Dave has an integrated band this time - that is, both women and men.

Dave Alvin announces all-new studio album ELEVEN ELEVEN available 6/21 on Yep Roc.
March 28, 2011, 12:00 am

Yep Roc Records is excited to announce the upcoming release of Dave Alvin's new studio album titled Eleven Eleven on June 21st. Eleven Eleven, described as the "King of California's" most driving, electric blues and rock oriented album since 2004's critically acclaimed Ashgrove, includes 11-tracks, for the first time in his career, written and recorded on the road and during breaks while on tour. The album features a host musicians Alvin had not recorded with since his days in The Blasters, and for the first time ever, sings on record with his brother Phil, the lead singer of The Blasters. A full U.S. summer tour in support is to be announced.

While the backing cast varies with different musicians at sessions separated by weeks of time, the one constant is Alvin's assured guitar-playing. Whether it's finger-picking on an acoustic against an accordion on "No Worries Mija" or blazing riffs on electric over a Bo Diddley beat on "Run Conejo Run," Eleven Eleven casts a consistent gritty, bluesy feel from start to finish. The result is an album with songs rich in vivid stories, taking listeners on a bounty hunt in "Murrietta's Head," a tawdry scene of seduction in "Dirty Nightgown" and a true crime recollection in "Johnny Ace is Dead." Dave's guitar work punctuates each tale, reinforcing moments of urgency, remorse and reflection.

I've never been to a bad Dave Alvin show.  McMurty's pretty dang cool, too.

This is hilarious!  The Blasters are no longer banned from Davis, California!

Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones – FitzGerald’s, Berwyn, IL – Sunday July 3, 2011

This Chicago area gig was a part of Bill FitzGerald’s American Music Festival, which is always a fun and entertaining time. This time the festival was three days instead of four and Dave Alvin played on the last night.

Dave has put together an integrated band of both Guilty Men and a Guilty Woman. The husband and wife team of Lisa Pankratz on drums and Brad Fordham on bass do a fine job as the rhythm section. Lisa was absolutely on top of her game this night - she far exceeded her required duties. Dave said that she is the best drummer he’s ever played with.

I would have liked to have seen Chris Miller on lap steel guitar on a song like Dry River – not just Telecaster and Telecaster with slide. I think Dave chose to bring Chris on this tour instead of my heartthrob, Cindy Cashdollar, because he’s a bit more musically versatile, but it would have been great to have Cindy’s great slide work in the band. It would be great to have someone like Joe Terry on keyboards too. There was an especially large volume of applause for Out of Control. Including the encore, the band played about two hours.

Boss of The Blues
Black Rose of Texas

Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones – Off Broadway, St. Louis – Thursday July 7, 2011

There was extra energy in the air because The Skeletons opened for Dave and The Guilty Ones and Dave had toured with The Skeletons as his backing band for a year and a half in the early ‘90s. Both keyboardist Joe Terry and percussionist Bobby Lloyd Hicks joined Dave and the band on stage this night. Bobby Lloyd was on for the encore playing maracas, clapping and dancing. Joe was on for the first couple of songs and then left and came back about halfway through the show to stay for the rest of the night. Chris Miller had a very contented smile on his face while looking over at Joe Terry and reminiscing about days of yore together in The Guilty Men. Dave gave Joe solos just in the same places as if it were the Guilty Men days.

Dave made a point on both Sunday night and Thursday night of saying that his brother, Phil, came out of the womb singing like Wynonie Harris, but he also said that he (Dave) could remember the lyrics more accurately on Long White Cadillac. Dave did especially hot guitar solos on Out of Control and Run Conejo Run. Tickets were $20 and the place was packed with enthusiastic fans.

Dave Alvin & The Guilty Ones – The Folly Theatre, Kansas City, MO – Saturday, July 9, 2011

Fans of Dave Alvin got an extended amount of music as Dave played at the historic Folly Theatre in Kansas City’s rejuvenated north side.  Dave took advantage of the acoustics of this beautiful venue to play his Martin guitar in a 40-minute acoustic set before taking a 20 minute break to change equipment.  Then the band came back out to play a very satisfying one hour and 33 minute electric set (including encore) with Dave kicking butt with his Stratocaster.

For those who had seen any other stops on this summer’s tour, this was a real departure from the normal plan of mixing in a lot of the latest album’s new tunes with other older tunes in the show.  Dave started out with Blackjack David from his late ‘90s catalog, then on to King of California from even further back.  .

Dave introduced the third song of the night, Every Night About This Time, by telling a story about how George Jones was set to record it and then George’s people decided the song was “too country for George Jones.”  Included in this acoustic set was one of the real croud pleasers, Blue Wing, written by Dave’s pal, Tom Russell.

The second set was much like the main set Dave has been doing on this tour, including new songs Harlan County Line, Black Rose of Texas and Run Conejo Run.  While introducing Long White Cadillac, Dave once again made the point that he can remember the lyrics better than his brother, Phil, could, although he had written the song for Phil to sing.  But here in Kansas City, Dave was making the reference that Phil came out of the womb singing like (native son) Big Joe Turner instead of Wynonie Harris (who was from Omaha).  In fact, Dave was so in respect of the traditions of Kansas City music that he said he refused to play out of tune because Jay McShann’s ghost might come after him.
