The Faces are playing the first of a handful of dates this weekend.
Genesis Publications posted this today:

The Faces Rehearse For Summer Tour

Genesis were incredibly fortunate to be invited along to the Faces' rehearsal yesterday (29th June) ahead of the band headlining the Cornbury Music Festival this Saturday, 2nd July. They blasted through Small Faces classics 'Tin Soldier' and 'All Or Nothing' as well as the classic cover of 'Maybe I'm Amazed'.

Mick Hucknall's the singer.
Check him out with Ronnie and Kenney on last week's "BBC Breakfast".

If they're half as good as they were last year, they'll still be 2x better than plenty of other acts...

I agree, check the youTube vids with Hucknall.  He more than holds his own on those tunes.  If Rod's not going to join the band so be it.

And I find this a lot more interesting that SuperHeavy.

Ronnie Wood brings son Jesse into the Faces lineup; band launches 2011 tour

-Carla Hay, Rolling Stones Examiner

The Faces kicked off their 2011 tour on July 2 at the Cornbury Festival in Oxfordshire, England. And the band's touring lineup now includes guitarist Ronnie Wood's eldest son, Jesse Wood, who is a second guitarist for the band. Backstage at the Cornbury Festival, Jesse posed for band photos with the Faces. And as these photos from the Faces rehearsals indicate, Jesse Wood has been rehearsing with the Faces for their 2011 tour.

Jesse Wood has performed with the Faces before, but it seems he has been officially welcomed to the fold as a regular member of the Faces touring lineup. In its February 2011 issue, Uncut magazine published an interview with recovering addict/alcoholic Ronnie saying that he was helping Jesse through rehab. Ronnie and Jesse Wood working together may be part of their recovery process.

The other members of the revamped Faces lineup are original Faces member Ian McLagan on keyboards, Simpy Red singer Mick Hucknall on lead vocals (since former Faces singer Rod Stewart declined to participate in the Faces reunion), Glen Matlock of Sex Pistols fame on bass, and drummer/original Faces member Kenney Jones, who was the Who's drummer for several years.

Ronnie Wood was in the Faces before he joined the Rolling Stones in the mid-1970s. The revamped Faces lineup did a tour in 2010, and they have several tour dates in 2011.

As previously reported, the Faces taped an appearance on BBC Two's "The Rob Brydon Show" at Teddington Studios in London on July 1, 2011. The episode will be televised on a date to be announced. On "The Rob Brydon Show," comedian/host Brydon interviewed Wood and Hucknall. Later, the Faces (with Jesse Wood) performed "Stay With Me" on the show.

Although Stewart was rumored to make a "surprise appearance" with the Faces on stage at their Cornbury Festival show, an appearance by Stewart did not happen. As previously reported, on June 26, 2011, Ronnie Wood reunited on stage with Stewart when the two performed together at the 2011 Hard Rock Calling Festival, which took place at Hyde Park in London. Wood made a guest appearance during Stewart's set, and the former band mates did two songs together: the Faces' "Stay With Me" and Stewart's No. 1 hit "Maggie May."

In addition to the 2011 tour, the Faces have an authorized book made with the participation of Ronnie Wood, Jones and McLagan. As previously reported, the official limited edition Faces book titled "Faces 1969-75" goes on sale from Genesis Publications in September 2011. More details and online orders are available at the Genesis Publications website.

Here are the Faces 2011 tour dates announced so far:

July 2, 2011: Cornbury Festival - Oxfordshire, England
July 8, 2011: Bospop - Weert, Netherlands
July 9, 2011: TW Classic - Werchter, Belgium
July 23, 2011: Hurtwood Park Polo Club - Ewhurst, Surrey, England
July 30, 2011: Fuji Rock Festival - Niigata Prefecture, Japan

Previously annnounced Faces 2011 tour dates in Germany (July 16 in Stuttgart, July 17 in Düsseldorf and July 19 in Berlin) have been cancelled.

Glen Matlock, the guy just finds a way to look a fool. What is with that ascot? The British country gentleman? The uncoolest guy in rock, who plays with two of the coolest bands in history.

