What a dolt that DJ was...didn't pick up Charlie's pointed clues so Charlie moves AWAY from the microphone to make it clear that Ben & Dave are there.  He is a class act all the way.

That's a hard one to hear without comparing it to JLL, but nicely done.  This has got to be nothing but pure enjoyment for Charlie.  He seems relaxed and happy.

Loose translation from oe24.at:

Charlie Watts, Wednesday in Vienna

Thomas Zeidler
29 March 2011

© TZ Austria/Zeidler

"The Stones are work - this is fun!"

Today Charlie Watts, drummer of the Rolling Stones for 48 years, is back with his second band the ABC & D of Boogie Woogie for three nights at the Vienna Metropol.

Since 2010, the legendary drummer - whose "other" band is responsible for 150 million CDs sold and two dozen world hits - has done a handful of mini-concerts in Austria. Watts, who plays stadiums around the world with the Stones has already visited "Pop cities" such as Weiz, Amstetten and Imst before Vienna.

For this tour he's traded the Stones usual private jet for a tour bus. Watts said in an Austrian interview: "This is exciting, a completely new feeling. I feel happy here, to me this is fun. It's about the music and not the money."

Boogie

Watts, along with Axel Zwingenberger (piano), Ben Waters (piano) and Dave Green (bass), doesn't play any Stones classics. Instead, they cover boogie and jazz standards by George Gershwin, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles or Fats Domino.

Improvisation

"These improvised Boogie concerts interest me more than the rigid Stones shows. In the Stones, I know what happens next, but here never, therefore, this type of
music is much more interesting. It's also much harder to play than Stones songs", said Watts.

Dates

The Austrian tour is followed by the April 15th release of the new CD 'Boogie 4 Stu'. The Rolling Stones cover the Dylan classic 'Watchin' The River Flow' along with with former bassist Bill Wyman.

And already preparations for the very last Stones tour are being made. Three dates have been reserved at Vienna Stadthalle for Fall 2012.

www.oe24.at

Those smiles don't lie. Charlie's clearly enjoying himself.
Music over money.

As for those Fall 2012 dates, bands routinely request venue "holds".
Doesn't mean a Stones tour's a 100% certainty.

But it's sure nice to know they're thinking about it...

Thanks for posting the interview.  It really shows - this is meaningful to Charlie.  I'm sorry the Stones have become so produced and rigid.  It's one of the reasons the Boogie for Stu thread is such a kick for me.  It's loose and unstaged and has a natural sound and feel.  The musicians are there because they want to be.  Bless you, Charlie.

Too bad Stones shows are indeed so "rigid," and the tours so focused on money. Doesn't have to be that way. It's now obvious the decision not to tour this year had everything to do with money and the soft international economy. Next year's "anniversary" and the London Olympics also figured prominently in the decision. Everything is pointing to a same-old-same-old extravaganza. Pity.

True enough. It makes you wonder how much money is enough - I mean, I'm sure they must have enough in their bank accounts to spend and spend and spend and still the capital would be intact. WHY do they do this?

Smoooth is right.  There is such a stark difference in his manner.  With the Stones he can't wait to get off stage.  Not so with this group of guys.  He actually stopped to sign something.  He appreciates his bandmates and the audience appreciating his bandmates.  Those pianos were physically rocking.  Great clip.  Great man.

I'd like to see Charlie tell Cohl etc. to lower ticket prices. I too would like to focus on the music, since laying out obscene amounts of money on tickets distracts us all from the tunes!

Well according to this press release from Universal it would appear their touring days are over:
From Universal Music Group comes an ad for their new singles box set which states:

Known as the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band in the World, the Rolling Stones is celebrating their success with a new digital and physical box set release in April. While their stadium packing, record-breaking tour days seem to be over, the music they produced remains classic and fans around the world are ready for a re-release.

Is there a link to "this press release"?

The promo info posted at Universal Music Group's website - UMe To Release CD Singles Box Set From The Rolling Stones - makes no mention of touring in the past tense.

Known as the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band in the World, the Rolling Stones is celebrating their success with a new digital and physical box set release in April. While their stadium packing, record-breaking tour days seem to be over, the music they produced remains classic and fans around the world are ready for a re-release. The Rolling Stones Singles (1971-2006) box set will contain forty-five 45s, including all of the top singles they produced over that 40 year span.

