Thanks a lot lefty!!

What about setlist and reviews?  Fuck you Gazza, Will ya? Somebody? Anybody?

Ouch!

Setlist:
Miss Judy's Farm
Had Me A Real Good Time
Too Bad
Ooh La La
I Wish It Would Rain
Maybe I'm Amazed
Flying
Cindy Incidentally
I'm Losing You
I'd Rather Go Blind
Pool Hall Richard
Stay With Me (preceded by impromptu blues jam)

Reviews by our friends Paulywaul and Beast on IORR :

Pauly :  I'm not going to post the setlist, because I can't recall it and I was rather more concentrating on this extraordinary spectacle unfolding in front of me, namely Ronnie some six feet away, driving the band, and on absolutely blistering form. And Ian Maclagan ... divine.

I'm going to leave serious reviews to others that were there, my two cents worth is this: if you KNEW about this gig, have always loved the Faces, and made a conscious effort NOT to attend due to WHATEVER reason, then you should be kicking yourself. The music was sublime, and if you still retain a hangup about "no Rod" and "that bloke from Simply Red", then you "simply" should have been there to see and hear that bloke do THE most extraordinary justice to those delicious songs.

And it IS official, from the mouth of promoter Harvey Goldsmith himself, they WILL be touring in 2011. For 2010 it was yesterdays gig, Goodwood tomorrow the 13th, and a third one in Denmark.

Do NOT miss this band out and about - seriously.

Beast : I second paulywaul's every word - that was a stupendous and amazing gig from start to finish. Anyone who could have and didn't go should indeed be kicking themselves very very hard.

And the first newspaper review (which true to form, makes the story of someone who wasnt even there about to become a father again the main focus of the article)

Ronnie congratulates Rod Stewart
Wednesday August 11 2010

Ronnie Wood congratulated former Faces lead singer Rod Stewart on the news he and his wife Penny Lancaster were expecting another baby at the band's first reunion concert.

Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall replaced Rod, who chose not to rejoin the band at Wednesday night's gig.

Many fans of the 1970s rock group, known for hits such as Stay With Me and I'd Rather Go Blind, expressed surprise at the decision to bring in Mick as lead singer but he managed to win over the crowd.

Kicking off their reunion tour at a concert held by American Express at the British Music Experience at London's O2 Arena, Mick ran through the hits to rapturous applause and shouts of "best band in the world" from the crowd.

Playing to an audience of 400 people, it was an intimate gig for lead guitarist Ronnie, who went on to play for The Rolling Stones when Faces split up in 1975.

Ronnie congratulated Rod on the news he was to become a father again.

"Good luck to him, he's a great dad," he said.

Speaking before their performance, the rocker said it was "magic" having Mick sing with the band.

He said: "We do miss Rod but having Mick here is just unbelievable because it's one of those situations that you probably at first think wouldn't work but it's magic."

Mick, who is 15 years Rod's junior, added: "I wanted to be Rod when I was 12, who wouldn't? He's one of the greatest rock icons and we'll honour him tonight. But if he isn't doing it and someone else gets the chance to do it who's a fan, then why not?"

Rod’s former band takes the Mick at The Faces launch

By  Rick Pearson
12.08.10

...
Holding back the years: The Faces reform with Mick Hucknall replacing Rod Stewart

After 35 years away from the stage, The Faces are back — sort of.

Forced to accept that their original singer, Rod Stewart, can’t be convinced to rejoin them — at least, not without demanding the lion’s share of the takings — the band have done the only sensible thing: enlisted Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall instead.

For many, a poodle-haired crooner who once compared himself to Lord Byron  isn’t the natural replacement for a rough-and-ready rock singer like Rod (some fan forums have even taken to calling this new-look line-up The Red Faces with Cod Stewart).

So last night’s show at the British Music Experience — a warm-up before the band headline the Vintage at Goodwood tomorrow — was as much an audition as it was a gig: could Hucknall really pull this off?

From the opening line of Miss Judy’s Farm, the answer was resounding: yes. Unveiling a vocal with more gravel than a driveway, Hucknall’s rock’n’roll makeover was startling. If you closed your eyes — and closing them was recommended given how the group look nowadays — it could almost have been Stewart circa 1975.

