How I lost my Aerosmith virginity

Alert Board Moderator about this Post!
So, after so many years and the longest wait ever, Aerosmith played Greece for the very first time last Sunday. And I still can't breathe normally  Grin

What can I say... Again all the stereotypes are true: yes, old bands do it better. Yes, the old rockers have it nailed down when it comes to playing live - no new band can work a crowd half as well as Tyler, Perry & Co. did two nights ago. Tyler's energy is an incredible sight to see - and will I commit blasphemy if I say I find it a touch more to my liking than Mick's the last few years?  Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! There I said it! Maybe I'm still under the influence  Cool But he's got that raw, rock 'n' roll sexual energy which looks so much wilder, more free and released than Mick's lately... I don't know. And Perry, GOD, Perry... Well, yes, the Keith influence is so huge it's hard to believe, from the look to the voice to the mannerisms - at one point, he hung his guitar on the side, approached the keys and started playing with one hand... sounds familiar?  Roll Eyes But hey, I don't think the Stones' huge influence over Aerosmith is a bad thing. I think it's a homage, it's great, I'm enjoying it. And they're such a huge, great band on their own merit, it would be unfair to disregard them as "poor man's Rolling Stones" like some do. Heck, I loved them. I'm describing them as if it's something new, I'm sure most of you guys have seen them live before... But I just fell in love  Smiley I want more.

Some photos I took:

I also shot quite a few videos, some turned out better than others, you can find them here if interested. I'm particularly fond of "Dream On":

P.S. And as if Aerosmith were not enough to have me entranced for days, I also saw Billy Idol live last Friday... *sigh* How much can a girl take! Don't know how many of you like him, but he's a fine performer if I've ever seen any... Some videos from his show on my channel too.

Haha thanks Voodoo  Wink
If you didn't know what had happened earlier this year with Tyler and his dramatic "I'm leaving" - "I'm staying" thing, you wouldn't have guessed. They were tight as a band and he kept hugging and kissing Joe Perry  Grin

I think he had developed an addiction to his painkillers after the accident where he fell of the stage (or it might be a nice way to say he's back on the good stuff, who knows!)

But he looked in an awfully good shape to me, running around like a madman, working the crowd, very passionate and in a good mood... Really, really healthy looking.

Great photos, as well that you caught them.
The set lists from S America & Europe are great.
The whole thing about Tyler leaving was just
a band member skirmish gone public.  It was
never going to happen.  He went to rehab recently,
and they are back in the groove.

The saga continues.......36 years ago last month they played at my high school.
Biggest thing to hit town.  My buddy's father was the principal @ the High School at the time.  He
was incensed that the band demanded cases of Schlitz & Jack Daniels back stage
pre-show.  My buddy, his sisters & brothers had a sit-down with the father, convinced
him there would be riots if the show did not happen.....the show goes on....

Although I don't care much for Aerosmith, the guitarists can play the hell out of Richards/Wood, and they actually work their ass off.  I cringe when I hear a KR solo, to Keefs credit, he's the best clubbed finger guitarist in the world. It  pains me to see Keef play, and I feel badly for him...

Hi  Dear FotiniD,

I have seen Aerosmith about 3 times...but not recently.   I like a lot of their music...hell, I even have Pandora's Box-Aerosmith box set.  ST is a great frontman...but Joe Perry brings me to my knees You rock! You rock! You rock!...what a smoking studmuffin of a man.

And, as always, I enjoyed your wonderful heartfelt review and awesome pics.

Btw, it looks like JP had "work"  done.

FG!

@ Nellcote: What a great story!  really? For them to play in your high school, how cool is that? I woul worship the floors they walked on  Grin And your buddy sitting down and convincing his dad, God!  Cool

@ Gorda: Hell yeah!

@ Scotfree: Sad but true (the first part of your post).  Undecided Well, in my book Keith has done so much that he's earned his right to just walk on stage if he wants, whistling down the wind. But it was great to see such a great interchange between the guitarists. Now if Woody can pull it back together and they can find that chemistry again... I'm hoping!