A book on the Faces; I say - 'Finally!'. And then I see it's by those people from Genesis who turn loving your band into a business investment.

The Faces: Cornbury Festival

Wednesday 6th July 2011
By Reg Little

http://www.oxfordtimes.co.uk/resources/images/1704353/

After Cornbury Festival suffered “financial meltdown”, many feared that it was gone for good. But that was to underestimate Hugh Phillimore’s fanatical commitment to “his baby,” which in its eighth year was transplanted down the road to Great Tew Park.

With glorious surroundings, lovely sunshine and an impressive bill stretching over three days, ‘Poshstock’ fittingly managed to bring us a truly great band that few expected to see perform again. The Faces, headliners on Saturday, split up in the mid-70s when Ronnie Wood joined the Stones and Rod Stewart went solo. Stewart’s foolish refusal to join the party suggested a reunion might never happen — until Wood and company decided to recruit Mick Hucknall of Simply Red and ex-Sex Pistols bass player Glen Matlock for a handful of dates.

At Cornbury, the Faces were finally able to lay to rest the idea they had just been Stewart’s backing band. They were sensational in a way the Stones could never be without Mick, or Zeppelin without Plant.

Hitting their stride with a raucous Miss Judy’s Farm, they ploughed through a back catalogue that included hits (Cindy Incidentally), superb covers (Maybe I’m Amazed) and memorable tributes to late member Ronnie Lane (Ooh La La and Debris). There was even an encore of Small Faces songs (Tin Soldier and All Or Nothing), to remind us that Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones belonged to two legendary bands.

Taking centre stage for much of the show, Ronnie Wood’s guitar playing was blistering, never more so than on I’d Rather Go Blind and I’m Losing You, two great Faces songs that Stewart managed to nab for his own (and best) albums.

As for Hucknall, faced with replacing one of rock’s most distinctive voices but without Rod’s distinctive stage presence, he simply sang his heart out, hitting high notes I fear today’s Rod would struggle with. I saw Stewart at Newbury a month ago. The Faces did not win on points — it was a knockout.

The Oxford Times

Rave review. Sure hope they'll take this thing stateside - and soon.

I agree, but you forget one important detail, that was the "Small Faces" till 1969 and not the "Faces", with maybe the best singer from the sixties, Steve Marriot. A great live band too!

No..it's breakfast TV, so it's live. Unless he stayed up all night, I doubt that Ronnie has been up that early since he left school.

Polo Rocks: Special Mirror offer to see The Faces at Hurtwood Polo Club

By Mirror.co.uk 20/07/2011

...
Stephen Daniels

The newly reformed 1970s legendary super group The Faces will be playing their last UK live gig of 2011 this Saturday at Polo Rocks in Surrey.

Original members from the band’s heyday, Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, The Who’s Kenney Jones, as well as Ian McLagan, are joined by new faces Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols and Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall on lead vocals.

Lucky Mirror readers are being offered the chance to buy special discounted tickets at a cost of £40, a saving of £20, (excl booking fee).

So treat yourself to a glass of champagne on us and join in the fun at Hurtwood Polo Club, on the 23rd July, in aid of the Chakravarty Cup.

To get your discounted ticket click here and enter the code POLO23 when asked.

Hurry though, as this offer is only available until 12 noon on the 22nd July.

Daily Mirror

Guess ticket sales have been sluggish.

The Faces at TW Classic, July 9 - Photo: Geert Van de Velde

From the Mick Hucknall interview in today's Daily Mirror:

The band, Mick, Ronnie Wood, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan, will play in Japan at the end of July.

And they are looking forward to headlining the Prince’s Trust Polo Rocks event at Hurtwood Park, on Saturday.

The Manchester-born singer, who has sold more than 55 million records in a career spanning 30 years, is also loving his new role as Rod’s stand-in.

Despite a barrage of criticism when it was announced he would be fronting the 70s band, Mick has won over the cynics to such an extent there are now calls for him to take over permanently.

Mick brushes that off: “I idolised Rod as a teenager, so I’m standing in until Rod wants to come back – then I’ll watch.”

