within the last six months or so, Ringo has successfully turned me on to townes van zandt. just wondering what others thought of him. i have been spinning "townes van zandt" for about three weeks now and have been finding it hard to put anything else in the CD player while i'm cleaning the kitchen.

i remember about ten years ago when i first started listening to cat stevens, i thought i had finally found someone that was in the same class as dylan in terms of songwriting. of course, after a few weeks, the silliness of songs like "boy with the moon and star on his head" set in and those grandiose opinions went by the wayside. i love me some cat, but he ain't no dylan. townes, on the other hand, just might be. or am i just in the early euphoria/puppy love phase? will it wear off???

what a fucked up individual....jumping out of a four story window just to see how the first few seconds of the fall felt?? what a manic. sad, really...he should still be singing.

His live albums earn him props from me (+ his cover of DF).  Some of his albums have songs that don't particularly catch your ear as 'must-haves' but they're worth a listen simply for the mood/atmosphere alone.  Rex's Blues is really a beautiful song, maybe my favorite of his.  Unfortunately, it seems like some of his creativity was fueled by his internal struggles, which led to his sad end.

Glad you are over the Hezbollah Stevens = Dylan bit.  Van Zandt isn't Dylan either, but in ways different than Stevens.  This phase of yours won't wear off, he is important and real.  More importantly, he knew how to drink like a man.  I got into him about 3-4 years ago, great stuff, Spuds.