@ Sweet Virginia: Thanks SV! Oh, do they ever! I still can't sleep  Cool

@ Factory Girl: Haha, I knew you'd have a soft spot for Perry Grin And I totally understand! Now, for work done, I think they've both had their share - but funny enough, they looked way better to me than they do in photos and videos. Almost natural, I don't know.

I went to see the Aerodudes last night in Oakland. Wasn't planning on it initially, but won tickets from a radio station at the last minute. Sammy Hagar opened and did a good job. I normally object when people refer to laid back california crowds, espicially locally. But this was one seriously laid back crowd that didn't really get into Sammy even though he's a local boy. Having looked at Aerosmith's setlists from Europe and given some of their recent problems. I went in with fairly low expectations. But they shook things up right away. Opening with Rats in the Cellar. Nice gem from Rocks that didn't seem to go over well with those in the expensive seats. They did get excited for Love in a Elevator. Go figure. But all in all, considering it was my first Aerosmith show in probably10-15 yrs. The boys did a good job. Tyler sounded good. But it as Joe Perry and the band that really rocked. Perry even sang one number. Here's the setlist:

 Rats In The Cellar
Monkey On My Back
Love In An Elevator
Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees)
Eat The Rich
Pink
Livin' On The Edge
What It Takes
Janie's Got A Gun
Last Child
Cryin'
--Drum Solo--
Lord Of The Thighs
Stop Messin' Around
I Don't Want To Miss A Thing
Sweet Emotion
Baby Please Don't Go
Draw The Line

Encore:
Dream On
Walk This Way
Toys In The Attic
Toys in the Attic from last night. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiQHrnv664Q

(Show #109 of 2010)

This was a show I would be inclined to avoid due to location and extremely high ticket prices but Live Nation had a one day only sale with $10 lawn tickets so I just bought those figuring I could always just sell them at that price later. I just thought something else would come up as most big shows I make tentative plans for almost always get pre-empted by smaller ones closer to showtime.

I went to see Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats at Pershing Square the Saturday before and some people around me won tickets in a 100.3 The Sound raffle I didn't even know about. Reserved seats almost to the lawn and someone who looked like a park resident sold me his pair for $20. (***)

For the longest time there, using the new open seating ticketing program there were usually 1,800 - 2,000 available seats at any given time. High ticket prices and Aerosmith's drama and unreliability the last few years made this a really tough sell. Aerosmith has to play every show and turn in excellent performances this time around or they may very well be done as a major touring act in North America.

When I got there, there was a tent at the front entrance where people could trade vouchers for lawn tickets for $10, I saw one scalper beg an extra off a couple heading in. Then as soon as I stepped in the front entrance, Live Nation employees were hawking lawn upgrades for $10 and Tom Petty tickets for $20. So, even though it seemed the Terrace section hardly sold at all, creative papering and low cost ticket distribution was employed to fill the place up. When I was almost to the Terrace section, they were selling Loge upgrades but row UU so it wasn't worth it to spend the $10 to gain a few feet. Live Nation jacked the prices so high that no one wanted to buy tickets than devalued them so much it's hard to even appreciate the experience.

The whole midway area, which used to be just picnic tables was filled with corporate sponsors trying to pry as much personal information, and hopefully cash as you're willing to give. I signed up for 100.3 The Sound's mailing list while recounting the story of how I got these tickets, then got a free bottle of hand sanitizer and remarked that it sure beats $13 beers for getting my buzz on.

Cheap Trick was once my favorite band to go see but I had low expectations for seeing them a half mile away as the crowd slowly trickles in. They could have done an obligatory greatest hits set but instead played an hour set filled with rarely played fan favorites and deep cuts including my all time favorite On Top Of The World and the much underrated and underappreciated Lookin' Out For Number One. Guitarist Rick Nielsen's son Daxx played drums the entire set filling in for Bun E. Carlos who is taking the year off. Would love to see them do this exact same set in a small venue up close and at deafening volume.

I was at the far end of the venue and couldn't really make it thru the crush to the drinking fountains, that raccoons and squirrels probably play in when the place is closed, so I broke down and bought a $5 dollar lemonade, which in reality is what's subsidizing the cheap tickets. Yuck, too much sugar. They are now allowing in food and bottled water so I will keep that mind should I ever end up there again.

