It doesnt mention 'lead' guitarists. Measuring greatness by solos or how many notes someone knows kinda misses the point.

A lot of great rock n roll is primarily rhythm based. As any Stones fan can attest to.

What was it Keith said - 'you cant go into a guitar shop and ask to buy a 'lead guitar'..

Keith's at number 4 - you'd be hard pressed to argue that he's the most technically proficient guitarist in the history of the Stones, let alone one of the top 4 in the history of rock n roll.

But he's still worthy of that accolade, nonetheless.

I know these lists are meaningless space-filler, but it's actually not a bad one and is a good blend of the pioneers, the influential, the iconic and the the virtuosos - which is the point they're trying to make, I think.

(I'd have thrown in Cooder, Allmann, Townshend and Beck, myself - but no big deal).

I totally agree, a good guitarist is someone who plays both Rhythm & lead, of all the good guitarists there is, Townshend in particular, for playing Rhythm & Lead, I don't know why they would pick Johnny Ramone, he would be in 10 of the fastest rhythm guitarist of all time,  but as a guitarist??? they choose good when they put Hendrix at #1.