But it’s not just Mick and Kenney, 62, who are loving being back in the limelight – they firmly believe that the group’s reunion has “saved” former alcoholic and drug addict, Ronnie.

The Rolling Stone has been sober for 18 months and Mick and Kenney believe it was the tour which gave him the incentive to live. Mick says: “Ronnie’s amazing. I’ve never seen him play this well. I think The Faces saved him and there’s nothing wrong with that.

“I still have a drink, I love a drink because I’ve never had that problem, that disease. I know my limit.

“But it’s hard for Ronnie when we come off stage and have a drink and start buzzing.

Poor Ron wants to get out of it before we start talking rubbish. I think he is still sensitive to it being around but at the same time, I really feel he’s not struggling any more.”

Daily Mirror

Good on Ronnie, personally and professionally.

Glen Matlock and Jesse Wood got overlooked...

Keep up the good work, Ronnie.  Glad to see his mates supporting his sobriety - it's a good move on Ronnie's part that he doesn't linger too long after performances.  Even after 5 years of not smoking, I still get the urge when I'm around people who are smoking and it's probably the same with drinking.  Slippery places are the same no matter what the addiction.

Rock 'n' roller still swinging

Thursday, July 28, 2011

There is no other keyboardist in the history of rock 'n' roll with a more impressive CV than Ian "Mac" McLagan.

The musician's staggering stage and session career includes working as a backing artist for The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Joe Cocker, Billy Bragg, Bob Dylan and Chuck Berry, to name but a few.

But ultimately, McLagan will always be associated with Small Faces and Faces; two defining rock institutions of the Sixties and Seventies.

He co-wrote such Faces hits as Cindy Incidentally, You're So Rude and Three Button Hand Me Down, and you can hear his trademark electric piano on everything from Stay With Me by the Faces to the Small Faces' classic Itchycoo Park, as well as Rod Stewart's Maggie May and You Wear It Well.

Much to the delight of their loyal fans, the Faces reunited for a recent tour, featuring Simply Red star Mick Hucknall in place of Rod Stewart on vocals.

"It's been just what I'd hoped for all these years: fun, and rocking!" he tells me.

"We've always wanted to play together, but there always seemed to be conflicts in our schedules.

"Then we were asked to perform a benefit at the Albert Hall, and we were all game, but when it came down to it Rod couldn't make it, so we played three songs with three different singers.

"Mick Hucknall sang Stay With Me that night and it was a blast. We carried on from there."

Now Mac is back, this time flying solo for a string of UK dates, including two nights at Bristol's The Thunderbolt.

He will be performing a selection of his own compositions, including tracks from his last studio album Never Say Never, as well as the odd number that we all know and love.

"It's 'a guy walks into a bar...', so it's a conversation and a performance, really," he reveals. "I play some of my songs, a few new ones, but with a tilt of the hat to Small Faces, Faces and Ronnie Lane. You'll have to be there!"

McLagan entered the music game in Swinging London of the mid-Sixties.

"I was always passionate about music," he tells me. "I was inspired by the likes of Otis Spann and Johnnie Johnson on piano, and Booker T Jones and Billy Preston on Hammond."

Mac ascended from Top of the Pops with Small Faces to the pinnacle of rock with Faces, when Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood joined the band.

Faces ruled the radio and sales charts in the Seventies, playing stadiums, arenas and festivals around the world and leaving countless satisfied fans, many wild tales, and plenty of stressed hotel managers in their wake.

You can read all about it in Mac's vivid memoir, All The Rage, a book hailed as one of the best music books in years. But with all the rock 'n' roll hellraising that went on, did he really include all the gruesome details?

"I left as much out as I put in!" he admits. As the book makes clear, Mac has been involved in his fair share of off-stage shenanigans, but it's his onstage antics that the fans love and I wonder whether Mac can recall any stand-out gigs?

"I remember the Syria Mosque in St Louis about 1972 or '73 with Faces as being outstanding, but they're all as good as I can make them. Bristol will be two of the best!"

There's also a personal favourite moment when the late, great radio DJ John Peel joined them onstage at Top of the Pops, miming the mandolin.

"He became such a fan, but until he hung out with us he didn't drink and disliked drinkers," Mac reveals.

