Absolute fucking robbery and another embarrassment for a billion dollar sport which refuses to move out of the dark ages and use technology which would have cleared that error up in seconds. Everyone but FIFA seems to want this.  You cant really blame the ref - if he doesnt see something, he cant give it. FIFA refuse to make his job easier.

Same now, Argenina Scored in a very clear off-side, shame shame shame

I don't understand the FIFA leaders. All those bad referee calls are making them look like fools. Besides, it's unfair to the winning teams too - it makes it look like they didn't deserve their victory.

Of course, I'm not saying this for the English goal, which was clearly invalid !

Excellent game once again ruined by the fuckwittery of the officials and thanks to the clowns at FIFA.

the irony being that it seemed that the referee knew he had made a mistake when the Mexican team pointed out his mistake on the big screen - yet he couldnt/wouldnt change his decision because he would have been using video technology to make the right call.

Ain't progress wonderful?

This World Cup has been a joke because of the referees. The ball is a superstar compared to the refs. Handing out red cards for nothing, disallowing goals, calling offside with people miles onside, not calling clear offside goals. How many mistakes can there be. In any organization, the sensible thing would be to say the CEO needs to go but when you have a the Blatter machine behind you, no one says anything. This has been a joke and a potentially great tournament has been utterly destroyed by the worst standard of refereeing I have ever seen.

Two matches, two major fuck-ups by the refs. And that idiot Blatter issues a statement right after the England-Germany match that says they stand by their decision to work without chipped balls that give a sign if they pass the goal line and that there's not gonna be revised judgements based on video. England was robbed and so was Mexico: Tevez was offside by 2 meters with that first goal..

I think Germany would've defeated England anyway, like Argentina probably would've won against Mexico. But we'll never know what would've happened if the ref in the first match would've seen the goal and if the ref in the second one would've called the first Tevez goal for what it was: offside. You get totally different matches. And that's the point. Losing a match in a fair fight is fine: ending up grumpy for an evening is usually all it takes. But losing a match because bunch of fossils refuse to acknowledge that living in 2010 has some advantages that will help the game forward just sucks balls.

Guus Hiddink said it today: Blatter has two options: admit Fifa is wrong or get the hell out of his office. Of course, that idiot will do neither. Time for the big football nations to make a stand.

Well this answers my question from last week about who will get screwed next.

Fans should just walk away from the sport until it gets cleaned up.  It's humiliating.

I agree, the calls were bad... but both teams blew it too... I know it sucks for fans... Mexico lloked downright terrible at one point, passing the ball right to Argentinians or just kicking the ball blindly... and I thought Germany played damned near perfect...

while were talking about it, how would the use replay? In the MLB, they have allowed it in a very limited sense for homeruns... but in the NFL, they stop the game, which already has enough timeouts, and the games take forever... the one thing I love about the real football, is a 90 minute game, is played in less than two hours, including the halftime break... have you ever watched a 4 hour american football game... the NHL seems to get it right with replay...
would they look at ball crossing the line fully? offsides, which is sometimes really close and subjective... and would an opposing player touch be looked at? so much to think about if FIFA uses replays....

Field hockey has a video umpire that monitors the match from the sidelines. He intervenes at bad calls. It hardly breaks up the matches.

Fans aren't gonna ban games. This is something the national federations must do: if the big markets tell Blatter to go fuck himself if he doesn't allow modern technology for the next tournament, we'll see a change. Fifa needs the money from the big leagues. Sponsors should do the same.

Won't happen, Alex. Restriction of trade under EU regulations and all that pc-bollocks.

Oh, I know it won’t happen, but it should. I may be wrong, but is there not some kind of restriction in the lower tiers, now? I.E. Championship, League One, etc?  Actually, also, were they not recently talking about a cap on foreigners for European competitions? For example: Arsenal could only field 4 non-English players?

If there are rules in place regarding international football and which nation you represent, then why can there not be in the domestic leagues? It’s all an utter nonsense.

Tiez. I take your points on board, but I am going to respectfully disagree with you, here.

@HTM: so you're against the use of video replay?

I'd be all for a cap of players from abroad. Ajax is in ruins because everyone that gives a decent pass will move to the bigger leagues because that's where the money is. No way you can build a team in a smaller country this way. At the same time you see problems with the English and the Italian teams: young players don't get a chance because the latest star from Holland, Poland, Belgium or Uruguay arrived. People like Bergkamp or Robben will always get a shot in a bigger league, but these days even the players that don't bring that much extra leave after a few years.

Uefa must think of a way to go around the EU-regulations: I'd say 3/4 of a team should be schooled within their own team, something like that. Probably won't work, but something should be done.

haha...