Finally the curtain dropped to the screaming intro of Back In The Saddle and it seemed like we were in for a classic Aero show. It was followed by Love In An Elevator which was okay, but the next 40 minutes were one 1990's single after the other. Some of these songs were good when they came out but are in no way timeless classics. I was getting so bored I was hoping someone would fall off the stage again.

At one point, Tyler tried the lame acapalla/sing along intro to What It Takes but the crowd just wasn't into it. He even remarked how the crowd doesn't want to sing and he can do it all himself. That should have been his clue how much people really care about those songs now.

Things finally picked up a bit with Mama Kin and Last Child though the occassional momentum killing ballad was thrown in. The second half of the 2 hour show, the longest they have played in California since the 2001/2002 tour, was filled with many long jams, probably to preserve Tyler's fragile voice including the rarely played Lord Of The Thighs. Unfortunately the guitars were buried underneath the piano on that song so I didn't quite feel it the way I should.

The only gimmicky part of the set was Joe Perry playing himself on the Guitar Hero game on the video screens before doing lead vocals on his cover of Fleetwood Mac's Stop Messin' Around.

The last 3 songs of the main set ran over 25 mins. Baby Please Don't Go had a nice extended jam but probably would have been better off earlier in the set as a lot of people suddenly remembered the horrid crush in the parking lot and started drifting toward the exits. Sweet Emotion still had the Joe Perry theramin solo in the middle. The actual song is a little boring the way they play it now so it's always interesting to see how they are going to jam it in the middle as they haven't played it straight album style since the 1970's. I would have rather they dropped a couple of ballads and Perry continued to make the squeely noises to see how many more people they could drive out of the venue.  Draw The Line closed ended with Joe laying his guitar against the drum riser and beating it with a belt.

The rear speakers were cut off for the encore so there was almost no volume which caused the lawn and terrace section seats to empty out even faster. They did the 2 songs they still absolutely had to do (Dream On and Walk This Way) before ending with Toys In The Attic, which would have been great if only I could hear it at a decent volume.

It was an okay show, especially since they played 2 hours instead of the usual 80-90 mins of the last several years so they could squeeze in more jams etc. Just wish they would do the complete Toys In The Attic or Rocks as promised last year. I would have to say as a fan who owns almost everything by both bands, Cheap Trick's set was a little more fulfulling as they were playing for their fans who cared to get a ticket and show up early as oppossed to people just reliving the glory days of MTV.

From what I could see of the parking lot, even leaving right before the encore is no longer fast enough to get you out quickly as I could already see the taillight backed up. Even though we were parked near the exit it look us about as long to walk from the rear corner of the venue across the parking lot to the vehicle and out of the lot as it did to get from Irvine to Burbank on the freeway.

What a horrible venue so I guess it's really no surprise they now have to rely on comps and $10 sales to fill the place up now.

(***) Seeing how easy people around me won tickets I knew all I had to do was show up early enough the next Saturday when The Tubes played and I would win something for myself. And I did, a pair of Joan Jett & The Blackhearts tickets. I already have a single for the same show but what the hell, winning tickets is always fun.

The new American Idol judging panel  — Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson — headed to Austin, Texas last weekend for two days of auditions, where the crew joined host Ryan Seacrest to watch hundreds of try-outs. Two cities into their season 10 audition tour, new judges Tyler and Lopez also talked about how they were adjusting to their new jobs. "Was I nervous doing this? You bet your booty," Tyler told Fox. "Season ten for American Idol  is going to be over the top, so it's hard for us to say 'Nope, sorry, you don't cut it,' because they well up, they cry, they make me cry."

Who Should Have Been the New American Idol Judges?

While viewers will have to wait until the January premiere to see the new judges' on-screen chemistry, Jackson, a judge since season one, promises that this year's talent has been the best yet. "The talent is better this season...I know we say it every time," Jackson said. "I think we've put through more people in these last two cities than we've put through in the whole thing, past seasons." Lopez estimated that at one point, 15 straight contestants were given the golden ticket to Hollywood Week. "Randy's been here forever, so he was a great help and a gauge. It was like, 'OK, who's coming in here? How does this compare?' But now were comparing from city to city, so now we're kind of getting a flow," Lopez said.
