Ronnie Wood says Rolling Stones may work together again 'maybe next year'

It's starting to look like the Rolling Stones will not be touring in 2011, despite much speculation that they would. At the 2011 South Bank Sky Arts Awards in London on January 25, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood told the media that the band will work together again "maybe next year."

Keep in mind that the Rolling Stones (according to Wood and guitarist Keith Richards) held a group meeting in December 2010 to discuss their future plans. It appears that it was decided at the meeting that there would be no Rolling Stones tour in 2011.

Although Wood and Richards said in many of their 2010 interviews that they were ready and willing to tour with the Stones in 2011 (and drummer Charlie Watts said that the Stones would tour again when Wood and Richards "get bored"), lead singer Mick Jagger remained pubilcly silent about any plans or wishes to tour with the Rolling Stones in 2011. Given that he is the Rolling Stones member who is most involved in the business side of the band's tours, it appears very likely that Jagger is the band member who has the final say on any tour plans for the band.

If the Stones were touring in 2011, there would be some early signs by now: Venues would be put on notice; members of the band's support team would have their schedules adjusted to accommodate the tour; companies involved in Rolling Stones tour merchandising would be gearing up for for new products. None of that has happened, and it would have by now if the Stones were doing a world tour in 2011.

From a marketing point of view, it would make more sense for the Rolling Stones to start a new tour in 2012, since that year will be the 50th anniversary of when the Rolling Stones became a band. However, it remains to be seen if a Rolling Stones tour in 2012 will happen.

In addition, the Stones have toured when they have a new release to promote, even if it is a "greatest hits" compilation such as 2002's "Forty Licks,"  which had a few previously unreleased songs. So far, there is no indication yet that the Stones are releasing any new music in 2011, although that could change since a new release does not take as long to plan as a world tour. A Rolling Stones world tour takes about a year to plan, and by all indications, 2011 will not be the year that the Stones will tour again.

Is Mick saving songs for the Stones since he's not had a solo album, he's saving them for the Stones?

Keith as well...

Something could be brewing really big folks...

Or maybe a 50 Licks is right I dunno...

That story has been out for the last week or so. I don't think Ronnie knows any more or less about Stones touring plans now then he ever has.

Look at it another way.

They were always planning to tour in 2012 for obvious reasons - and those plans havent changed, even if there has been no agreement as yet on how it'll be done.

The only thing thats different is that every year since 2008, there have been varying levels of hope amongst fans that there would be a tour in between 2007 and 2012. I think there probably would have been a year or two ago but for Patti Hansen's illness keeping Keith preoccupied. Something which was totally understandable, I think we can all agree.

I mentioned last month that they'd met as planned in early December - but hadnt decided anything re: a tour. However, they'd agreed to meet again in February 2011. That delay pretty much convinced me that a 2011 tour was becoming more and more unlikely. Relationships between Mick and Keith aren't that good at all (so I was told at the time), although thats not necessarily anything new and it's NOT something thats going to prevent the band going on the road again to mark their 50th anniversary as a band.

That article reads like a blog that's had most of it's sources lifted from internet forums. It's well written and Carla seems like a big fan, but I dont see much in it thats revealing, to be quite honest.

Agreed P.
It DOES sound a bit more "official" than anything else I've read, which
is why I posted it.
Thanks Gazza and Nellie for the positive spin on the entire situation.

The writer has the very best points I've saw in a while....

No venue's booked .... no merchandising ventures yet.... no sign of any new album....

It is getting later and later. If we don't hear of them cooking something up (as far as tours go) within  another two months we can forget it for a 2011 fall tour. If mid-march arrives and we still have no signs of anything it simply won't be an option anymore as far as a fall tour goes.

I had a feeling they wouldn't do anything in 2011.  The US economy is still horrible and I'm sure they keep a close eye on things like that.  Paul McCartney has been successful in 2010 touring the states though.  He has some high ticket prices just like U2 and the Stones.

And please everyone, the Stones are musicians.  It's their only job. They aren't going anywhere. They aren't going to retire. The band will carry on for many years to come. Look at other acts such as BB King. He's on the road forever. Let's bring on the 50th anniversary tour and let the fun begin!

I saw BB King last year and there does come a time when someone does need to quit touring. Stones in 2012?....I'm skeptical but am usually wrong so there's hope!

Really cant see the similarity. BB King tours all the time and thats been his MO for decades. He's a solo act and has nowhere near the Stones' wealth either.

The Stones take years off at a time and thats been the norm now for about 30 years. And playing rock 'n' roll with the Rolling Stones isn't the only job or vocation that they have as individuals either.

You get the feeling for Mick, its not something he "needs" to do. He has other interests in life.
In a recent interview Keith said the Stones need to find a way to grow up, meaning you cant prance around on stage with the same energy at 70 as you did at 30.

OK There is a logical reason why MICK is delaying the tour. Yeah the economy is a big part of it, but it's also because MICK wants to be sure when they do plan the next tour that it will completely sell out. And as we wait, we want them more, all across the board from die hards to casual fans to people who want to introduce the Stones to their kids and even grandkids for the sake of history. What we cant have, we surely want, its a simple rule of human nature, and by not giving us too much of them, they make us want them more. DAMN RIGHT!
