BP (NYSE:BP) has temporarily halted their attempt to "Top Kill" or plug the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, saying there was far too much drilling fluid escaping while being injected into the well.

The assumption is they are revamping their techniques and will continue on once they're satisfied.

A technician stated it wasn't a major challenge, and "We're still quite optimistic. It is not assured and its not a done deal yet. All of this will require some time."

Plans are to continue pumping the fluid around midnight local time.

This must be what you're talking about:

>>Obama is not going to be able to afford to wait out for August for a drilling solution.
He must view this event as an attack, place a battle hardened general in charge
of this operation, chain BP scientists to report directly to this command center to
make action happen.  This is going on far too long. <<

Nellcote is talking about using the military to help stop the leak, Monkey Man talks as if BP intentionally created this disaster.

You, Pdog, talk as if I'm taking sides in this matter.

I think Nellie has an idea that should be considered, but I think MM went a bit overboard in his analogy.

I believe that every means reasonable and possible should be used to stop the leak, then prosecute all responsible parties who are found at fault, whether that be BP, Haliburton, MMS or whoever else was involved in that operation.

Somehow, though, I don't see premeditated mass murder as being one of the charges that will be brought up.  Smiley

I posted an email that was sent to TPM regarding the situation earlier today.
It mentioned that everybody that is knowledgeable in this type of thing is already on board. Has been since day one.

The military wouldn't have a clue. All they can do is blow things up and kill.

I want to see the MMS in front of a Congressional panel, but when I think about it, what can we reasonably expect from Congress.

We're all fucking serfs. All that matters is money. There will be no punishment of the guilty. Meanwhile, today 150 high school kids were sentenced to 5 years in jail for selling pot to their friends. 5 years they won't get back, and their friends? They bought pot from someone else. Tomorrow? 150 more. It's fucking insane.

We're all teabaggers now. Vote !!!!!

While agree more visits would be nice, they wouldn't fix anything... I think it's really funny you guys want to comapre Bush's mismanagement to Obama's mismanagement...
There hasn't been a mass human displacement or disruption to infrastructure... This problem doesn't require the same solution, b/c it is a different and far worse in some ways event.
The blame for this isn't about the reaction and response, the blame is with those who weren't safe and ignored their responsibilites, and we can't change what has happened, and we know, that those responsible will get away with it... I know it's always fun to make this a partisan issue... blame goes directly to govt., govt. agencies and BP and all the subsidiaries and contractors... there's no political party more or less to blame... the fucked upidness is evenly spread, and it's a shit sandwhich we are all eating it...

The crime here is that no one ever thought with hundreds of rigs offshore anything as gross as this would happen. It was only a matter of time. Like why was there no master emergency plan in place that kicked in within 24 hours? Ludicris that all concerned from bigoil to govt's at every level assumed this could never happen or chose to keep taking the money and worry about it later. Where are all the "drill baby drill" drones now? And we sit and play the blame game between white house and BP when in fact there all assholes just waiting to let another disaster cripple our country.

Regulation, the dirty word some folks don't like... and if it was actually enforced.... maybe there's a really weird irony, that those who are calling for the Federal Govt. to lead the charge and take control, are the same voices that say Federal Govt. is trying to take charge and takeover....

NEW ORLEANS – A thick, 22-mile plume of oil discovered by researchers off the BP spill site was nearing an underwater canyon, where it could poison the foodchain for sealife in the waters off Florida.

The discovery by researchers on the University of South Florida College of Marine Science's Weatherbird II vessel is the second significant undersea plume reported since the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20. The plume is more than 6 miles wide and its presence was reported Thursday.

The cloud was nearing a large underwater canyon whose currents fuel the foodchain in Gulf waters off Florida and could potentially wash the tiny plants and animals that feed larger organisms in a stew of toxic chemicals, another researcher said Friday.

Larry McKinney, executive director of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, said the DeSoto Canyon off the Florida Panhandle sends nutrient-rich water from the deep sea up to shallower waters.

McKinney said that in a best-case scenario, oil riding the current out of the canyon would rise close enough to the surface to be broken down by sunlight. But if the plume remains relatively intact, it could sweep down the west coast of Florida as a toxic soup as far as the Keys, through what he called some of the most productive parts of the Gulf.

The plume was detected just beneath the surface down to about 3,300 feet, said David Hollander, associate professor of chemical oceanography at USF.

Hollander said the team detected the thickest amount of hydrocarbons, likely from the oil spewing from the blown out well, at about 1,300 feet in the same spot on two separate days this week.

The discovery was important, he said, because it confirmed that the substance found in the water was not naturally occurring and that the plume was at its highest concentration in deeper waters. The researchers will use further testing to determine whether the hydrocarbons they found are the result of dispersants or the emulsification of oil as it traveled away from the well.

The first such plume detected by scientists stretched from the well southwest toward the open sea, but this new undersea oil cloud is headed miles inland into shallower waters where many fish and other species reproduce.

The researchers say they are worried these undersea plumes may be the result of the unprecedented use of chemical dispersants to break up the oil a mile undersea at the site of the leak.

Hollander said the oil they detected has dissolved into the water, and is no longer visible, leading to fears from researchers that the toxicity from the oil and dispersants could pose a big danger to fish larvae and creatures that filter the waters for food.

"There are two elements to it," Hollander said. "The plume reaching waters on the continental shelf could have a toxic effect on fish larvae, and we also may see a long term response as it cascades up the food web."

Dispersants contain surfactants, which are similar to dishwashing soap.

A Louisiana State University researcher who has studied their effects on marine life said that by breaking oil into small particles, surfactants make it easier for fish and other animals to soak up the oil's toxic chemicals. That can impair the animals' immune systems and cause reproductive problems.

"The oil's not at the surface, so it doesn't look so bad, but you have a situation where it's more available to fish," said Kevin Kleinow, a professor in LSU's school of veterinary medicine.

Remember when that fat drug addict who has a talk radio show accused left wing eco-terrorists of blowing up the rig, thne later said that the oil was natural and the sea would just take care of itself and absorb it naturally...? He's a funny guy!

I know it's always fun to make this a partisan issue... blame goes directly to govt., govt. agencies and BP and all the subsidiaries and contractors... there's no political party more or less to blame... the fucked upidness is evenly spread, and it's a shit sandwhich we are all eating it...

This is the natural truth, not partisan.  Hey, when Jim Carville turns on the President of his party, it's all gone.

WWL radio in New Orleans is reporting that people in hazmat suits were bussed in to Grand Isle for Obama to see "cleaning the beach."
It's also reported that those same people were bussed away again after Obama's departure.

Bobby Jindal doesn't like "Big Guv'mint", but he doesn't mind asking them to get him out of the mess his big oil buddies got him into. ....
I asssume the irony in this is lost to those on the right.   Ouch!

Seems like big oil buddies have bestowed O with donations to his coffers as well.
It's ok for Rhody to ask for federal aid in April for the flooding-it's what states do...
Jindal's problems will dwarf any which this country has seen
Oh, and for those keeping score.....
O has been to the Gulf 2 times in 39 days vs. Bush visited the Gulf 7 times in 36 days.
Go figure?

While agree more visits would be nice, they wouldn't fix anything... I think it's really funny you guys want to comapre Bush's mismanagement to Obama's mismanagement...

Isn't Jim from NOLA or nearby... probably hits close to home... I heard some of his comments yesterday.

Yes indeed he is from the area.
Here's hoping O does an about face for the poor people of this region, and for that matter the country.
Where the spill happened is Federal land, so more should be happening quicker.