"He played our songs on the BBC when no one else would. Thanks John."

Handed a prestigious Ivor Novello Award in 1996 for his outstanding contribution to British music, and inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2004, Mac has never been one to rest on his laurels.

"Right now. I'm writing, performing, painting like never before," he enthuses. "As well as touring, I've started work on my next album. I'm very excited, but then I often am."

Ian McLagan plays The Thunderbolt on Tuesday, August 9, and Wednesday, August 10, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £15 advance/£18 on the door. Tel 0117 929 9008.

This Is Bristol

Saw Mac last month. Great evening of songs and stories.

Had a chance to chat with him afterwards.
Very gracious and very funny.

See him if you can...UK tour dates @ macspages

No, the review wasn't great.  At the time I read it I was happy to see the only 2 comments were from people who vehemently took issue with it.  One of them sounded as if he had been at the show.

The Faces' Ian McLagan's 11 career-defining tracks
.

Terry Staunton, 4 Aug 2011

Having just completed a handful of festival dates with the latest incarnation of the Faces, keyboard legend Ian McLagan returns to centre stage with a month of solo shows in the UK and Ireland. Controversy still surrounds the decision to enlist Mick Hucknall in the continued absence of Rod Stewart, but Mac feels the revised Faces line-up, which also features former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock in place of the late Ronnie Lane, treat the band’s legacy with respect.

“The thing is that Rod’s voice isn’t what it was, he had surgery on his vocal cords a few years ago and it’s changed the way he sings,” says Mac. “We had some rehearsals a couple of years ago and basically had to re-learn all the songs in different keys to accommodate Rod. Ron Wood had to put heavier strings on his guitar and tune everything down, and we all agreed that it just wasn’t the same.

“That’s not to say we’ll never play with Rod again, never say never. If at some point in the future he’s really up for it, and we can all get comfortable with the changes to the songs, there’s no reason for us not to get back out there.

“We always knew it would work with Mick, and I think he’s surprised a lot of people. He’s a rocker at heart, and was a Faces fan from way back when, so he already knew the songs inside out. He’s been singing them in his bedroom since he was a kid!

“Glen is someone I’ve known since the late 1970s; my old friend Mick Ronson called me up to play keyboards for this band he was producing, Rich Kids, who were Glen and Midge Ure. I did a tour with them and kept noticing Glen throw a few familiar bass riffs into the songs – it turned out his all-time hero was Ronnie Lane, he’d actually taught himself by playing along to Faces records.

“That’s why he’s such a natural fit; having any old bass player, regardless of how talented they are, wouldn’t work as well. Glen really gets the magic and the sensuality of the Faces, he slots in perfectly with me and Ron.”

Mac talked to MusicRadar about his favourite 11 tracks out of the hundreds he’s played on over the years.

A recent interview with Mac in an Irish paper:

http://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/42504/ian-mclagen-rocking-all-over-the-w...

Ian McLagen - rocking all over the world
Galway Advertiser, August 04, 2011.

Ian McLagen. Pic:- Todd V Wolfson
By Kernan Andrews

IAN MCLAGEN boasts one of English rock’s most impressive CVs, having been a member of The Small Faces, The Faces, and Billy Bragg’s band The Blokes, not to mention session work for the Rolling Stones (that’s him playing keyboards on ‘Miss You’), Rod Stewart (Mac is on ‘Maggie May’ and ‘You Wear It Well’), and Bob Dylan, as well as maintaining a solo career since the late 1970s.

Mac, as he is affectionately known, last played Galway in 2000 with Billy Bragg, but he will make his solo Galway debut at the Róisín Dubh on Sunday August 21 at 9pm as part of his A Guy Walked Into A Bar tour.

“It could also be called ‘A Guy Walked Into A Conversation’,” laughs Mac during our Monday morning interview. “It’s been a lot of fun on this tour getting to do a little bit of playing and a little bit of talking.”

On the night Mac will perform songs from his most recent solo album, Never Say Never, new songs from his next album, and classics by The Small Faces, The Faces, and Ronnie Lane, while also regaling audiences with humorous and colourful stories from 45 years in rock’n’roll.

