and disappointed the crowd of approximately 20,000 by stumbling about, mumbling through her songs and occasionally exiting the stage — leaving her bewildered band and backup singers performing in her place.

The concert was to be the first of a 12-date tour, which was cancelled soon after.

Though she was flooded with a variety of musical accolades over the years, the performer made headlines in Britain and worldwide for her increasingly erratic behaviour, disheveled appearance, poor performance at recent concerts and substance abuse problem.

Winehouse also had a tumultuous marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil, whom she married in 2007. They had many public spats, which often turned violent. The couple divorced in 2009.

Thats precisely why it was such a shock to me too. I know she's had a few 'moments' lately, but it was nothing on the scale of 2007-08 when it really did seem that her demise was imminent, she was self-harming and looked skeletal. In the last year or so she'd put on a bit of weight, was recording again and I really did begin to think that it was a story that was going to have a happy ending.

This was her last week in London. Certainly looked relatively healthy.

...

Never took class A drugs until she met that piece of shit that she married, either. I hope he's proud of himself today.

While I can't classify her as a talent with so many of the "Rock Gods" who died at 27 (after all she was mostly a singer- though I will say she was closer to Joplin in that way and my how fitting they took the same paths to destruction), it is still a terrible waste of talent. Never nice to see anyone die mind you, but especially a good one like Amy. The fact she was clean recently and died tells me perhaps she thought she could take a drug again in a quantity she had done them before in. But that will get someone who's weened themselves off it. Keef in his book said that was the thing that got most junkies, and what killed Gram Parsons (oh yeah, he was 27 too). Their tolerance gets weakened. I just hope slime like her husband and her management and record company don't start cashing in by digging through her vaults or releasing a hit collection. That would stink of classless greed. Let her fans mourn in their own way, let people go back through her old records instead of making her death an excuse to make money. And let not a cent of the possible spike in her music's popularity go to that waste of space Blake Fielder "Not So"-Civil.

Actually, there is a "26" club too, and Gram Parsons is a member of that one.

Also Nick Drake and Otis Redding....

Of course, there are some who died at 25 and quite a few who died at 28.

Any way you look at it, any of those clubs are not ones anyone wants to belong to. Sad

No kidding... I don't know about alot of you, but i barely made it into my 30's... I was 125 lbs, strung out to shit and desperate between 26 and 28 yrs old... a friend of mine showed my a pic from when I was 24, and I got skinnier and scarier looking.... and yea, the cutoffs and shorts are lame ass fashion... no excuse... it was what you wear in a dentist chair in your apartment when you're getting a tattoo in 1990...

I was thiking about that today as well Sioux. A lot of fuss made about the "27"club. But I was wondering if someone looked back at history if their might not be the same tragic results at different ages. Though I suppose it doesn't really matter. Gone too soon...is still gone too soon. Cry

Now we have to listen to the fucking media's ignorance, exaggerations, one-off stories, dramatic instances, inaccuracies, and lies about drug use.  What you will not hear is that there is a certain fortitude, probably genetic, to successful hard core drug use, soft core drug use, or any drug use  Some (<<<<46 male, conservative, 163 IQ, endowed, honky) have it, some don't.  Somewhat more accurately (although not always so), some have it when they are relatively young and are sensible enough to realize its waning when they get relatively older.  Amy Winehouse didn't have any of it, at all, ever, from what I can tell.  A cannabis joint could have killed her (although it was probably cocaine).  That is the sad part of this, on many levels, she never had a chance from the day she first got high.  She couldn't handle drugs in the slightest.

Also Nick Drake and Otis Redding....

Of course, there are some who died at 25 and quite a few who died at 28.

Any way you look at it, any of those clubs are not ones anyone wants to belong to. Sad

I was thiking about that today as well Sioux. A lot of fuss made about the "27"club. But I was wondering if someone looked back at history if their might not be the same tragic results at different ages. Though I suppose it doesn't really matter. Gone too soon...is still gone too soon. Cry

I totally agree. So many of our rock stars have died in their 50's and 60's as well. It seems that if they reach the 70 year old mark, they live a full life....

