Cup seems to be won by luck in equal proportion to skill due to poor quality officials every time it is played.  Fans seem to prefer this element of the game over the potential delays associated with reviews and getting the call right.  Sad, sad, sad!

Which country will get screwed next?

did you see the USA game... it's ok to mug players in the penalty zone and they get the foul...

Right, guy from Slovenia had a bear hug on an American and no call. That ref isn't qualified to call a 10 year old's game....Let alone a WC game. piss off

We now have a few vuvuzelas at the office, thanks to a guy who made the trip to South Africa. Those things really are terrifying! I'm pretty sure the whole building hates us.

Ernie Els will be playing in the second last group with Tiger at Pebble Beach today.  I wonder if someone will blow a vuvuzela in Tiger's backswing?  That would start a torrent of F-bombs for sure, LOL!

Will the luck of the Irish be enough for McDowell today?

Actually Els is playing with Phil Mickelson today. Let's hope their are no vuvu's on the course and good luck to Phil.

Well...entertaining match from Brazil and Ivory Coast yesterday. French ref was perhaps the worst appearance I've seen during this tournament: missing a double hands ball before the second goal, not giving red cards to two players from Ivory Coast. I guess he desperately wanted to get more attention than his national team.

I double checked to see if the French squad didn't wear orange shirts btw, since the national team of my country has a long tradition to uphold in ruining tournaments in the way France does now.

Yes, shame shame shame, also a clear corner was missing and the worst thing was that after the double-hand before the goal (breaking Maradon's record LOL) he was joking with the player asking him if that was his shoulder instead!

Worst referee so far

Ouch! Oh no! not you again That was clever

This is old news, but I just found out, so it's NEWS to me!

Javier "El Chicharito" Hernandez is going to be playing for a British team called "Manchester United".  Apparently, it's a big thing.  The whole transaction cost £10 million British pounds!

Where's the best football?

All the teams now have two matches completed, so far the best football is in Latin América, specially South America:
  • Except for Honduras, all the Latin American teams are on top of their groups
  • Except for the USA and Honduras all the American teams are on top of their groups
  • All the South American teams are heading their groups
  • Today all the latin countries won (Portugal 7-0, Chile 1-0 and Spain 2-0)

The problem with these group stage matches is that the strong countries face opponents that do no play to win. If a team gets through the wall of defenders early, chances are you'll see a decent match (see Portugal yesterday, Germany in the first round of matches) but if they don't you'll get games like Spain-Switzerland, Netherlands-Japan or Brazil-North Korea.

Results aside, I also see the difference between most of the European teams and those of South America. Somehow the Euro's look more tired.

how many of these players are coming right from other tournaments and very active leagues? I don't follow close enough to know... we just UEFA, BPL just ended not too long ago, Italians Leagues too... I know Argentina just wrapped up a season... is it possible some players are just not rested and also not used to these teamates...? and others are just tight and have jeeled with their teams...

Hey Pdog, let me tell you this, when a player is selected to be in the national team they are "recluted" before and leave their league matches, but anyway, many of the national teams played "friendly matches" before the world cup

Every major league ended a few weeks before the championships started. Especially the players of Inter and Bayern Munchen should be worn out: they played their national league, national cup and Uefa Champions League til the finals..thing is: most of the South American stars play in the big leagues (England, Spain, Italy) so they should be just as tired.

So there must be some differences in the way the teams fill their days...

LOL Gorda, Manchester United is probably the most important football club all over the planet, I think it's the most successful too, the wealthiest, one of the oldest and the one with more budget with Real Madrid close to them. BTW, even that England is British the proper way to call them is "English"

The situation with France was an accident waiting to happen, but I don't think anyone expected the trainwreck it is now. I'm more surprised of the situation with England. Their coach Capello is a force to be reckoned with in football...but I guess that's the lack of results talking through the players.

Normally the Netherlands have this kind of crap: they fucked up tournaments that way in 1990, 1994, 1996, 2002. Even in 78 it was a mess because Cruyff (the greatest Dutch player of all time) refused to go to Argentina. But they reached the final in that one, so it probably doesn't count.

Certainly not the wealthiest anymore, Gerardo - £1 billion in debt thanks to their American owners using them to finance the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Not even the richest in England either since Roman Abramovich bought over Chelsea a few years ago..or even the richest in Manchester, as Manchester City would be the richest now since being bought by a Dubai sheikh a couple of years back.

Real Madrid and Barcelona would be the only clubs who could really be 'bigger' than United though (although United have a bigger following worldwide and would be the most recognisable club name/brand in world sport). Real Madrid would certainly be the most successful club side in the world, however (9 European Cup wins). Liverpool and Manchester united both have 18 league title wins in England (even though Liverpool have been shit for 20 years), but Liverpool are 5-3 ahead in European Cup wins.

Keep that chin up Voodoo. The offensive part of Diego's team is the greatest on this tournament, but their midfield is okay-ish, and I'm not too impressed with Argentina's defense. Even Greece cut through it a few times tonight, so Mexico can do that too. If your team manages to cut the lines between Messi and the rest, there's a chance.