Irish roots

Mac was born Ian Patrick McLagen in Middlesex in 1945, but as his name suggests, his roots are in Scotland and Ireland.

“My grandfather was from Scotland, that’s where the McLagen comes in, but my roots are mainly Irish,” he tells me. “My heart’s in Ireland. My mother is from Mountrath, Co Laois, and I spent all my summer holidays in Mountrath. I was spoiled. It was always summer when we went so I had this skewered version of Ireland as all sunshine, hay, and life on the farm. Then I got to spend a couple of Christmases there...Oh it’s different then!”

Many who grew up in post-war Britain recall it as a time of greyness and austerity, until rock’n’roll came along and produced a cultural and social revolution. Like many who would play a significant part in British pop in the 1960s, Mac was captivated by this new American music.

“When I first heard Brooker T & The MGs’ ‘Green Onions’ I thought ‘That’s what I want to do with my life. I want to make that sound’,” says Mac. “I loved the sound of the Hammond B3 organ he used and it’s why I play a Hammond B3 today.”

The Small Faces

By his late teens Mac was playing keyboards in bands that were metaphorically at least, going nowhere. However his break came thanks to a faulty engine and a incorrectly captioned photo in a newspaper.

“The van for the band I was in at the time kept breaking down and on one occasion it broke down and we missed the opportunity to go to Scotland to play some gigs, so I thought to myself ‘Sod this’ and thumbed a lift home,” recalls Mac.

“I went to see my girlfriend and on the tube I met a friend who said ‘Oh you should join The Small Faces!’ He’d just seen them on TV playing [their debut single] ‘What You Gonna Do About It?’ Then in the morning their manager called me saying he had a job for me.

“I thought it was for session work with The Small Faces but they seen a review of my playing in one of the papers and liked what they read. The thing is the paper had a photo of the singer in the review but my name underneath it, so they thought they were getting someone who looked like the singer.

“The manager Don Arden took one look at me and said: ‘Oh well he’s short’ and plays the Hammond, well two out of three ain’t bad. They all laughed and the three guys - Ronnie, Kenney Jones, and Steve Marriott, all picked me up and there was an instant bond. I played my first gig with them that Saturday.”

The Small Faces were not just a band, they were mods - the cutting edge of British youth culture at the time, with its distinctive look of sharp Italian suits, Vespa motorbikes, parka jackets, adoption of pop art imagery, and liking for US soul and Jamaican ska.

“The rest of the band were mods, but I was a fish out of art school,” says Mac. “In those days you got a grant of £120 a year if you were an art student, a lot of money those days, to spend on materials. I spent mine on booze and paints, and nothing on clothes. I was into denim and a corduroy jacket.

“When I joined The Small Faces it allowed me to go crazy on Carnaby Street and I loved the clothes. In ‘65 when we toured across England, playing different parts of the country every week, nobody could believe the clothes we were wearing. You could only get them on Carnaby Street, but when stores started opening up outside of London fans were able to get the same clothes so we stopped looking different from them. It was a wonderful time.”

The Small Faces would notch up numerous hits throughout the 1960s, but their finest hour was the classic mod rock/psychedelic album Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake (1968), which contained the hit single ‘Lazy Sunday’.

In an interview with Q magazine in 2000, Mac described the album as the band’s attempt to “turn people on without actually telling them to smoke dope”. Was that true?

“That was a bit of a mission of ours,” says Mac today, although it seems the natural ‘highs’ of good company and a beautiful location were even more influential on the songwriting.

“My favourite memories of Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake is not the recording, it’s the songwriting,” says Mac. “Steve, Ronnie, and I took a boat up the River Thames to write songs and we were cruising for 10 days. It was magic. Steve and Ronnie tended to write the songs but this time they couldn’t avoid me as I was there all the time. We wrote many of the ‘Happiness Stan’ songs during that time. When I hear the record now I’m back on Thames.”

By 1969 The Small Faces were gone with Marriott having left to join Humble Pie, but the band’s influence would endure to inspire the punk movement, most notably the Sex Pistols.