Pretty much. She was one of those who completely let it engulf her and she eventually succumbed to it we presume. Keith is a #1 example of how someone can survive and succeed despite heavy drug use. Amy sadly is on the other end of that spectrum. She's like ex-Neil Young confidante and Crazy Horse member Danny Whitten. Within 3 years of becoming a junkie, he was gone. Could not handle it whatsoever. Took Amy about 5 or 6 years but she eventually flamed out too. And yet Ozzie Osbourne still walks the Earth.

Ronnie Wood dedicated yesterday's gig by The Faces to Amy, he did the same with his Absolute Radio programme

From lefty's post at The Faces thread

Tonight is for Amy. We lost a very special girl, we are going to pay tribute to her.

- Ronnie Wood

i wouldn't say Keith was successful at drinking and drugging. He may have escaped death and long prison sentences... but after reading his book, if you really look at what he did, to his friends and family around him, and put into context, not that it's Keith our fave guitarist or read it from his narcisistic perspective. Keith did some really, really lame shit. He was a shitty Dad to Marlon, a bad husband and lover to many. He often was violent or argumentative to people unprovoked. Let's be real, when you look at people who act like this, without the glam or their view of it, they are really just lousy drunks and druggies. IMO, he was far from exempt or succesful, just lucky. He still, as we know, is a pretty sharp tongued prick too, He has succeeed despite these things, but that doesn't mean many people haven't been hurt and damaged by his actions along the way.

It begins already. There'll probably be greatest hits and demos and live stuff put out too.
According to Amy herself, the stuff recorded for the third album is similar to Back To Black and is very "jukebox" I've heard that she was working with or planned to work with ?uestlove. Any work released could be interesting, despite being unfinished. I'm just hoping we don't get piles of tacky cash-ins.

Would anyone buy the third album if it's released in some form?

I'm watching Entertainment Tonight in the U.S. right now---they will soon have a report about the '27" club, and they actually showed footage of Brian Jones. He is usually left out of the "list" of rememberees, and it always makes me just want him to be remembered....not necessarily for being the first member of the club from the modern era, but for the musician and visionary he was......so, at least, it looks like they will get it right tonight.

On the news reports of Amy's death that I have heard the 27 thing has been referred to a lot. The well known list is rattled off. Jimi,Morrison, Joplin and Cobain are referred to by name only. Brian has been included but in nearly all cases he is referred to as "Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones".

The point being that if the qualifier "of the Rolling Stones" was not added most people wouldn't know who the hell he was. Brian has just about become as arcane and esoteric (and forgotten) as Robert Johnson (who, unsurprisingly, has not been mentioned at all).

All I read here and on Tell Me is of her excessive drug-use and how this could be a factor in her sad demise. Whilst this may well be true, she was also raging piss-head and IMO, it could quite easily have been the alcohol that caused the death. Tragic.

From one news report, she was drinking heavily & had a seizure, they didn't find no drugs in her place, everybody thinks drugs are bad, well, booze can be just as bad.

There are a ton of rock musicians who died at 27....even Wikipedia has a pretty extensive list...

Robert Johnson was the first....Brian was the first of the "modern era".

I think the fascination with those who died at 27 was, at first, because Brian, Jimi, Janis, and Jim died within 2 years of each other. I remember comments as early as when Hendrix died---that he and Brian had been friends, and how weird it was that they both died at 27. And then Janis followed about 2 weeks later, and it started to become creepy. Morrison died 2 years to the day that Brian did, and then there was no doubt that "27" was some kind of cursed age among rock stars...Sad

‘Third album’ would triple Winehouse estate to £18m

Alexi Mostrous
Last updated July 26 2011 12:01AM

Amy Winehouse’s unfinished final record would triple her estate’s value to £18 million if released, industry experts have told The Times.

Universal, the singer’s record company, is in line for an even greater payout after a leap in demand for her albums.

