Chris Robinson's fave Stones songs

Alert Board Moderator about this Post!

...well he ended up selecting 15...

...

"As a kid, the Black Crowes frontman wasn't a Stones fan — but he adored the Byrds: "I came into [the Stones] because of the Gram Parsons association. They were dirty and funky and smart, and there was a 'we just don't give a fuck' attitude I loved."

1."Midnight Rambler" 1969
A woman told me years ago that she saw the Stones in '72 and masturbated when they played "Midnight Rambler." I was like, "It's a song about a guy breaking into a house and raping somebody!" How dark and weird, and yet it's an incredibly powerful piece of music.

2."The Worst" 1994
A great Rasta song by Keith off Voodoo Lounge. I can hear echoes of Parsons, too.

3."Tumbling Dice" 1972
The most quintessential, coolest rock & roll song ever made.

4."Wild Horses" 1971

5."Let It Bleed" 1969
One of those songs that makes you feel like being bad. That's what rock & roll is for sometimes.

6."Monkey Man" 1969
Jagger at the end transforms it into crazy music, like Link Wray crazy or Little Richard crazy or Syd Barrett crazy.

7."Time Is on My Side" 1964

8."Can't You Hear Me Knocking" 1971
You can hear 400 years of European and African music in one little "wa-na-na-wa-na-na-da-da-da-da" here.

9."Shine a Light" 1972
It's a beautiful roots/gospel-type song. There's a great juxtaposition in the verses and chorus between redemption and salvation.

10."She Smiled Sweetly" 1967

11."Jiving Sister Fanny" 1975

12."Coming Down Again" 1973

13."You Got the Silver" 1969

14."Memory Motel" 1976

15."Memo From Turner" 1970

Thanks for posting.  Diverse list!  Only near-head-scratcher is Memory Motel, but to each his own.   Let's all be real - could any of US pick our top 10 fav. Stones tunes, have it published, and NOT want to edit it the next day??

Love me some Jiving Sister Fanny and some Memo From Turner

I saw them cover Torn and Frayed. Surprised that didn't make his list. Love the crowes.

Who stole this one? (Seriously)

'Memory Motel' would probably be in my top 10 as well.  Loads of bigger head scratchers than that - The Worst at #2 (a good song, but #2???), Jiving Sister Fanny (great hook, but the lyrics sound like a work in progress)

Agree with the wanting to edit your top 10 the next day, but most of these remain constant or just bubbling under:

Gimme Shelter
Midnight Rambler (Ya Yas)
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Moonlight Mile
Let It Loose
Winter
Torn & Frayed
You Can't Catch Me
Memory Motel
Continental Drift
Slave
Tumbling Dice
Stop Breaking Down
Where The Boys Go
If I Was A Dancer (Dance Pt 2)

(Oddly, nothing from either Some Girls or Beggars Banquet, even though they're both in my top four Stones albums)

I'll admit, him listing "The Worst" made me go listen to the song - I almost forgot the tune!  No Sympathy, No Expectations, SFM from Beggars?  Yeah, I couldn't pick 10. Just for the hell of it,
Loving Cup
All Down the Line
Brown Sugar
Torn and Frayed
Midnight Rambler
Winter
Star Star
Dance Little Sister
Wild Horses
You Got the Silver
Crazy Mama

Of course, this is all studio - there are countless live covers I could add.

This is too difficult. My top 10 would change depending on mood. I'm currently listening to Exile so alot of it will probably feature, but say I was listening to Beggars Banquet, then the ten would change.

However, my undisputed number 1 is:
Tumbling Dice!   I'll try to follow on from there
2. Brown Sugar
3. Jumping Jack Flash
4. Gimme Shelter
5. Shine A Light (at the time being)
6. Sympathy for the Devil
7. Rocks Off
8. Bitch
9. Sweet Virgina (only cause I've currently got it on)
10. Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)

See how it's all very Exile-centric? It's based on that general era at least. Give it a week, and this'll be a different list entirely (with Tumbling Dice still no.1 though)
Thats why I have to give Robinson credit for having a good mixture rather than just going with tracks from one era that he has listened to recently.

I could see ANY songs from Exile making a top 10 list.  Even Plundered.

Since I posted some of Chris doing his favorites, here he is doing on that's not on the list (though Rich said in an interview, "I love that song!")

Wish he had added commentary to all 15 tracks. Interesting characterization of "The Worst" as a rasta.

Good read Gazza, thanks.

But The Worst has reggae feel?

I guess the song is actually lofty, liket reggae?

I don't think he means "Rasta" to be synonymous with "reggae."

Cant think of any definition for the term 'rasta' that isn't related to Rastafarianism.

An odd description, for sure. Its one of the most out-and-out country songs the Stones have ever recorded.

Pretty much pure Bakersfield sound, and a million miles from Trenchtown.
