December 2 - Stones Summit: we have the date!

=> Thanks to some of our friends (thanks EG666), we have the information that the 'Stones Summit', which Keith has already spoken about to happen this month, will take place on December 7. Whatever comes off from it - we'll let you know ASAP. Let's all hope for the best: a new album and tour!

Music, to me, is the joy, right? I love my kids most of the time, and I love my wife most of the time. Music I love all the time. It's the only constant thing in my life. It's the one thing you can count on. :Keith Richards 1993

"We'll let you know" ? Eh? Since when have the Stones started issuing press statements following annual meetings?

Its not as if Mick and Keith are going to emerge Munich-style holding a piece of paper a la Neville Chamberlain declaring that they've agreed to make a new record.

I'd imagine that for a while yet the only thing anyone will 'know' will be based on rumour.

Don't their annual meetings - It's generally once-a-year, right? - usually take place in London? With playing at pirates in Greenwich, book-signings, television appearances and so forth, Keith seems have to have spent a hell of a lot more time in England than usual. He'll be getting sick of the place!

Isn't December 7th when Altmont took place?... (not that it matters... it is just recognizable as a date in Stones history some way to me....).

Gotta be some time soon though. A world tour is a huge undertaking as you know. Stadiums will have to be booked soon and if they are to release an album by next fall ....

Heck we have been through this countless times. Writing it, recording it, mixing it, and mastering it. Your talking an eight month gig on and off for them usually.

I heard it's happening on Tuesday.

Seems like it would take more than one day to decide on something as monumental as a Stones tour.
Gotta assume it's been decided already, just got to sign the paperwork maybe.

At any rate, assuming they do tour, we won't get the official word until around May or so if they follow precedent.

They're no farther behind schedule than they usually are.

And I guess it speaks volumes for what passes for musical inspiration when they have to meet for the first time in a year to decide whether they can be motivated enough or not to write songs for a new record.

One would like to believe that in the six years since they last did any studio work, they have already accumulated enough ideas for a collection of songs which could be churned out reasonably quickly.

No album of new material should take anything like eight months.

If they hate each other that much, why bother working together for a prolonged period of time? Seriously! If I was that loaded and had achieved that much in my life, nothing in the world would persuade me to waste my energy working with someone that I couldnt stand.

I don't think this 'spat' is a major issue, to be honest.

It really is like a board of directors meeting that any "corporation" holds annually. Realistically a decision on tour or album has already been made and will just be confirmed or delayed or canceled after this meet and greet. Crumpets, tea and big checks is all I see happening.

I gotta say....I wonder how much of this supposed "Summit Meeting" is complete bull.

If they are meeting I am sure it is to write or record. Geez it will easily be 2011 any day. I am sure if they were to tour it would be official by now and stadiums would be booked, a producer booked, a studio in mind or whatever.

It is December.... quite sure they already know the game plane/time frame if they are to tour next summer/fall and this idea of a Summit to kick things around and discuss it gotta be wrong.

This meeting to discuss plans and all gotta be BS. Mick already talked to Keith. They both admit that much and Keith says they are to start working this month or next.

I think, if they are getting together and the holidays are just around the corner it may be to finalize something or work on something because for fucks sake... January will be here any day and they should of long since known a game plan for recording, tour rehearsals, touring etc. etc. after all...2011 is basically here.

They sure would be starting late in the game if they haven't even met to discuss the plans of a world tour, sponsor, album ya-da ya-da that is supposed to take place next summer or fall and everything...

Remember... summer is just six months from now ...then there are tour rehearsals and everything. If they are meeting its gotta be to start writing/recording or something. Not simply to make a game plan... it's past that time frame at this point you'd think....

Keith made these comments early last month:

But in an interview with BBC 6 Music, Richards said that fans can expect a new Stones album and tour in 2011. "After these many years working together, we have a lot of unfinished stuff to work on that we had to leave off the last album. And knowing Mick, as I do, he's a very prolific writer. I have ideas [too] and we'll put them together in December [2010] or January [2011]. We're looking forward to working."

This as well goes along with they are gonna write and or start recording versus simply talking or meeting to plan something. Keith acts like it's already planned, which, at this point and time, it should be...

In my opinion this Summit thing gotta be mostly bullocks... or it is to officially sign the venture or start working as Keith said. Too late to kick ideas around now. Now in December you'd think they better be getting started versus simply having a meeting about possibilites...

Keith's recent comments coincide with my thoughts.

Ian,tour or no tour. It's a yearly meeting they have to go over business affairs. It just takes on added implications in the internet instant info age. From my understanding, this is something they have done for years. Tour or no tour.

It's the annual Board Of Directors meeting, as described above by gimmekeef.

Charlie, Ronnie and Keith have all mentioned such a meeting in recent interviews.
Ronnie frequently referred to a "summit" when he was doing press for 'I Feel Like Playing'.

BTW, those quotes attributed to Keith aren't entirely accurate.