“Glen Matlock plays in a reformed Faces doing the Ronnie Lane parts and Steve Jones told me that all the band, bar the singer, were Small Faces fans. It knocks me out. Punks at the time were all about destroying and ignoring the past, but if you listened they had roots. It was just a pose at the time.”

The Faces and the Stones

With Marriott gone, Mac, Lane, and Jones joined forces with Rod Stewart and Ron Wood to become The Faces, who enjoyed great popularity in the early to mid 1970s, particularly with the singles ‘Cindy Incidentally’ and ‘Ooh La La’. However they also gained a reputation as a booze fuelled party band.

“When we started rehearsing as The Faces it was in a pub,” says Mac. “We were a happy drinking band, but it wasn’t like getting drunk all the time. We did some damage to hotels, anybody would in that situation. Stuck in the same kind of hotels, day after day from tour to tour, you’d just want to hurtle and smash things, then you’d remember you have to pay for the damage, so you wouldn’t want to go back, you’d go out to the bars instead.”

The late Ronnie Lane was a staple of both The Small Faces and The Faces and a good friend and hero to Mac.

“He was the main songwriter in The Faces,” says Mac. “More people need to know about his songwriting. We all need to hear his music. I miss him and the best days in the Faces was when Ronnie Lane was in the band.”

The Faces disbanded in 1975, after which Mac became an in-demand session and touring musician, as well as a solo artist, releasing his debut solo album, Troublemaker, in 1979. Meanwhile his old mate Ron Wood had joined the Rolling Stones and Mac was called upon to record with the band - after giving Ron the haircut of his life.

“The Stones were recording in Paris in 1977,” says Mac, “and Ronnie had come to England for the weekend and I cut his hair for him, but I cut it so short that when he came back Charlie Watts didn’t recognise him and thought he must have been arrested. Ronnie called me and said come over for the weekend to Paris to record. We hardly slept and did ‘Miss You’ and an early version of ‘Start Me Up’. When the album [Some Girls] came out in 1978 they asked me to tour with them.”

Now based in Austin, Texas, Mac has never stopped the music since going solo and has maintained a busy touring and recording schedule.

“I’m playing just as much as I ever did,” he says happily. “I’m fascinated by music and melody and words. I have got it and I’m not letting it go. I’m glad to say I’m very happy and I’m blessed.”

Mac will be signing copies of his autobiography All The Rage and his album Never Say Never (both of which will be on sale) at his Róisín Dubh show. Tickets are available from the Róisín Dubh and www.roisindubh.net See also www.ianmclagan.com

UK TV (BBC 2) 'The Rob Brydon Show', London, Teddington Studios, broadcasted 12 Aug, 2011 with an interview with Ron Wood and Mick Hucknall by Rob Brydon and live with Ooh La La with Rob Brydon on guitar & Stay With Me

...

Now that was great!  Ronnie is a charmer and a pleasure to behold.  Loved the story about going to the hospital to see Elvis then backing out because he didn't want to pull rank at the front desk.  And Mick Hucknall made me forget Rod Stewart in the ode-to-misogyny Stay With Me.

Mac's recent website update mentioned the US in 2012, so CA in January is a possibility. How well do you trust the source of that info?

Hope to see this band sooner rather than later...early in the new year'll work.

He told me about the Faith No More show a month before it was official. But for that one he overheard someone talking about it at a club.

thanks for this video, "Ronnie when The Rolling Stones touring"?? I don't know what Ronnie said, something like held together by a string.
Mick T. giving Ronnie a kiss, there's no bad blood with those guys.

Thanks, Keessie! Real fly-on-the-wall stuff.

Nice exchange between MT and Ronnie.

Stones question might've been ill-timed, moments after a Faces show.

Ronnie was rhetorical - "I don't know...how long's a piece of string?"

Thanks to Harry Hendriks and Keessie for sharing this.  I was very happy to see such a warm exchange between Mick T and Ronnie.  I can't help but think there would be room for both.

Also agree the Stones question was ill-timed.  Brings to mind the extreme focus on Charlie during the B4S interviews.  He seemed as peeved with it as Ronnie.  They grasp the team concept even if some of the interviewers don't.