I'm pulling for Germany... my 2nd team...
very proud of my country's team... they did very well, at least after the 45 minute mark.

Are you of German ancestry ? If not, there is only one country you should be rooting for and it’s the nation who colonised your slab of land all ‘em years ago!

No, seriously, you guys did well and should be proud to have made it out of the group stages. Hopefully, your exploits will heighten the awareness and you’ll get more kids wanting to play the sport. Donovan and co have done more for U.S. the real football than brand Beckham could ever do.

didn't see your question... yes, my family is Irish on Moms side, 3rd Gen and German/Austrian on my Dad's side. I pull for germany after USA for international sports, then I pretty much cheer for the underdog or a team who has a player I like... I like the English bands, but not the sports teams... haha!

THIS WORLD CUP THINGY JUST ISN'T OUR THING

...
DOWN AND OUT: An England fan

Tuesday June 29,2010
By David Robson

TOMMY COOPER joke. A man goes to the doctor.

"Doctor, " he says, "I've broken my arm in several places."

"Well, " says the doctor, "don't go to those places."

This is the moral to take from this World Cup, not to mention the last 10 World Cups. "Doctor, England's hearts have been broken in several places." "Well, don't go to those places."

It's high time England stopped playing international football.

It sends a generally sensible nation stupid. We, unlike half the rest of the world, do not normally live in a state of borderline hysteria. But that's what we've just been through. It must not be allowed to happen again. England should just give it up, forget it and leave it to the poor suckers who really need it.

This isn't a new feeling for me. I've had it for years. In fact I can't remember why I haven't told you before. Because it's just not our thing. We're no good at it, it upsets us and there's no need for us to do it. As the millionaire businessman said when he'd missed yet another simple putt: "I've been very successful in business, I've all the money I'll ever need. I've a lovely wife, lovely house, lovely family, why do I keep coming to this golf club and humiliating myself like this?"

We have the Premier League, which is the richest and most popular in the world, watched and relished everywhere from Bel Air to Beijing; Manchester United is the most famous club on earth; David Beckham by far the biggest thing in global football.

He knows what's what: he went through the whole tournament in South Africa without taking his waistcoat off. Why? Because he knows if he had played, he would be a disappointment for all concerned.

OTHER countries play in this World Cup thingy because they need the money or the glory: they're failed states, dictatorships, new (Slovenia, Slovakia) or else international football's the best thing they've got (most of Latin America). The US was in the World Cup but they only go because they know it doesn't matter - whether they win or lose at the real football is of no importance to any of the population.

None of this is true of England. We have the beating of the Germans at some things; it just happens that, give or take one exception, it isn't World Cup football. Let's take them on at cricket, rock music, cheese making, fashion, morris dancing, monarchy; in fact anything but football, motor cars and sausages.

I am more concerned for the humilaited ordinary folk of this country than I am for the feelings of David Cameron. After all, he's paid to be humiliated. Nonetheless watching the Germany match with Angela Merkel, as he did, cannot have made for a happy afternoon.

Sportswise, the Americans are people who know what's what. They concentrate on sports nobody else plays. They don't have to worry about being stuffed by Algeria or Slovenia. They play baseball and call their cup final the World Series.

Nobody else in the world is involved, which is what makes it great. What they call "football" is American football. Nobody else plays it.

The English have often been slow at getting out of things they aren't very good at any more. It took about a hundred years to realise the empire was not much cop and we'd be better off not sending chaps to far-flung parts to get sunburn and malaria and bitten by tsetse flies.

The secret of happiness and success is simple: stick to what you're good at, do it in the place where you do it best and don't get delusions of grandeur. When great-looking women everybody fancies decide they want to be appreciated for something else, they come to grief.

They're loved for their beauty but they want to be loved for their brains. Bad idea.

This is the moment to disband the whole England football operation.

Comrade Rooney must rue the day he got picked for England - go back to Manchester where you're a legend.

That's where you make people happy and that's the business you're in.

Only one exception to this "no England" rule can be considered. We aren't too bad at home - 1966 went well and Euro 96 was good - but we haven't beaten a major country in the knockout stages of the World Cup abroad in the last 44 years. If the 2018 World Cup is in England, maybe go for it. If not, forget it.

- Daily Express

Gazza, do you think england is just a sore loser... I mean jeez... only one team, one country will win it all... and there's alot of talent out there. Look how mnay countries don't even qualify. I hope you don't agree with the media, they are just doing what they do best... be assholes. This talk of quitting because you can't win, is way lamer that defeat!!! I hope you disagree... IMO, the problewm is, most of the Englsih player, and other teams like france and Italy, have too many overpaid asshole superstars... Field a team of hungry no names, who love the game, and you'd be surprised... they'd probably do better!