Even so, the singer had to work hard during the 75-minute set. Indeed, if he’d pushed any harder during Maybe I’m Amazed, Hucknall might have spontaneously combusted.

The soul stuff comes easier to him. Squeezing every last drop of emotion from I Wish It Would Rain, he sounded every bit Stewart’s equal. The rest of The Faces, which now include ex-Sex Pistol Glen Matlock alongside long-standing members Ronnie Wood, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan, were authentically shambolic throughout. Endings were botched and verses missed.

Nothing, however, could derail old-time rock’n’roll numbers like Cindy Incidentally and Stay With Me.

If this was a musical audition, The Faces (and Hucknall) passed with flying colours.

Review: Faces Reunion Gets Lively Start in London

Full report: Mick Hucknall proves worthy stand-in for Rod Stewart

By Richard Dewey
Aug 12, 2010

Ronnie Wood sauntered onto a small stage at London's British Music Experience last night and asked the 400-odd guests, “Are you ready to hear some experimentations in rock and roll?” Faces then launched immediately into “Miss Judy’s Farm,” officially kicking off one of rock’s most anticipated reunion tours — albeit with Simply Red's Mick Hucknall standing in for Rod Stewart.

While there wasn't much in the way of "experimentations," the band and its new singer managed a fine feat anyway: Bringing the Faces back to life. "We do miss Rod," Wood said in a Q&A with fans prior the show, "but having Mick here is just unbelievable — it's one of those situations that you probably think wouldn't work, but it's magic." Hucknall quickly won over the crowd with his vocals on "Had Me a Real Good Time" and the rollicking "Too Bad." Despite the revamped lineup — Hucknall and Wood were joined by the Sex Pistols' Glenn Matlock on bass, and Wood’s son Jessie on rhythm guitar — and only a handful of gigs over the last 35 years, the group brought the raucous energy that defined their early days, slowing down only when Hucknall and Wood grabbed acoustic guitars early in the gig for a superb version of "Ooh La La" and a cover of The Temptations, "I Wish It Would Rain."

Other highlights: Kenny Jones's thunderous drum solo during "Cindy Incidentally," great interplay between Woods and keyboardist Ian McLagan, and searing solos from Wood on Paul McCartney’s "Maybe I’m Amazed," a track the Faces covered on 1971’s Long Player. The band wrapped up the 10-song set with a cover of Etta James’s classic "I’d Rather Go Blind." They took the stage again moments later for their encore, dedicating "Pool Hall Richard" to original faces bassist Ronnie Lane and closing out with their biggest hit, "Stay With Me."

Asked if we should expect new Faces material, Wood was coy: “It would be tough with our busy schedules — it’s all up in the air — but we could throw something together easily and quickly like we always did.”

Glad to see Ronnie in action again with The Faces, thanks for the pics & setlist, I thought for a second today's header was Jeff Beck, he resembles Ronnie quite a bit.

Glad to hear it was a great show but how long were they on stage? I see just a 12-song setlist.

All the reviews I've been reading have been positive and glowing, which is nice to see for the boys. Here are some excerpts:

- The Simply Red man proved he had the chops for this particular gig - vocally superb throughout, his energy added a new dimension to the band's back catalogue. His singing on Maybe I'm Amazed was transcendental.

- From the ramshackle opening of Miss Judy's Farm to the crowd-pleasing finale of Stay With Me, via Ooh La La, Had Me A Real Good Time, and Pool Hall Richard the new line-up visibly grew in confidence.

- This was good time rock'n'roll at its best, with Wood clearly revelling being at its raucous heart, trading licks with McLagan's rollicking keyboards throughout.

- Hucknall quickly won over the crowd with his vocals on "Had Me a Real Good Time" and the rollicking "Too Bad." The group brought the raucous energy that defined their early days, slowing down only when Hucknall and Wood grabbed acoustic guitars early in the gig for a superb version of "Ooh La La" and a cover of The Temptations, "I Wish It Would Rain."

- Against all the odds, one had to concede, it sounded raucous, and pretty fantastic. Wood, in the shadow of Keith Richards for more than half his lifetime, was here the star of the show.

- Hucknall was impressive on a singalong Ooh La La, and truly excelled on the blues/soul covers which would pepper a vintage Faces set, such as the Temptations’s I Wish It Would Rain and Etta James’s I’d Rather Go Blind.

