A question:
Is it just me, or do the guitars sound different in the music video version of It's Only Rock N' Roll compared to the studio cut--more electric, like another guitar part is on the music video version that isn't on the studio version?

I think the music video version actually sounds better. More of an edge to it.

By the way, do both Mick Taylor and Ronnie play on "It's Only Rock N' Roll" (the song)? I ask as Mick was still in the band when it was released...It'd be interest if both Mick and the man who'd eventually replace him played on the same song.

Taylor doesnt play on it. Nor do Bill or Charlie for that matter. The backing track was done at The Wick (then Woody's house, now the home of Pete Townshend) in December 1973 and originally featured Woody, Jagger, Kenney Jones on drums and David Bowie on backing vocals, handclaps etc. Ronnie was working on his first solo album at the time. He and Mick had co-written two songs - IORR and 'I Can Feel The Fire' but Mick struck a deal with him that Woody could have solo writing credits for 'Fire' but Mick could keep IORR for the Stones (which would mean a Jagger-Richards credit).

Willie Weeks added a bass part and Stu overdubbed a piano on to IORR later on in addition to Keith adding a few guitar parts. Bowie's contribution was erased but they kept much of the original backing track.

That's nuts...That basically makes it not really a Stones track IMO, or at least as much a Stones track as those Jamming with Edward sessions were.

The "It's Only Rock 'n Roll" video soundtrack is much closer to the original track as recorded by Mick and Ron et al at the Wick. The only Ron on the released version of the track is the 12 string acoustic guitar track (briefly heard during the released version introduction and during the acoustic break in the song) apparently. When Keith heard the track he wiped out all of Ron's guitars and replaced them with his...Mick T was not to be seen on the track...I have heard that Ron Wood, Pete Townsend and David Bowie were on backing vocals....

True, but then if its on a Stones album, its a Stones track. Plus Keith overdubbed a LOT of guitars.  If its 'not a Stones track' by virtue of having a line up that consists of more 'non Stones' than 'Stones members' then you could argue that pretty much rules out most of 'Exile' as well.

Legend has it that Keith got 'caught short' while engulfed in the bubbles, whipped his todger out and had a pee.

Charlie's visible discomfort was for real. A lack of research had ignored the fact that as he's sitting down, he drowns faster than everyone else... you made a grown man cry