Back to Black, Winehouse’s second record, has shot to the top of the Apple iTunes charts in 14 countries. The album is expected to top the official UK charts on Sunday after selling more than 10,000 this week. “Record stores don’t have a huge amount of stock,” an HMV spokesman said. “We’ve nearly sold through what we’ve got.”

If Back to Black sells one million extra copies, Winehouse’s estate would receive about just over £2 million, according to music industry experts said. An established artist who also writes her own music would expect to receive about £2.30 for every £9 album sold.

While distributors such as HMV or Apple would typically receive roughly £2, the lion’s share - just over £4 for each album after payments to music publishers- would go to the record label.

Winehouse’s estate would also receive an additional fee of about £17 a minute when her music is played on the national radio — and more if licensed to films or advertisements.

The surge in demand mirrors the acceleration of sales in 2009 after Michael Jackson died. His estate generated more than $310 million (£190 million) from album sales and spin-offs.

Sources close to Winehouse said “a lot of material was available” for a third album.

Dr Alice Enders, of Enders Analysis said: “A lot of people will listen to her who haven’t before, but there’s a lot of competition from female vocalists, who weren’t around in her heyday.”

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/arts/music/article3105088.ece

(There was a documentary on her on Channel 4 last night which had an interview with her dad from a couple of years ago saying that there was a huge amount of 'brilliant' material that she'd recorded a few years ago but which she'd discarded saying she'd never use it as she'd 'moved on' and wasnt interested in living in the past).

How nice and conveniant is it that the record company stands to make a few penny's on this. Probably the same record company that kept pushing her out on stage insisting she was fine. Their should be laws that record companies cannot profit from deceased recording artists for at least a certain amount of time....Otherwise known as the vulture law.

I think the world has more pressing problems than this, but it is rather distasteful that they're already talking about opening the "Winehouse vaults."  you made a grown man cry

??

It doesnt say anywhere in that article that her record company are planning to cash in by releasing her third album.

'Industry insiders' are merely speculating that if it DID come out, it would be a big seller.

In any event, such a record is a long way from being finished at present.

As for 'making a few pennies'. It stands to sense. Recently deceased artists tend to see their record sales rocket in the short term. The only people responsible for that are the members of the public who suddenly realise that they were fans after all and who seem to feel its part of some grieving process to buy their albums. The artist's estate and record company (not to mention the taxman) always do pretty well out of it.

Hadley Freeman

guardian.co.uk,

'What have we learned from the death of Amy Winehouse?" asked the hapless MSNBC news anchor. As this question was posed on Sunday morning when nothing was yet known about Winehouse's death other than the sad fact of it, the only answer to this question was, well, we seem to have learned that celebrities die.

Yet even though this is proved many times every year, certain elements of the media still get the reporting of these deaths very badly wrong. Which is remarkable, considering how eagerly some tabloid newspapers and websites wish for certain celebrities – Winehouse very much included – to die, judging by their tendency to harass them and laugh at them to a degree that would make a psychotic playground bully blush.

There is nothing a tabloid likes more than a predictable story arc, and by "predictable" I mean the one that they think would sell the most copies of their publication. Hence the ongoing obsession with the Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie trifecta, and the eternal insinuation in all stories about them that, one day, Brad'n'Jen will reunite. (SPOILER ALERT: They won't.) Jude Law and Sienna Miller played the same part in the UK until they did reunite and promptly broke up again, going disobediently off the Happily Ever After script that the weekly gossip magazines had mapped out for them. Didn't they know they were supposed to stay together for ever, if only so we could admire Sienna's wedding dress and see Jude married off before all of his hair disappears?

Winehouse, was, for a while, the female counterpart to Pete Doherty: the celebrity the British tabloids trailed around London (mysteriously, these tabloids always seemed to know where they'd be), cackling with glee at, simultaneously, their wild life ("Caner of the year!") and their visible decline. To read tabloid journalists berating the drug dealers for their part in Winehouse's death is to hear the sound of a pot calling the kettle, if not black exactly, then certainly kitchen-based.