US favorites and number one hits, including 'Brown Sugar', 'Miss You', and 'Angie' will be featured in the set, along with fan favorites 'Don't Stop' and 'Mixed Emotions'. But the box set will also contain new recordings from the Rolling Stones never before released. Most of these will be in the form of quality covers of classic rock and blues songs. This list includes Bob & Earl's 'Harlem Shuffle, 'Ain't Too Proud to Beg' by the Temptations, Bob Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone', 'Let It Rock' from Chuck Berry and Smokey Robinson's 'Going to a Go-Go'.

Fans who prefer the Stone's most recent work will also be happy to hear favorites like 'Biggest Mistake', 'Streets of Love' and 'Rain Fall Down'. The combination of new and classic material makes this box set the ultimate collector's item for any Rolling Stones or classic rock fan. The collection begins in 1971, when the band had already reached the number one spot in the UK's singles charts eight times over. However, this was the year they left the UK and expanded to the rest of the world. The constant travel the band undertook during this time shows in the variety of styles they explored during the 70s.

The box set features a bright pink box emblazoned with the trademark lips and tongue that is the symbol of all things Rolling Stones. 45 cds capture the full breadth of this band's remarkable career, accompanied by a 32 page book containing rare photos and essays by Rolling Stones experts and band members.

Thanks, Angie.

Doubt the Stones intended to make their future plans known via a selective sales e-mail.
Just a bit of hyperbole, imo.

Does make you wonder, though. Whoinhell proofread and approved it?

"...the Rolling Stones is celebrating..."

From today's La Vanguardia in Barcelona Spain:

Watts: "I'm in this for my love of the rhythm"

...
Charlie Watts in London on March 9.
GYI

Translation is again loose and dicey, but here's some of the Q&A:

LV: What's the level of involvement when you play drums in the most famous band on the planet or with these three friends?
CW: Exactly the same. I can't speak for the others, but I'll have the same creative and emotional feeling playing tonight in Vienna with Axe, Ben and Dave as in a large stadium with the Stones. It's a question of love for the music and a desire to enjoy the rhythm. I can assure you that if I didn't enjoy what I do when I get on stage, I'd have long ago left the Stones or any other project.

LV: Speaking of them (Stones), when will they return to activity?
CW: I'm not going to answer that question. All I'll say is that next year will be the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the group, and right now none of the four members of the group knows what will happen in 2012. There may be a tour, or there may not.

LV: There's also talk of an album almost completed.
CW: I can't add anything more. Not at this time, I'm sorry.

La Vanguardia

Charlie just wants to play some boogie woogie right now, and he'll worry about that other band later...

Without being overly optimistic... but to me he kina said it like "yep ...and were planning on it again" as in ...everything.

Well to Charlie it "is" painful a bit ..he he.. or so he kina claims but ... we all know the truth. It's a love/hate thing with him and like the others ... he digs it deep down. Lets face it ...none of them have long since needed the cash. He could of long ago said he's fine on his funds and wants to primarily raise horsyes and such.

We all know he digs it. Smiley ...even though it's a pain in the arse to him in a sense. hah

The 'Stone' Charlie Watts brings the 'boogie woogie' to Barcelona

The drummer pays tribute to the origins of rock

JM Marti Font - Barcelona - 04/04/2011

Charlie Watts, drummer for the Rolling Stones and fundamental pillar of the legendary band, will play three nights in Barcelona (from 5 to 7 April), Luz de Gas, with the ABC & D of Boogie Woogie - Watts along with pianists Axel Zwingenberger and Ben Waters, and bassist Dave Green. Nearly 70 and pending whether the Stones will finally tour again, or at least record, Watts remains active thanks to his eternal love of jazz and rhythm & blues. A man of granite and few words, he answers telephone questions from this newspaper about the tour of small venues that takes him to the Catalan capital, but doesn't reveal anything about the Stones and the band's plans.

When asked whether they'll record a new album or are planning to tour, he says: "I don't know anything, we haven't discussed anything yet. The possibility is open, but there is nothing new."

As to whether he misses touring with the Stones, he said: "No, I don't miss the tour, I miss playing together and seeing them, but they live all over the world, so I only see them when they come to London."

Watts is even more elusive in referring to his relationship with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the rest of the band. "What do you think of the memories of Keith Richards?" asks the reporter, hoping he'll have something to say about the evils that the guitarist dropped in Life, his autobiography. "Fantastic" is the answer. And when asked if he had fun reading the book and if he thinks they're true or fantasies: "I have no idea because I haven't read it."

