One of the logistical difficulties in combating the Gulf oil disaster has been finding housing for the thousands of workers brought in by BP and its contractors to work on cleanup and containment operations. Many of the coastal communities, especially in oil-soaked Louisiana, are sparsely populated and don't have the ability to accommodate a sudden influx of people. Enter "flotels."

Many workers have been housed in floating hotel/motels —  structures similar to trailers or shipping containers stacked on top of each other on a barge.

BP told a New Orleans Fox affiliate that the flotels were useful for keeping workers close to cleanup sites, thereby eliminating travel time.

But some aren't happy about it. In fact, a group of fishermen decided to go on strike in protest of their accommodations, and some workers have expressed concerns about safety.

"We're on strike, so we're not going to work," Jules Dag told WDSU, an NBC affiliate in New Orleans. "I'm not living on no quarterboat," Dag said. "When I signed up, the agreement was we lived at a motel or somewhere they supplied us to live."

Dag said that some workers have no choice but to accept lodging at a flotel because they've yet to be paid and have depleted whatever savings they had as a result.

"We ain't been paid yet," Dag said. "We've used almost everything we got to live out here already. Forty days, we ain't seen nothing yet. What we supposed to do for money?"

One worker compared the living conditions to jail, saying, "If I wanted to be in prison, I would break the law and go to jail." Privacy is scant, typically limited to little more than a retractable curtain, with common areas for showers, eating and leisure activities. The flotels are powered by generators, with each pod holding 12 bunks. The close quarters made another worker concerned about disease.

A fire even broke out inside a flotel in Plaquemines Parish on Tuesday night, injuring five cleanup workers. A spokesman for the local sheriff's office said the injuries were minor, though — mostly smoke inhalation.

BP did not respond to The Upshot's requests for comment on the latest developments.

Just don't ask Nigeria for help. They've had an oil leak for like the last 20 years.

He has promised to play golf in every state along the gulf coast before the election to demonstrate leadership and empathy!  His secret service caddy will be checking the sand traps for oil clumps before raking.

so one would think that BP would have suffered in sales with all the bad publicity etc? Revenue was up 34% as just reported along with the Heyward firing. Amazing........

Oops, just when it looks like BP has their stuff together, somebody else fucks up:

NEW ORLEANS – Oil is spewing from a damaged well north of a bay where officials have been fighting the spill from the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Coast Guard says a tow boat called Pere Ana C. hit the wellhead near Mud Lake early Tuesday. No injuries were reported.

The Coast Guard did not know who owns the small well or how much oil has leaked. But a sheen has been spotted in the lake. Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts says oil is spewing from the wellhead.

Coast Guard Lt. Brian Sattler says a helicopter has been dispatched to survey the area, which is accessible only by boat.

Mud Lake is part of a network of bayous and lakes north of Barataria Bay, an ecologically sensitive coastal estuary where authorities have been fighting waves of oil from the Gulf spill.

Gulf Coast Residents File Personal Injury Suit Over Oil Dispersant
Tresa Baldas

07-29-2010

The first personal injury lawsuit involving the chemical dispersant Corexit 9500 has surfaced in Alabama, where two Gulf Coast residents and property owners allege that BP PLC's use of the product is causing people to get sick.

In Wright v. BP, filed July 26 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama, the plaintiffs claim BP has dumped millions of gallons of toxic chemicals into the Gulf of Mexico to disperse and sink crude oil to the bottom of the ocean. The plaintiffs allege that one method by which the company has applied Corexit 9500 -- spraying it from airplanes in the middle of the night -- has caused Gulf Coast residents to suffer breathing and gastrointestinal problems, as well as property damage.

According to plaintiffs attorney Jere Beasley of Montgomery, Ala.'s Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, whose firm filed the suit, more than 100 people in recent months have received emergency room treatments for nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath and extreme headaches. Those problems, he alleges, are the result of exposure to Corexit. Hundreds more have visited their personal doctors for similar problems, he said.

"It's our judgment that the oil is extremely, extremely bad, but the chemicals could be worse in the scheme of things," Beasley said. "They're spraying it from the air and ... it's not supposed to be on shore."

In the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that BP has used Corexit "to lessen the public reaction to the oil spill by forcing the oil to the bottom of the Gulf ... and to hide the massive amounts of oil at the bottom of the Gulf."

The lawsuit also names Nalco Co., which manufactures Corexit 9500. The suit, which seeks class action status, is asking for compensatory and punitive damages for bodily injury, emotional distress and property damage as well as "all appropriate medical monitoring relief."

The personal injury suit comes one month after a group of Louisiana oystermen filed a federal class action against BP and Nalco claiming that Corexit 9500 "is four times more toxic than the oil itself." In that lawsuit, Parker v. Nalco Co., the plaintiffs do not allege personal injuries.

According to both suits, Corexit 9500 has been illegal in the United Kingdom since 1998, when it was found to be harmful to the food chain.
BP declined comment on the suit, but a BP spokesman noted the company has not used any dispersant since the oil well was capped on July 15.

Nalco officials were unavailable for comment, but the company defends the use of Corexit on its website: "COREXIT 9500, the only dispersant Nalco is manufacturing to help break up the oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico, is a simple blend of six well-established, safe ingredients that biodegrade, do not bioaccumulate and are commonly found in popular household products. The COREXIT products do not contain carcinogens or reproductive toxins. All the ingredients have been extensively studied for many years and have been determined safe and effective by the EPA."

In May, however, the EPA urged BP to stop using Corexit 9500 because of its toxicity.

Pamela Anderson, PETA, rescue orphaned Gulf dogs
August 2, 4:06

...
Popular television personality and animal rights activist Pamela Anderson gets a kiss today in NOLA.

Today, the media was present when the ever-ebullient former Dancing with the Stars contestant and notorious animal rights activist Pamela Anderson was in New Orleans. Anderson, PETA's honorary director, paid all the expenses to have some dogs relocated to Virginia.

The transportation of the pooches is reminiscent of what occurred after Katrina, but on a smaller scale. Sadly, with so much devastation in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit nearly five years ago, thousands of domestic animals were abandoned and or orphaned.

But today was for celebrating because Anderson was in NOLA to support PETA as it transports the dogs -- ]most of which are homeless due to their former masters' post-BP-oil-spill impoverishment -- from overcrowded conditions there to safer havens in Virginia.

A notorious softie, Anderson said she'd adopt two of the dogs on the spot and name them Gina Lollobrigida and Bardot!

The rest of the dogs-almost 50 adult dogs and puppies-are en route to PETA headquarters for adoption.

No word yet on whether the actress will have a similar fondness for the local wildlife - dolphins, sea turtles and the like!

New Report Says New Orleans Is Ready For a Transformation
Written by WGNO ABC26 News

New Orleans is on a path to transformation. That's according to a new report slated to be released Wednesday morning by Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

The report, called the New Orleans Index at Five, says after Katrina, we are poised to rebuild a city that is safer, more sustainable and more resilient than ever before. The nearly 200 page document has been compiled by the Brookings Institute and The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center.

One of the things that will help our city succeed....the new master plan, which the report says promotes economic opportunity and shows us ways to "live with water." It also praises the sweeping changes being made to the criminal justice system.

But it wasn't all good news. The report does point out that many troubling trends were made worse after Katrina....the educated workforce has shrunk and we have more poor people living in the suburbs than ever before.

But bottom line, local leaders have plans in place to shape up New Orleans and make it a better community than what it was before 2005.

The report also notes that this area has had three major "shocks" in five years....Katrina, the recession and now the oil spill and while it would be hard for any community to recover, New Orleanians are incredibly resilient.