But Doherty and Winehouse both seemed to go off-script by daring to survive, if not quite being fully alive. Until this weekend, when Winehouse at last gave the media a collective orgasm of prurient crocodile tears by dying. At last we can wheel out those pre-written columns as we photograph her body being wheeled out of her house!

Which returns us to the only thing to learn from Winehouse's far-too-early death: celebrities die and many people appear at a loss as to how to cover such events. So here is a handy guide about what not to do when a celebrity you've been tormenting for years dies.

1. Don't print unproven conjectures about how they died.

A certain downmarket British tabloid * had two theories about Winehouse's death on its front page on Sunday, one claiming she "drank herself to death" and the other claiming she'd bought a buffet of drugs the night before. Now, I know you want to give your readers voyeuristic if not necessarily factually based thrills but make sure your claims don't contradict each other, at least not on the front of your website.

2. Don't use their corpse to bang your own drum.

Melanie Phillips waited a whole 48 hours before using Winehouse's death to launch into her favourite subject: "Britain has degenerated." But the prize goes to the Huffington Post with its article, "Amy Winehouse's Untimely Death is a Wake Up Call for Small Business Owners." Yes, and what does it tell us about the importance of organic vegetables? Stay classy, Arianna.

3. Don't use it to promote yourself.

More for fellow celebrities, this. U2 dedicated Stuck in a Moment to Winehouse, a gesture that would be more touching if (a) Bono hadn't already claimed it was for Michael Hutchence (one dead singer is the same as the next, eh?) and (b) if Winehouse hadn't famously told Bono to shut up at an awards ceremony and therefore, presumably was not a U2 fan. As for you, MIA, releasing a song called 27 pegged to Winehouse's death makes the time you claimed Gaddafi was "one of my style icons" look relatively tasteful.

4. And speaking of 27, enough about 27.

Yes, Winehouse died at 27. And so did some other celebrities! But how many died in the month of March? Or at 10:19pm? This 27 Club nonsense awkwardly hoiks separate individuals together and insinuates that their deaths are part of a great rock'n'roll tradition.

5. And speaking of tradition, enough of the "death foretold" nonsense.

Yes, Winehouse had her troubles but there was nothing "inevitable" about her or anyone's tragically premature death. I interviewed her in 2004 and she was funny, confident and healthy. I next saw her three years later at Benicassim, emaciated, disoriented and literally falling down the steps of an outside toilet. That was not "foretold". That was shocking.

6. Don't print photos or details that you gleaned through possibly distasteful means.

It would be very interesting to know how certain tabloids attained such detailed knowledge of Winehouse's alleged final drug purchase *, say, or how they always knew where to find her to take photos of her.

7. No puns, please.

It is a de rigueur part of covering the death of a celebrity – you gotta pun on the title of one of their songs or films, right? Actually, you don't. The New York Post's "They Tried to Make Her Go To Rehab, She Said No No No" was as predictable as it was stupid. But it was an American breakfast TV show that really, hopefully, took this schtick to its nadir, punning, sorta, on Winehouse's song title You Know I'm No Good to You Know I'm Dead.

I'm sure we're all looking forward to the Back to Black headlines following her funeral.

* The Daily Mail - no fucking surprise there.

Exclusive: Lady Gaga Says 'Amy Winehouse Deserved Better'
Both singers will appear on Tony Bennett's forthcoming 'Duets II' album

Lady Gaga was "really devastated" to learn of Amy Winehouse's death on July 23rd, she told Rolling Stone on Sunday while taking a break from recording a jazz duet of "The Lady is a Tramp" with Tony Bennett at a New York studio.

"It really affected me quite deeply," she said. "Isn’t it strange to say ‘She is,’ and now I have to say ‘She was?’ I’m just really glad that we got to admire her and tell her how much we loved her when she was alive. I hope she knows now in Heaven, where she is, how much we all loved her."

