This Day in Music: October 26th
10.26.2010
Brought to you by This DayinMsuic.com.

Born on this day:

1946, Keith Hopwood, guitar, Herman's Hermits
1951, Bootsy Collins, bass, James Brown, Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy's Rubber Band
1963, Natalie Merchant, singer, 10,000 Maniacs

1961, Bob Dylan signed with Columbia Records.

1962, The Rolling Stones, (known as The Rollin' Stones), and consisting of Keith Richard, Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, pianist Ian Stewart and drummer Tony Chapman record their first demo tape at Curly Clayton Studios in Highbury, London. They recorded three songs, Jimmy Reed's “Close Together,” Bo Diddlley's “You Cant Judge A Book By The Cover” and Muddy Waters' “Soon Forgotten.”

1965, Queen Elizabeth II presented The Beatles with their MBE's at Buckingham Palace, England. According to John Lennon, The Beatles smoked marijuana in one of the palace bathrooms to calm their nerves.

1979, AC/DC appeared at The Mayfair, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, supported by Def Leppard. The bands were booked to appear the night before but after a fire at the venue in the afternoon, the show was canceled.

1984, 19-year-old John D. McCollum killed himself with a .22 caliber handgun after spending the day listening to Ozzy Osbourne records. One year later, McCollum's parents took court action against Ozzy and CBS Records, alleging that the song “Suicide Solution” from the album Blizzard of Ozz contributed to their son's death. The case was eventually thrown out of court.

1991, legendary American promoter Bill Graham was killed when the helicopter he was flying in hit a 200' utility tower in Sonoma County, California.

2004, Elvis Presley came top of a list of the highest-earning dead celebrities. Forbes.com listed the Top 5 dead music earners; 1. Elvis Presley $40m (£22m), 2. John Lennon $21m (£11m), 3. George Harrison $7m (£3.8m), 4. Bob Marley $7m and at 5. George and Ira Gershwin $6m.

2006, Andy Taylor quits Duran Duran just five after their successful 2001 reunion. It was the second time he had left the group. For more on this story see This Day in Music Spotlight.

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

The Beatles smoking grass in palace bathroom to calm their nerves???? depending on the grass, since when does Marijuana calm you're nerves?? I've smoked grass that was so strong it made me paranoid, then I needed about 6 beers to calm my nerves.
