How often do you listen to Steel Wheels?

Listened to it in its entirety today. This is probably the only Stones album that doesn't move me at all. The album cover is boring and lame, the lyrics are completely pointless, the guitars are uninspired and thin, and the production is soulless with no dynamic sound at all. You can definitely tell that it was digitally produced. The only redeeming factors are the open-g riff of "Rock and a hard place" and "slipping away," which is a great, great tune.

Not to mentioned it was followed by their least rock n' roll tour. Your thoughts?

This makes young Joey sad .

Steel Wheels is a GREAT album   ****   ( " Terrifying "  is one of the Stones BEST songs as well as " Almost Hear You Sigh " )  . The live version off of ' Tokyo " The Egg " '90  ' is killer amd simply breathtaking .

I have a soft spot for that album because it was new when I was a lad who just discovered how great the Stones are. These days, I spin it probably once a year, if at all. Lets just say it's not one of their greatest. The only two albums I spin less are Bang and B2B. Bang is not even on my iPod. Steel Wheels is.

Great album and tour. 25 to 28 song set lists, filled with rock and roll classics like Bitch, Shattered, Brown Sugar, Start Me Up, Happy, Before They Make Me Run, Midnight Rambler, and Jumpin' Jack Flash. That tour was so rock and roll, many people credited it with saving rock and roll in the late 80's early 90's....Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes was one of the people singing the praises of that album and tour.

I think everyone in the band was very "on" during that tour, especially Mick. His voice was very powerful and he was extremely active on stage. But there's so much reverb in the sound, and the way everything is rehearsed and all the lights and people on stage take away the intimacy and rawness of the Stones, which to me is what makes 'em so special. Gotta say though, this version of "bitch" really rocks. Just listen to Keith's solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-clO9--xszc

AND JOEY!!! Some new material, I see. I like!

Loved the Steel Wheels tour.

A healthy dollop of new stuff mixed with nuggets like 'Ruby Tuesday', 'Play With Fire', 'Dead Flowers'...

And the 'Paint It, Black', '2000 Light Years', 'Sympathy' and 'Gimme Shelter' segment still blows me away.

But - "saving rock and roll" is a wee bit of hyperbole, imo.
Others might suggest that all the extra musicians marked the start of the "Vegas" Stones era.

1989 was a great year for rock and roll. Aerosmith's PUMP, Slowhand's Journeyman, Flowers in the Dirt by Sir Paul, and Steel Wheels. Steel Wheels was everywhere. The press was all over the album and tour, and news seemed to make magazine and tv show appearances for months afterward. The album was also radio friendly, and the stations in Philly, WMMR and WYSP, played cuts from it all the time.

Steel Wheels hasn't been in the CD player since I transfered my favourite tracks onto my i-Pod. To be honest, I really don't think it'll be getting another turn untill the time comes when my current i-Pod needs replacing.

As an album? It's OK. There are some very good numbers: 'Sad, Sad, Sad', 'Almost Hear You Sigh', 'Mixed Emotions', 'Slipping Away' etc. It is a lot better than some give it credit for.

Actually got this out a couple of months ago. I used to absolutely adore it, but i have calmed down now. It's ok. The 80's production ruins it for me.

But i still love "hearts for sale" & "Almost hear you sigh". And "mixed emotions" is ok too. RAAHP kind of goes no where, and oh my, the synth on it spoils it so bad!

Horrible, dated production mars what are a decent collection of songs. The mixes on the 'Monitor Mixes' recordings (first made available exclusive to Rocks Off four years ago!) are what I prefer to listen to.

Unfortunately they decided to mix the balls out of the songs.

Still some great moments. 'Continental Drift' is still one of my ten favourite Stones songs ever and "Almost Hear You Sigh" isn't far behind it - up there with 'Wild Horses' and the like as one of their finest ballads. "Slipping Away" may have become a bit over-familiar with being played frequently in concert down the years, but it contains one of Keith's best ever vocal performances. Jagger's singing also shows a return to form after the way he tended to bark and growl his way through much of the 80's.

Still a bit of affection for that era as it's the album many of us never thought they'd make again. Yet, two decades later, if they went just three years between albums we'd be saying "why so soon?"

Pretty sure Mick played RAAHP in standard...

I'm lukewarm on the album, more or less for the sonic-related reasons Gazza and others have mentioned, but the tour will always stand out as a highlight for me. First show, at age 13. The excitement surrounding the "reunion" was staggering. They were still a relevant presence on MTV.

Charlie Watts never sounded better, in my opinion, than he did in '89-90. After his brief phase as a junkie jazzer, he was a total monster.

1989 was a stones resurgence and it was seminal for fans. After a string of crappy Mick solos and fights etc..the hype during that period was exiting. But it has dated, mainly due to what others have said, the thin, tinny 80s sound. However, Sad, Sad, Sad and Slipping Away are two of my favorite Stones songs so it had merit. Overall, in retrospect, it sounds thrown together for the sole sake of touring.

One of the most underrated Stones albums. It's also their last album for me that was truly an album in the sense that the diversity of the songs work very well together and the progression as you listen to the whole thing is very smooth. As everyone has mentioned, the production killed the true strength of the songs. It still has magical moments though:

-Mick and Keith harmonizing on Slipping Away (why the live version always bores me because there is no Mick)

-Terrifying: one of their last riffs that carries throughout the song and one of Ronnie Wood's finest moments ever as a Stone with that solo (at least I think it's him).

-Continental Drift: a return to Morocco and a nod to Brian Jones.

-Almost Hear You Sigh: pure beauty

-Just the energy of being back together

I walked into a chain restaurant called Bertucci's the other day.  Opened the door, immediately
heard the sounds of Terrifying.  Folks I dined with looked at me enough to say "is this....?" where before they could
finish I said ...1989-Steel Wheels, where they all dug the cut.  Best jazzy-long hypnotic instrumental middle since CYHMK for me......
