P..
Probably don't listen to as much new music as you..but I do very well.
Look forward to your blog.
I've a lot of favorites this year.

Right now, like Gazza, "The Promise" is seeing the most playing time with me and far surpasses any other of my favorites.

but, many others are right up there- Band of Horses, the National, Ray Lamontagne, Arcade Fire, Jakob Dylan, Josh Ritter, Mumford and Sons, Black Keys, She and Him.......
I am sure there are more but that is just off the top of my old brain

Justin Townes Earle's 'Harlem River Blues' is probably my second favourite album of the year.  Was supposed to be seeing him this Friday, but he's in rehab so it's postponed until January, all being well.

The Band of Horses one is up there too.

I think David Rawlings Machine's 'A Friend of a Friend' came out late 2009, but I only discovered it a few months ago. I've really got into him and Gillian Welch a lot since seeing them play what was for me the gig of the year in September, on the same bill as the excellent Old Crow Medicine Show.

Looking forward to upcoming new releases from Social Distortion and Lucinda Williams.

The Suburbs - Arcade Fire
Stone Temple Pilots - Stone Temple Pilots
American VI: Ain't No Grave - Johnny Cash
Come Around Sundown - Kings of Leon

Congratulations - MGMT
Dark Night of the Soul - Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse
High Violet - The National
Exile Reissue

These are just off the top of my head. There's still so much more I'm still getting to.

To quote the title track from Mavis Staples' brilliant new album, "You are not alone", pdog.

Plenty of good music out there by artists new and not-so-new.
Aside from Mavis, some other recent favorites:

Springsteen - 'The Promise' is simply an embarrassment of riches.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Thirty-odd years on, 'Mojo' ranks with their best work, imo.

Peter Wolf - Another lifer still making great music. 'Midnight Souvenirs' is the goods.

Neil Young - 'Le Noise'. Just a man, a guitar and Daniel Lanois' subtle production. Great stuff.

Freedy Johnston - 'Rain On The City' is the latest bittersweet offering from this sorely overlooked artist.

Jason & The Scorchers - 'Halcyon Times' is the raucous return of these old Nashville punkabillies.

JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys - Chrissie Hynde's romance with a guy half her age might have fizzled, but the end result, 'Fidelity!', sizzles.

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - The eponymous third album from a band that just keeps getting better. A very good live act, too.

Los Lobos - 'Tin Can Trust' is another slice of Rock & Roll, Blues, Tex-Mex and R & B from East LA's finest. Love these guys.

Robert Plant - 'Band Of Joy' furthers his exploration of Americana. Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller and Darrell Scott lend some great support.

Fistful Of Mercy - A likely one-off from Dhani Harrison, Ben Harper and Joseph Arthur, but a damn good one.

Patty Griffin - Like the Staples album, 'Downtown Church' is a shot of old time religion. In truth, the closest I've gotten to church in years.

Johnny Cash - 'Ain't No Grave' purports to be the last American Recordings release, and is a fitting final sendoff to The Man In Black.

Willie Nelson - 'Country Music' is the first "traditional" album from the man that calls Methuselah kid. T-Bone Burnett and a bunch of session aces make it sound as timeless as Willie hisself.

Ronnie Wood - 'I Feel Like Playing'. I feel like listening. Often.

And there were those "new" 'Exile' tracks...

Furthur merits a mention, too. While they didn't release any albums, Phil, Bobby and friends did release soundboards of all their shows.

Those are some of the things that got eartime this year.

I'm also looking forward to Ryan Adams & The Cardinals' double set 'III/IV'. Hope it'll be out soon.

I'll second Tin Can Trust by Los Lobos. It's superb.

For those who like the classic sounds by new artists, may I recommend.

Black Mountain's latest "Wilderness Heart" is top notch as well. It has a great 70s hard rock/psych sound (think Floyd crossed with Sabbath, a dash of Purple, and a  pinch of Fleetwood Mac and Zeppelin.) without seeming like pastiche. Sample Track "Old Fangs" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmbmOVunEcc

Then there's Endless Boogie's "Full House Head". The band's name is no lie.
Sample track "Mighty Fine Pie"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOqRz8dyrPA

More awesome psych heaviness, courtesy of Dead Meadow on their latest "Three Kings", this band is tight- Sample track "That Old Temple" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqyHd_3-JQE

Croweology by The Black Crowes is also very enjoyable. Sample track, the reworked "Morning Song"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXtYvit715I

I also dig Grinderman "2", as Nick Cave enters his Keith years. Sample track: "Palace Of Montezuma"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30U1-5-k1P4

But my favourite of the year is without a doubt The Jim Jones Revue's "Burning Your House Down".
Unabashed rock'n'roll, indebted to greats like Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, and played with passion.
If this doesn't get you up and dancing, you're dead.
Sample Track: "Shoot First" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k_cd44iBuU

all I can say, is get this now... this album has so many influences and it's coming from all directions... at first I'm thinking, this is cool, and I shouldn't like it. I'm liking it alot, and I'm telling myself, the next song will suck... but it doesn't, it keeps getting better.

This is two great vocals, male and female, great songs, lyrics and excellent playing... and for the people concerned with sound, I'm not hearing anything that makes me gringe, like brickwalling our loudness, but then again, I have to go past the music to find that....

great album. buy it now, but it for a friend you want to impress...
