Willie Nelson charged with Pot Possession in Texas

SIERRA BLANCA, Texas – A U.S. Border Patrol spokesman says country singer Willie Nelson was charged with marijuana possession after 6 ounces was found aboard his tour bus in Texas.

http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20101127/capt.942c289daaba43c5b44d5250d951ecc4-942c289d... – FILE - In this Nov. 7, 2010 photo, Willie Nelson performs before the start of the NASCAR AAA Texas 500 …

Patrol spokesman Bill Brooks says the bus pulled into the Sierra Blanca, Texas, checkpoint about 9 a.m. Friday. Brooks says an officer smelled pot when a door was opened and a search turned up marijuana.

Brooks says the Hudspeth County sheriff was contacted and Nelson was among three people arrested.

Sheriff Arvin West didn't immediately return a phone message left at his home Friday, but he told the El Paso Times that Nelson claimed the marijuana was his. The singer was held briefly a $2,500 bond before being released.

Nelson spokeswoman Elaine Schock declined to comment when contacted via e-mail by The Associated Press.

Six ounces is a lot. I'm pretty sure it's a felony in most states.

Less than an ounce would be a misdemeanor.

Unfortunately not getting much better. The Cali prop to legalize was defeated. It was so poorly written, even the smokers were against it. They said keep the government out of my weed. But even the medical marijuana outlets are getting hassled by the state now. At some point, they have to sit down and draft some realistic legislation that allows the state to make some money without making getting it illegally a better option. Better seen on weed!

It should be self-evident that it is impossible to enforce a law which 45% of voters think should be overturned.  Rationality, however, has nothing to do with cannabis prohibition.  Like alcohol Prohibition, it is based fundamentally on a moralistic and ultimately religious belief about drug use specifically and alteration of consciousness generally.  These are the "petty morals" which Keith rejected.  Prohibition laws  serve only to increase the intrusive power of government into personal lives while fostering corruption and disrespect for law.  This should come as no surprise for anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the history of Prohibition.  It would be a pleasant surprise if so-called "small government" Republicans and Tea Partiers supported getting government out of our heads.

If you don't know Willie is a tree hugging hippie who smokes tons of weed, and is all about green energy causes, may seriously lose credibility for knowing what is happening in music... please, even if you're have to lie, tell us you were joking.

"It would be a pleasant surprise if so-called "small government" Republicans and Tea Partiers supported getting government out of our heads."

Wouldn't it tho!
Although I would suggest that some on the left take a good hard look too -- California is not a bastion of either the "small government" Republicans or Tea Partiers, and they let a chance slip by because the proposed law as written was a farce.

Regardless, the federal government's drug laws are just a joke, as is the war on drugs is a total waste of time, money, and lives.

Anyone with any intelelctual honesty will never be able to square marijuana laws with those of ciggies and alcohol.
Just cannot be done.

Legalize it, tax it, and enjoy it.

It was in the middle of BJs post.

I could see some Tea Party members agreeing that the federal government should not be enforcing what should be a state issue.  Not likely to ever change tho becauae the federal government drug laws are alreday on the books, and it would be damn near impossible to change them at this point.  Hell, even California couldn't get those votes.

Obama's Justice Dept. has stated that it will not prosecute under federak law those who comply with a given state's med marijuana laws.  That is, if it is legal at the state level for medical purposes, feds leave it alone.  NORML keeps stats on which states have med laws on the books.  But contrary tales from the field (so to speak) indicate that the feds are not stopping enforcement but do seem to be targeting larger operations.  Time will tell whether they keep to that promise.  And who is to say what will happen if a more conservative administration (GOP or Dem) comes into power down the road.  I don't see Hillary Clinton declaring that pot is now legal!!  Yay!!!!

What Holder did say right before the elections is, the feds will continue to prosecute any attempts by states to legalize any pot outside medical.  That was clearly aimed at California, but there are a number of other states in the country that have been loosening their pot laws, and a number that are discussing outright legalization.

Really is a shame.
2010, and it is still like Reefer Madness!
