Ronnie Spector has given another interview expressing her lingering feelings about Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. Spector and Richards dated briefly when the Rolling Stones and her singing group the Ronettes toured together in 1964, before she was married to and divorced from music producer Phil Spector, and before Richards met actress/model Anita Pallenberg, who would become the mother of his two eldest children.
In November 2010, Ronnie Spector gave an interview in the Hartford Courant, saying that she and Richards "still carry that torch" for one another.
Now she tells the San Francisco Chronicle in an interview published on December 19, 2010: "I should have married Keith."
Given that Ronnie Spector has a reputation for being an eccentric, it is likely she made that comment in a joking manner. Ronnie Spector and her manager/husband, Jonathan Greenfield have been married since 1982, and they have two sons together. Richards and former supermodel Patti Hansen, married since 1983, have two daughters together.
Here is what else Ronnie Spector said about Richards in the interview: "You know what Keith Richards said to me? He said, 'I love your new CD ["Ronnie Spector's Best Christmas Ever"] so much. Your new stuff is a bitch.' That was his compliment to me."
Commenting on Richards' flattering comments about her in his memoir "Life," Spector said: "Keith Richards is so nice. You have no idea. He lives 15 minutes away from me. I see him dropping his kids off at school. I remember one day he's standing outside, beer in one hand, cigarette in the other, picking up his daughter. The great thing was he wasn't driving. He played on my record and didn't charge anything."
When asked if it was true that Richards had asker her to marry her at one point, Ronnie Spector replied: "He gave me his book and on the first page he wrote, 'It's a love affair.' For 40 years, we've had fun together. He's innocent and I'm innocent. People think he's been on all these drugs and has had all these women. But he's only been with, like, two women. He doesn't do drugs anymore. He has a beer or two. Give him a break. He's so nice. I should have married Keith. Our kids would have had great hair."
A few things should be noted to put those last comments into a more truthful perspective. Richards, by his own admission, is far from innocent. As for his drug/alcohol use, Richards has said in interviews that he still indulges in marijuana and hard liquor.
As for Richards only being with two women, that is true only if you consider that two women (Pallenberg and Hansen) have had his children. But Richards has said in many interviews and in his memoir that he has had several lovers besides the women who the mothers of his children.
Finally, Ronnie Spector has said in interviews that she and Richards never went any further than kissing when they were dating. So take her comments for what they're worth and how believable you think they are. Some people may have more "selective memories" than others.
