The hairs at the front of my hairline have gotten a little thinner and shorter than the rest--like the actual individual strands at the VERY front at physically thinner than the rest of my hair strands.

The man's father was the same way. Lived to his mid 70's with a full, thick head of hair. All in the genes.

Maybe he just puts a lot of mousse in it and blow drys it out! And, that creates a lot of volume, giving the illusion of having a lot of hair! I've seen pictures of him with all his hair slicked back with gel, and it did not look like a toupee, it looked real.