OK I hope Gazza is right, and he usually is so they should just be able to jump right in and pick up where they left off! If they already have some songs in the works it could be done in a few months. With ABB they started the tour a little earlier than the album came out. So it could go that way again, rehersals in Toranto in spring 2011, maybe April followed by a Press Conference in NY, (for the maximum media coverage) in May, and the tour starting in the US in August, and finishing up at the London Olympics in 2012! Its do-able!

Rehearsals tend to be around 5-6 weeks. The last tour started on 21 August 2005 - the rehearsals started on 14 July.  In 2002, they started rehearsing around 15 July and the tour started on 3rd September.

Personally, I hope to fuck they're nowhere near the Olympics!

They'll meet even if it means they're just deciding that they're not going to work together for the next 12 months and do solo stuff. Even in the mid 80s when they all but dissolved the band for a couple of years, they'd still have to have annual business meetings. This is a company that generates millions of pounds every year, dont forget. Mick and Keith would probably go for years at a time without seeing each other if they didnt have to deal with this side of things.  Its the business meetings which dictate whether they DO have 'big plans' for the next year, not the other way around.

Well you'd certainly think they would of already started writing and trying out demo's.

Normally by this time Mick and Keith have long since got together to write tunes. However, during the some of their shorter recording stints, such as the Bridges sessions they would of had just begun round now. Trouble is, that album was pretty pressed at the end, almost uncomfortably too close to the actual dead line.  You would think they don't want to be too pushy to the time constraints again as they did with that album.

Normally they would be almost finished writing and ready to start recording or would have already started. It's possible they have material Mick and Keith, or all The Stones worked on before that they could continue working up, which Keith alluded to. Possibly this could cut down on the amount of time actually needed versus starting with all new never worked on material.

If it is to be written/recorded as possibly in the vain of Tattoo You, I wonder what sessions they are going over to find things/bits/ideas?

I wonder if it is from Bridges or ABB or both? Keith indicated they had alot of stuff they were working on and had to be left off of last album? did bridges produce alot of tunes as well? I know in 2002 Ronnie said in the few weeks they spent in France for 2002/2003 Licks they had another album in the making (but he does tend to over shoot things).

Hope they look back and make the best choices for song ideas and as well write/put together some brand new great stuff for it.

From what I've been told, the band DID actually meet earlier this month (even though the Ronnie interview in the Glastonbury thread seems to indicate otherwise - maybe it's an old interview).

Just the four of them, no management present or anyone else.

They'll meet again in the New Year - although it could be as late as February which isn't a great sign IMO for anyone hoping for a new record or tour anytime soon.

Still nothing concrete as yet for future touring plans.

My suspicion is that they will tour at some point in 2012. I have heard that feelers have already been put out regarding venue availability during this time. However, this doesn't really mean much as the Stones' tours, and all large scale tours, routinley check logistics regardless of any current tour plans. It is always the first "shot across the bow" of any planned tour though. So that's a good thing.

I just think that the 50th anniversary tour is going to be too big of a natural draw for the band to ignore. Business wise it's a no brainer. And while they would never announce it as their final truly last tour, it would naturally be perceived as much by many, and in fact, it may well be.

The only facts I know are what I posted, mate. Anything else I heard is speculative at the minute. Doesnt exactly give them much time to put any new music together though if they're going to tour in 2011.

So does Fall 2011 look possible. Or is it getting too late for that as well?

The only facts I know are what I posted, mate. Anything else I heard is speculative at the minute. Doesnt exactly give them much time to put any new music together though if they're going to tour in 2011.

Your right No it wouldn't give them much time...  Last time out Don Was said that there was material from previous sessions they were thinking about working into the Bigger Bang sessions. Then he went on to say "but this all seems to be of a piece".... meaning their current work (which became A Bigger Bang) was all from a cloth that he wanted to keep going with versus trying to integrate any of the previous session material.

Soooo... possibly they have that material to go over again if they want to use it this time out if they are to release an album in 2011 which wouldn't necessarily require the usual needed time ...

As well, Keith said they had material they couldn't use on ABB in which he was probably talking about the same stuff.

So maybe they are going to try and get some of that cooking in conjunction with some new stuff  in which it wouldn't take as long as the norm?

This is the only thing I can think of because as you noted... starting now, much less February... just wouldn't be all that much time.... In fact ... if it were to be all new material they sought to do... it just isn't realistically enough time you'd think. Especially when factoring in mixing the album, cover art, stage design, tour rehearsals, etc. etc. It really doesn't seem like it could fit... how could it?... if all this was to be new material and assuming they are going to release an album in late summer or early fall to coincide with  a tour...

Interesting.

They've been talking about these mysterious "left overs" for decades. I truly dont think their is much around that is of use. How else can you explain 2 albums of new material in 13 years.

I think Mick doesn't want to tour yet.

But Mick needs to spend a month at Keiths place just to jam out.

Mick is getting older, his sexual needs are less, meaning music is more.

Next year we WILL know some fantastic news.

Their vault is so big they could never keep it shut.
