Interesting to see SRV in Mick's top ten.

I heard Mick & Jerry saw SRV at a club in Texas and eventually helped Stevie get his career going.

For a pair of musicians who still seem to love blues music so much, they manage to all but ignore it on record and in concert in recent years.

I went ahead and downloaded the songs I didn't already have, which was most of them and made a Glimmer Twins Favs mix.  I slapped on Slim Harpo's Shake your Hips on the end to fill up the disc. Nice complilation, although the reggae songs are a little out of place.

This is one of the songs Keith mentions "When Did You Leave Heaven" I also saw it in a Clapton documentary, he was influenced by it too.

Back in 200?, Mojo Magazine put out an issue and the accompanying CD
was called "The Devil's Music: Keith Richard's Fave Tunes"...hand picked by Keith
as the music that influenced him...none of the RS song list is on it...
It was a great mix of Blues and old RnR...i would play it all the time at my bar...

Not that they had to be in his TOP 10...but one would think a few, at least...

In concert they have left more of the straight blues out in their last 25 years.

However, on ABB with Back of My Hand they show they can still put it out and pull it off more authentically than all the rest even in this day and age. Nobody did it better then, or now than them.

That real and rootsy blues number of a song is timeless.

Interesting that Keith calls Little Walter's version of "Key to the Highway" the best ever, yet The Devil's Jukebox features Big Bill Broonzy's version.  Perhaps Mick was involved in the selection for Jukebox.

I remember in an interview once where Mick said, in response to a question by the interviewer I think about why he (on his solo records) doesn't do more blues, said that it would be enjoyable to do a cover of blues songs with the Stones or something like that. I've waited ever since for that record he hinted at. Although I love his versatility and the Stones wouldn't be anywhere close to the Stones without it, people tend to forget what a deep understanding of the blues that Mick has. It's a shame because lots of people try to play the blues, but very few sound original. That a guy from Dartford can sound authentic- even more so than Keith- is quite remarkable.

Good call on that Keith comp, PA.

The CD was included in the December 2002 issue of UNCUT.
Nice interview, and some great pictures, too.