Bennett was the last to record with Winehouse, a duet of the 1930 classic "Body and Soul" in March at Abbey Road Studios in London. It will appear on his upcoming Duets II LP, out September 20th. "Everybody was apprehensive as to how it was going to go," he said. "But she was really the best of all the young artists that I met in the current scene in the last 10 or 15 years. She was really singing true jazz. It’s just too tragic. I wanted to talk to her and tell her that if she doesn’t stop she’s going to die. I wanted to talk her out of the drugs, but unfortunately I never had a chance to talk to her."

As she continued talking, Gaga's eyes welled up. "I’m a huge fan," she said. "She was my only hope when I was up and coming. Nobody knew who I was and I had no fans, no record label and everybody, when they met me, said I wasn’t pretty enough or that my voice was too low or strange. They had nowhere to put me. And then I saw her in Rolling Stone and I saw her live. I just remember thinking ‘Well, they found somewhere to put Amy…’"

Gaga added: "She’s really special.  She just gave me a lot of hope and she deserved a lot better than what people gave her. And I hope that the world learns a lesson from this. I really hope they do. Because it’s not her lesson to learn – it’s the world’s."

A coroner has ruled that Amy Winehouse died as the unintended result of drinking too much alcohol. According to pathology reports, Winehouse had consumed a "very large quantity of alcohol" and was more than five times over the legal drunk-driving limit in Britain at the time of her death. As a result, her passing has been ruled a "death by misadventure."

Winehouse, who struggled with alcoholism and drug abuse for much of her adult life, was found dead at her home in London on July 23rd. She was 27 years old.

"death by misadventure."

Liquor was a factor for all of the '27 club'. It can kill you in massive quantities and/or mixed with drugs. No mention of drugs for Amy? She didnt want to go to rehab, but maybe it would of saved her if she did. I feel sorry that her friends and family just let her do what she wanted and didnt insist on rehab. In hindsight I bet they saw it comong and wished they did an intervention for her. I feel sad when I read this thread. Poor troubled Amy. RIP

How people die from drinking

As the news that Amy Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning traveled around the world Wednesday, some were shocked to hear exactly how much alcohol the late singer had in her system at the time of her death. According to a pathologist who testified during the inquest, Winehouse's blood-alcohol level was .416 when she died, more than five times the legal limit for driving. In both the United States and Britain, the legal limit to drive is .08.

Alcohol poisoning is caused by drinking a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time. It is not always fatal; depending on the person and the amount of alcohol consumed, alcohol poisoning may cause brain damage, liver damage, vomiting, nausea, or unconsciousness. Women are slightly more susceptible to alcohol poisoning than men, due to a lesser amount of fluid in their bodies. A person's age, weight, previous alcohol and drug experience, and the type of alcohol being consumed are all factors that may increase a person's chance for developing alcohol poisoning.

"You can drink alcohol faster than you can remove it from your body and that's when your blood-alcohol level goes up," says Robert Pandina, Ph.D., and the director of the Center for Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University.

According to the Mayo Clinic, it takes the body roughly one hour to metabolize a single drink but the definition of what constitutes a drink changes depending on the alcohol. A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. That means that if Winehouse had been drinking hard liquor before she died it would have taken her body much longer to metabolize that than if she had consumed the same quantity of beer or wine. It's worth noting that police searching Winehouse's home reported finding three empty vodka bottles but it's not known if that's what Winehouse drank.

"If you keep drinking alcohol, it's not going to get metabolized any faster just because you've consumed more of it," explains Pandina. "Metabolism happens at a fixed rate until all the alcohol is processed."

Pandina calculates that a woman weighing approximately 110 pounds would have to drink between 12 and 13 ounces of 80-proof liquor in an hour to reach a blood-alcohol level of 0.40.

"It's still a lot but it's far less than people may imagine," says Pandina.

But the effects of alcohol poisoning can be felt long before a person reaches that point. A person may need medical attention with a blood-alcohol level under 0.2. Vital functions may start to shut down before someone reaches 0.25. Death is possible with a blood-alcohol level of 0.3. And that's without prior liver damage from previous alcohol or drug use. A person with a damaged liver is at higher risk for catastrophic or fatal alcohol poisoning because his or her liver cannot effectively metabolize the alcohol.

