The bottom line is this: we - I.E. England - are nowhere near as good as the U.K. tabloids making us out to be. Take away the handful of genuine talent and we are left with a fairly average, though be it, decent pool of players. Personally, I tire of the likes of Hurst and Charlton blabbering on about how this could be 'our year' etc. It won't be. We are behind Brazil, Spain, and Germany et al and always will be. The reason? Too many foreigners in our top-flight.

Personally Meg, I think we'll beat you, but not comfortably. The U.S. have decent array of players, many of whom perform in our Premier League.

Voodoo, why is this not a 'sticky'???

Just did the family sweepstakes and I got all the shitty teams that are there to make up numbers such as Algeria and Slovakia! The only team I have with half a hope in hell of doing anything is France and they are shakey to say the least. They seem to be a group of individuals rather than a good team. Plus, Dominech is a moron who uses astrology to pick his team! I'm fucked in other words....

I must be the only person in Ireland to be supporting the French!
( Northern Ireland actually but you know... I've got no affiliation to the Republic of Ireland but the
majority of people I know support them so I may be in for a bit of stick until they crash out in the Quarters!)

Australia are in group D and much like the USA/Eng game our first match against Germany looks fairly one sided on paper - however, if we can limit the damage against Ger. there is, apparently, some hope we can progress to the next round.

The pundits down here seem to think we have some kind of chance against the other two teams in the group - Serbia and Ghana - so goal differences could be crucial.

so our fortunes may well be decided with the first game - put up a good showing against Germany - with a win unlikely - a draw would almost be like a win - as long as we don't get flogged - because if we do we are going to be behind the 8 - ball ( excuse my mixed sporting metaphor) for the rest of the Group matches

Australia is a tough team to beat. The Aussies are by no means gonna win the cup, but no one likes to play against that squad. Mexico is, like the Netherlands, a dark horse at best. I think my side has the better team btw, but it's been a very long season for a lot of key players: Sneijder, Robben (currently injured but likely to return to the team a week from now) and Van Bommel were playing for the league, the national cup and the Champions League. But: if the coach can keep the group together (always a difficult task with the Dutch), there could be a party in the Netherlands a month from now.

Actually, now I think about it, alongside Best, the greatest player to have never played in the World Cup finals was Alfredo di Stefano.

And unlike Best he played for a country which was good enough to qualify. Two of them in fact. Argentina didnt enter in 1950 and 1954, he acquired Spanish citizenship in 1956 but Spain didnt qualify in 1958 and then he missed the 1962 finals through injury. (he even played a few times for Colombia but they werent in FIFA at the time). A bit before my time but he was one of the top half dozen players ever IMO. 49 goals in 58 European Cup games and five winners medals - quite somethin'.