He feels more comfortable when speaking only of music, especially what brings him to Barcelona: jazz and its closest relatives, which is what really mattered to Watts from an early age, prior to joining the Stones and what he's devoted most of his solo projects to. With Charlie Watts Quintet he made two albums about Charlie Parker, the great revolutionary of the genre: From One Charlie and A Tribute To Charlie Parker With Strings.  Because Watts was a jazzman when the Stones called him to replace Tony Chapman in 1963, he contributed significantly to the band's approach to rhythm & blues. He also took part in the recording of the Howlin' Wolf tribute in London in 1971, with Jagger, Bill Wyman, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and other great stars."Wyman I keep in touch with and Clapton I see occasionally, but Wolf is dead."

Now doing something similar with boogie woogie, whose influence on the Stones, he says, is crucial, especially in regard to piano textures. Asked if the music of today interests him, he says: "No, and it never has. I just listen to old jazz or classical music. I listen to soul music a lot."

Charlie is the master of the non-answer.  What does he think of Keith's memories?  Fantastic.  Are they true?  Doesn't know - hasn't read the book.  I get the impression he'd rather answer questions from his horses.  No one will ever accuse Charlie Watts of being a blabber mouth.

No. Certainly nobody would accuse Charlie of being a "blabber mouth". However, I once accussed Charlie of being a "slacker" as far as his drumming is concerned.

Although, I am fairly sure I was simply making a jokey at the time... haha  Wink

Having just turned 70 earlier this month Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts nonetheless shows no signs of hanging up his sticks just yet as he prepares to play two special nights at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in London on 24 and 25 June.

A longstanding lover of jazz, Watts for the Dean Street shows teams up once again with boogie-woogie piano exponents Axel Zwingenberger and Ben Waters with old school friend Dave Green on bass and Lila Ammons (granddaughter of boogie-woogie legend Albert Ammons) on vocals. The band occasionally gets together for short tours, but this is a first for the Pizza Express Jazz Club.

Watts has always had an interest in bebop and hard bop and in the 1980s and 1990s kept his own jazz groups busy with tours and albums such 'Live At Fulham Town Hall' and Bird homage 'From One Charlie'. More recently in 2004 his live album recorded just over the road in Ronnie Scott’s – 'Watts at Scott’s' – is perhaps the pick of the bunch, but Watts has also teamed up to effect with jazz-influenced rock players such as drummer Jim Keltner. Watts’ interest in boogie-woogie goes way back to Rocket 88 in which he played with Stones co-founder Ian Stewart.

There are two houses for the Pizza shows each night and while tickets are a crisp £55 per head there’s sure to be considerable demand from Charlie’s legion of fans.

Another date added to the fall sked:

Charlie Watts and The ABC & D of Boogie Woogie live in Paris in October

...
Kevin Mazur

Charlie Watts, drummer for the Rolling Stones will perform at the New Morning in Paris in early October 2011 for two concerts with his jazz band The ABC & D of Boogie Woogie. It consists of Axel Zwingenberger and Ben Waters, both on piano and Dave Green on bass.

The illustrious septugenarian drummer Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stone is back to his first love: jazz. He'll perform with his band The ABC & D of Boogie Woogie in the mythic and intimate room at the New Morning in Paris Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011. Two concerts are scheduled the same night, one at 18:00 and the other at 20:00.

Charlie Watts and his band will perform it's repertoire of classic jazz as well as songs from the 20's and 30's... the very opposite of rock with the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Charlie Watts and The ABC & D of Boogie Woogie (Axel Zwingenberger and Ben Waters, both on piano and Dave Green on bass) will give two concerts of an hour and a half each.

Charlie was interviewed ahead of this weekend's ABC&D show in Paris. Couple of quotes from AFP:

Stones plans for 2012 - "I guess if we agree, we'll do some concerts...I doubt we'll do a tour."

RS50 - It's "primarily the record company" that will mark the occasion, perhaps with a documentary.

This is big - probably the most substantial news so far and from the most trustworthy source.  Possibly concerts (if they agree) but probably no tour.  Thus spake Charlie.

Charlie Watts: "What is a good drummer? Someone who has the swing."