"The message is very simply when you know someone has been drinking and drinking heavily, don't wait," says Pandina. "It's quite possible to revive individuals even at very high alcohol levels and keep them from having catastrophic effects."

"Call the rescue squad, get them on oxygen, get them to the hospital so they can be properly treated."

Interesting info, EG. I know they said there were no drugs found in her system, and that she had been off the bottle for a few weeks. She drank a lot--and it was the first time in awhile. Sad

Are you sure only 12 or 13 ounces of liquor can kill you? I dont believe it's only that little of an amount.  When I was a bartender I saw some people can put down 12 to 15 drinks in a night, no problem. Lots of people drink that much. I figured she had to consume an entire 1 liter bottle to make it enough to kill her, or 2, or 3. Ive actually 2 seen people knock off a large bottle and didnt even have a hangover the next day, because they were so used to drinking alot. So I wonder how much liquor Amy was capable of drinking, but I bet it was way more than 12 or 13 oz.

I did hear that there were Vodka bottles {plural--don't know how many} scattered about the place....I'm thinking that maybe that much alcohol, after weeks of abstinence, might have geen a factor. And this seems to be more of a problem with women--and small ones especially. Just speculating...

I think the numbers in that article are based on the MINIMUM amount of alcohol for a person whose body cannot metabolize alcohol effectively.

Everyone is different.

The article said per hour, not per night. Hopefully you've never seen someone drink 15 drinks/shots in an hour? On second thought, that's equivalent to chugging a pint of vodka which I've seen people do. Crazy.

Thanks Edith Grove for that article, Alcoholics have a very high tolerance for alcohol, it's like overdosing on a drug all the time, only we don't see it that way because Alcohol is legal, & socially acceptable, how many people die from a accident involving alcohol only alcohol isn't the reason why? if the person wasn't drinking, that would have never happened in a lot of cases, people do things when their drinking that they would call insane sober.

I'll admitt it!  I like to drink!

It's sad, because my father has battled with alcoholism all his life.  He sobers up enough to work a few months.  Save a little money.  And, then, he goes on these drinking binges that last months!

As a child, I swore I would never drink.  It wasn't until I went to college and got influenced by other people in the dorms, that I started to drink.

The truth is alcohol makes me happy and relaxed.  Of course, I know my limit, 3 beers or one shot of hard liquor.  Just enough to give me a slight buzz.  I only drink on the weekends. I never drink when I am on my period. (Advil and alcohol are a bad combination.)

