They didn't lip-synchronize (or instro-synch) at Isle of Biff, which has the same phenomena Fishbuck noted - how can 4 guys produce such massive sound?

See, e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM7SYuhQ0yk

The Who were the best at times.  No one else like them, in any case.

The Who with Moon and Entwistle were fantastic.

However, over the entire duration of their career the answer is Rolling Stones.

But you have left out The Kinks.

1968-1971? The Who.

1972-1973? The Stones.

After that? Probably Springsteen.

a few Zep fans might take exception...but its all subjective...Saw the Who in Toronto with Moonie playing his last tour gig and it was incredible...but no 72 Stones!

No 'probably' about it IMO.  Certainly in the E Street Band era.

Although I'd still argue that the Stones up to 1973 would shade The Who.

Prince circa 1987-88 (and occasionally since) would run 'em all close, as would Dylan '65-66 and again in the mid 70s., Marley & The Wailers in the 70s and of course Hendrix.

Ones that didn't work out, definitely.  The one with G. E. Smith and a drummer didn't jell, though good intentions abounded.  I blame lack-a-day Bob there - I saw one of the shows.

Rolling Thunder Revue playing the Desire songs was definitely first-rate big-sound chaos and cacaphony.  I just listened to the CBS anthology of RTR and it's missing the "wall of sound" in the originals.  Turning Scarlet Rivera down was a bad move applied to a great band.  I saw the afternoon show at Niagara Falls.

For me it's only the Stones. Anytime Keith rips off an open G riff it's all the magic in the world right there. It doesn't get better than seeing the Rolling Stones launch into Brown Sugar or some other high-octane classic.
