Yeah, i got a 1080p lcd. Got the ps3. Got a new Yamaha receiver & new Panasonic dvd player. I got it all! Here in OZ, our ps3's are set up only to play our region. It's the old hassle many of you Yanks seem to have with region coding on standard dvds. Our dvds are "world zone" and have been for years, but not the ps3 - and not many blu-ray players. It's a bummer! I can get it modified, but it costs a packet & if anything goes wrong, i'm on my own. So i got a "world zone" upscaling dvd player. Plays everything in 1080p. And my amp upscales every connection too. Though i dont worry about that too much as hdmi cables are my only connections now.
Blu-ray is the way to go, but as can be appreciated, we dont get alot of obscure releases out here. And i dont want to take a chance that a blu ray from U.K. or U.S. will/wont work on my ps3. Oh, we get all the major stuff, but ultra rare dvd's can be hard to find. I order from DVD PACIFIC for any U.S. release i cant get here. Which these days, is quite rare. I'm looking for a great early 70's film called "Punishment Park" which if i can get here, costs a fortune. With our dollar now equal to the Greenback, buying on line has never been better. But, as i am going to U.S. in March, i'm gonna wait to see what i can find.
What i'm saying is, a upscaling unit can equal blu-ray. Maybe not 100%, but sure as hell, not far off. Oddly, i got the blu-ray of L&G, and won the standard dvd from Facebook. No significant difference i can see.