New Amy Album

Today it’s been announced that on the 5th December, “Lioness: Hidden Treasures“, the third album from Amy Winehouse, without question one of the most talented, original, and best loved artists to emerge in popular music for decades, will be released through Island Records.
Following her tragic passing in July, some of the producers and musicians who worked closely with Amy Winehouse, among them Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi,  spent time listening over the many recordings that Amy had made, before, during, and after the release of “Frank” and “Back To Black”.  It was said by all who worked with Amy that she never sang or played a song the same way twice. It quickly became apparent to Salaam and Mark that they had a collection of songs that deserved to be heard, a collection of songs that were a fitting testament to Amy the artist and, as importantly, Amy their friend.
The 12 track collection features previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions of existing classics as well as a couple of brand new Amy compositions, and has been compiled by long-time musical partners Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson in close association with Amy’s family, management and record label Island Records. “Lioness : Hidden Treasures” proves a fitting tribute to the artist, the talent and the woman and serves as a reminder of Amy’s extraordinary powers as a songwriter, a singer and an interpreter of classics.
The full tracklisting is as follows:
“Our Day Will Come (Reggae Version)” – reggae re-working of classic 60’s doo wop song produced by Salaam Remi. Recorded May 2002.
“Between The Cheats” – new Amy composition recorded in London in May 2008 for potential inclusion on album three produced by Salaam Remi.
“Tears Dry” – originally written by Amy as a ballad, this is the original version she recorded in November 2005 in Miami with Salaam. The later uptempo version  appears on “Back To Black”.
“Wake Up Alone” – the first song recorded for the “Back To Black” sessions. This is the one-take demo recorded in March 2006 by Paul O’Duffy.
“Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” – Amy’s beautiful reading of the Carole King written Shirelles classic. Produced by Mark Ronson and featuring the Dap Kings with string arrangements by Chris Elliott who did all the strings for Mark’s tracks on “Back To Black”. Recorded in September 2004.
“Valerie” - one of Amy’s jukebox favourites. This is the original slower tempo version of the Mark Ronson produced post “Back To Black” single. Recorded in December 2006.
“Like Smoke” featuring NAS  – Amy and Nas became really good friends after Amy name checked the New York rapper on “Back To Black’s” “Me & Mr Jones”.  “Like Smoke” is finally Amy doing a song with one of her favourite artists. Produced by Salaam Remi. Recorded in May 2008.
“The Girl From Ipanema” – the first song the 18 year old Amy sang when she first went to Miami to record with Salaam. Salaam remarked that “the way she re-interpreted this bossa nova classic made me realise that I was dealing with a very special talent. Her approach to the song was so young and fresh, it really inspired the rest of our sessions.” Recorded in May 2002.
“Halftime” - Amy had talked to Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson of the Roots about working together. “Halftime” is a song that Amy and Salaam had worked on since the Frank sessions.  The result is beautiful. Recorded in August 2002.
“Best Friends” – “Frank” era live set opener produced by Salaam Remi. Probably the first song that early Amy fans would have heard live. Recorded in February 2003.
“Body & Soul” with Tony Bennett - cover of 30’s jazz standard with hero Tony Bennett. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios London in March 2011 and produced by Phil Ramone. Amy’s final studio recording.
“A Song For You” - heartbreaking and emotional version of the Leon Russell classic made famous by Donny Hathaway. Hathaway was Amy’s all-time favourite artist and the song was recorded in one take, just Amy and her guitar, at her home in London during the spring of 2009 as she battled her demons. Produced by Salaam Remi.

Sounds good.

An early take of 'Tears dry on their own' ? Cool. If they put out a boxed set with 60 takes of that song, I'd still probably be all over it.

Lookin' forward to hearin' her do 'Mr Hathaway''s song too.

Love Amy.

I was hoping that there would be more post-Back To Black stuff on there. About a year or two ago, record execs claimed that there was enough material for a new album and I thought that she had been recording in St.Lucia etc.

Maybe there will be - on a future release.

However, if something comes of it, the impression Ive got is that its something that would require a bit of work. I doubt the songs got much past the demo stage.

She was writing during that lengthy holiday in St Lucia a couple of years ago... dont think she was recording there, though.

Agreed - I struggle for superlatives to properly describe how much I like that song and how good I think it is

Look forward to hearing a slower take on it

The line about Amy never singing a song the same way twice reminded me they used to say the same thing about Billie Holiday.

That's certainly true about Billie. She was one of the all-time great vocalists. Tragic life story. I suppose Amy and her are similar in that sense. I was reading about a demo that exists of Amy siging "Ain't Nobody's Business" which Billie also famously covered. It's not on the Lioness album but it'll probably surface in some form in the next few years.

"Like Smoke" single http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xm425c_amy-winehouse-ft-nas-like-smoke_music from 2008.

Not bad, not great either, it ain't no "Rehab" - most recent recording on the upcoming album if I got it right.

I really like both tracks. I can't believe that Amy was 18 when she recorded "Our Day Will Come"
She was such a natural talent; jazz, soul, R&B and reggae. She could do it all and sound fantastic.

I like the other track too. Her voice was sounding different than it did in the other, more gravelly if that's a word but that change was already clear listening to Frank and Back To Black. That was a sort of bittersweet listen because there could have been so much more.....