- Everything rested, though, on the interplay between Wood, finally in pole position, and Ian McLagan, their silver-topped keyboard player, who tinkled stirring boogie-woogie stylings during Cindy Incidentally. Wood’s playing teetered between crunching riffs and, on the expansive prog-rock of Flying, stumbling explorations, fully re-igniting that essential part of the band’s original ramshackle appeal.

Ouch!

Don't know exactly how long the set was, but the BME advertised the show as a "mini-gig":

...

The legendary Faces return after an eventful hiatus with original members Ronnie Wood on guitar, Kenney Jones on drums and the glorious keyboards of Ian McLagan, with the addition of Glen Matlock (The Sex Pistols) on bass, and vocals from Mick Hucknall (Simply Red).

We're honoured that the British Music Experience was chosen to host the intimate launch gig by infamous 70s English supergroup Faces, performing their 'proper' first live show since 1975.

There will be a 45 minute Q&A session with the band members, followed by an intimate gig for 400 people for an hour.

Only 60 fans will be invited to attend the Q&A session at 7pm before the rest of the audience join for the mini-gig at 8.30pm.

Seems reasonable to assume the upcoming shows will be longer...

Apparently, the show was around 75 minutes and included an encore. Pretty cool for an intimate warm-up gig for 400 or so lucky fans.

Hucknall on vocals...for fuck's sake...so are the Stones gonna replace Mick Jagger with Avril Lavigne for the next tour?

I hope everyone who can live with this incarnation of the Faces has fun during shows, but IMO this lineup is ridiculous.

I understand the teeth gnashing by some longtime fans, but the bottom line is that it ain't what it was, it is what it is.

Rod Stewart wasn't willing, and sadly, Ronnie Lane is dead.

If the others want to get together and have a bash at it while they're still on the right side of the ground, I say let 'em...

If it keeps Ronnie off the piss, and playing "real" guitar, this can only be a good thing.

But it means at least another year before the next Stones tour.

I might lose interest by then.

I disagree. Though, had you asked me a day ago I would have wholeheartedly agreed. However, after seeing just how good Ronnie is playing, and frankly, how great Mick Hucknell sounds, I say more power to them! I will certainly attend a show when they come to the NYC area. Hucknell can flat out sing. His crooning past notwithstanding the guy sang with soul and has a great voice by all accounts. Plus this show seemed to light a fire under Ronnie's ass too. He sounded great. Not many bananas on that stage I'd wager.

Though it is a bit tough to wrap me head around the fact that Ronnie Lane is now being played by an ex Pistol, and Rod the Mod is now replaced by the foppish 80's pop crooner from Simple Red!

I just watched some of the clips...it's not for me. But Hucknall always gives me a sudden stroke of Tourette's since I was a kid in the 80s and it's not possible for me to get past that. I hope everyone that goes has a great time though...

Thank you for posting the clips - it certainly seems as if it was a wonderful concert. I have never disliked Hucknell as a vocalist and he performs with a genuine passion and commitment and like someone who really means what he coveys. Ronnie sounds sloppy but he's certainly playing, at least. Glen Matlock apears to be a good fit, too.

An early report from Paulywaul on IORR about the Goodwood show:

Myself, sssoul, and Beast have just got home from Goodwood. In a word - awesome. Wednesday's performance at the O2 Bubble was the warm up, tonight was the show. And WHAT a show. This is a band you CANNOT afford to miss as of next year when they tour. Tonights highlight was a tribute to Etta James, who Ronnie referred to as a "big round mound of sound", a tribute to Muddy Waters, and an extraordinary 5 minute solo encore consisting of slide work in open tuning and that incorporated the Stones' Prodigal Son among others. They played for one and a half hours, 22:00 to 23:30.

And you thought they were good on Wednesday night at the O2 ? Well they were on FIRE tonight at Goodwood. A peach of a show, one that for all three of us at any rate we will fondly recall as the first performance of the Ronnie Wood 2010 Renaissance period - truly !

Mick Hucknall needs no further comment. He has sold himself lock stock and both barrels as THE vocalist for the job. Simply superb.

This gig will be reviewed to death, the press were out in force, as were the photographers. We would be astonished if there's anything other than a resounding chorus of approval for the re-emergence of this band. Tonight's gig was outstanding.