Benedicte Rey
Agence France-Presse/Paris

http://goo.gl/QbkRw

While Mick Jagger's in a supergroup with Damian Marley and Dave Stewart, Charlie Watts devotes himself to his lifelong passion, jazz.  And whether playing rock or boogie-woogie, there is one thing that matters to the Stones drummer, "the swing".

"A good drummer is someone who can swing and make you dance. If a drummer is able to make you dance, it takes you back to Africa, the roots of everything," he said in an interview with AFP.

What made him fall in love with jazz?  "Swing. I can't be more specific than that, it's the basis for all."

The drummer will perform Sunday at the New Morning in Paris with his quartet "The A, B, C & D of Boogie-Woogie." The next day he'll be one of the headliners of the 24th edition of "The Summer" festival in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (near Paris).

Speaking about jazz and France, a memory comes to mind, "When I was 17, I went to Paris to see Bud Powell (well-known bebop pianist) . At that time English fans of jazz had to "go to France" to listen, he says.

Charlie Watts discovered jazz at age 13 with neighbor Dave Green, the "D" of "The A, B, C & D of Boogie-Woogie."

"We listened to Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Chet Baker and it was everything we dreamed of doing. This he does by the way, he became a jazz bassist. And me, I play everything they pay me to play."

A musician acclaimed by his peers and a member of the greatest rock band, Charlie Watts displays an unwavering modesty.

He's careful to emphasize that "The A, B, C & D of Boogie-Woogie" is not "his" group and all its members (the quartet is completed by pianist Ben Waters and Axel Zwingenberger) have "their own careers on their side."

He doesn't consider himself a jazz musician. Self-taught on drums, he learned to play by ear. "I've never been in a school to learn to play jazz. It's not what I like. What I like about jazz is emotion."

The music he plays with his quartet, the boogie-woogie, is "made for fun, a night of dancing. No need to play complex asymmetrical measures for "fun."'

Playing in a jazz quartet and with the Rolling Stones isn't so different, he assures.

"One's just amplified and on a larger scale, while with the other is smaller and quieter."

His best memory on stage? "I don't really have one. Most musicians are interested in what comes next. If the concert the night before was great, we want that night to be just as good."

Next year, the Rolling Stones will be celebrating their 50 year career, but the drummer doesn't have much to say about that.

It's "primarily the record company" that will mark the occasion, perhaps with a documentary.

"I guess if we agree, we'll do some concerts...I doubt we'll do a tour."

http://goo.gl/pPY6c

Tour's iffy...but some is still a whole lot better than none.

Charlie does everything but roll his eyes and grit his teeth in the Milan interview.  You can almost feel the dread at being singled out for the questions.  'Well..if you really want to know you'll ask the guy on the end.'

Interesting that he only sketches his hotel rooms/beds when he is with the Stones.  There's a little OCD in all the best people...

Love the men of boogie-woogie.  Thanks!

The record company is calling the shots for the 50th Anniversary? That must be a contractual agreement. A few concerts IF THEY AGREE, but no tour. Huh. We saw this coming. Oh well those few tickets should be impossible to get! OMG I'm stressing already!

Hi left shoe shuffle, thanks for all the awesome pictures you posted!

Do you know if an audience recording from the Paris show is available elsewhere? A friend of mine attended the 2nd show and saw a taper near him. I would like to have that gig in my collection!

Thanks to the shooters!

Hope that taper will share the boogie woogie...if so, it'll likely be found in the usual places.

Agree completely.  I don't think he's missing them at all.  Totally immersed and satisfied in being a part of the ABCD of BW.  The expression on his face tells the story.

Charlie's comments are voiced over rather than subtitled.
Maybe one of our French friends can translate, s'il vous plaît?

Our friend Juan aka Leteyer from our message board in Spanish just posted these images

He added

Quote:
Yo asisti al concierto del lunes. Francamente genial, una version maravillosa de Route 66.

Charlie feliz, nunca lo he visto reir tanto. Ojala este preparandose para una gira Stoniana.

Maybe one of our French friends can translate, s'il vous plaît?

Let's try :

C : My influences are all the Jazz musicians, I don't have any rock influence, except maybe for Chuck Berry. When I was young I never listened to Elvis, I never liked him.

C : My role is the same, have the drums accompany without drowning the rest. Then it comes down to the volume and I must say that it sometimes gives me a headache with the Stones.

Journalist : ...and he might get more headaches if the Stones get together again next year, an info he wouldn't confirm or deny.

Hope that helps, nothing very juicy I'm afraid.
