Touring and Deluxe Archive Releases

Didn't Mick once say, he wouldn't dig into the archives, unitl the band was done doing major tours?

If they do decide to do another big tour or even something more scaled down (doubtful) would you rather see archival releases or new material or maybe something else... by that I mean like a acoustic album of old stuff or a covers record type thing....
thougts, ideas or specualtion... this is a big open topic, so let it fly.

I think the master plan has indeed run it's course.

I'd prefer archival stuff...

Recordings from 1972.
Film or Video from 1975.
Some Girls Super Deluxe.
Official release of Handsome Girls.
Etc..

None of the band seem the slightest bit interested in doing anything together. The GFC probably didnt help. I just think they should announce a farewell tour and be done with it. Stadiums, arenas, clubs - whatever. Just finish it before it gets too stupid.

I'd ideally like them to make new music, tour behind it AND put out archive releases.

If Dylan, Young, Springsteen, The Who and others can simultaneously evolve AND embrace their past then there's no reason why the Stones can't.

If I had to choose just one of the above for what they SHOULD do however, it would be to start an archive project - but only on the proviso it's done professionally and properly, not the half arsed way it's been done prior to 2010.

That said, if they were going to make one more album and do one more tour, for purely selfish reasons I'd be quite content for them to postpone any archives projects until immediately after it's completed. I say selfishly because artistically I dont think they have any interest in making new music and musically there's not a lot to be gained or achieved from future large scale touring.

I love idle fanboy speculation, so here it goes, I could care less about another modern Stones album and the mandatory stadium tour, oldies act that follows. I'm all for something smaller, more intimate from them, but how cool would a Keith Richards "Cash/American recordings meets the Toronto recordings by way of Stripped" -type project be? Think hurricane/cocaine, just Keith and his guitar singing songs, telling stories and whatever, maybe with some minor acoustic complements and a reggae vibe. Seems like something that would be right up his alley these days, it's not like he's got anything else to do. If done right it could probably even be a hit

Yeah, I think the Stones have been there, done that too many times when their heart wasn't in it .....for the machine to keep going.

I'm fine with an archival phase.....

the archival phase is long overdo, but could actually be really good for them from a creative stand point

Dont forget, they are all very old and very wealthy. They have absolutely nothing to prove. To us or themselves. Out of all of them, only Jagger has the ego to still try to compete with U2 & who ever is flavour of the month.

Charlie will play drums anywhere/anytime, and he aint fussed. Keith seems to be as far away from writing a song & playing guitar than an accountant from Hobart. He just is content to be a scruffy pirate. And Ronnie has all sorts of hassles, none of them involving the guitar.

They would never bother doing a small theatre tour. Never! Like a supermodel, these boys dont get out of bed for less than $10,000. Silly people can dream of no-frills shows with rarities and blues, but it aint never, ever gonna happen. To get the organisation on the road, to get the wheels greased, means a big pay cheque. Means big crowds paying top buck/peso/ruble/shekal.

To tour behind a 38 year old record is stupid. 95% of the crowd would only know 2 songs (TD & Happy), and maybe 3-4% would go "What is this country music shit? I want Satisfaction, damn it!" And dont forget, they've already toured Exile. It was back in 1972. Remember?

Why do it again? Fuck, why not do a a album of swing standards? "Stones do American Standards Vol1" Why not tour with an orchestra? Do a Circus De Soleil show! Stones on ice?

I dont think there will be new music. I cant see the point, and more importantly, Universal probably dont either. I mean, wouldnt it be humiliating if this Exile redux sold more than ABB?? And they wouldnt exactly "tour" behind this, really, would they? I mean, they didnt tour behind ABB. What we get? 3 new songs? it was down to 2 ABB tracks real quick, wasnt it?

The WHo last year were great. Still powerful - but they were not The Who. Even Townshend admits they are a cover/tribute band. Unlike the Stones, they need the money - CSI franchise's not withstanding.

Just do a farewell tour before it's too late. Before Ronnie dies or Keith's fingers seize up.

And do it with an orchestra!

Plundered My Soul was surely good enough to ressurect from the vaults and if there is financial success and praise from the fans & music industry, I think we will see more of the vaults opening up! The new music is good but the old stuff is great! So opening the vaults and touching them up is working well so lets hope for more to come! A new album could be made from the old stuff and there is no reason why some of those songs shouldnt be played live on the next tour! I still believe in another tour, remembering KEEF's words at the 05 Press Conference when someone asked if ABB was the last tour. KEEF's answer was WE WILL CONTINUE TO TOUR UNTIL ONE OF US DROPS DEAD ON THE STAGE! So if that actually happens one day the touring will be officially over. Until then, it aint over!!!!

Well, we dont really know what 'Plundered My Soul' was originally like as there's a fair amount of overdubbing on it.

I'd like them to put out archive material, but I dont really wish to see them making a habit of putting new overdubs on 40-year old tracks. There's a 'Frankenstein' element about that, and it doesnt genuinely reflect what they were recording from that period, if (as in some cases on the Exile reissue) theyre even writing 2009 lyrics to instrumentals from around 1970. It also makes them look redundant and spent.

I think its OK with Exile because there probably werent too many finished songs left off it (as it was a double and most Stones albums around then had 9-10 songs instead of 18), but I'd seriously like to think there are on average 3-4 finished (or near finished) songs left off most albums which are of decent enough standard to be released 'as is' in the context of a archives/anthology release.

If they're going to do box sets and archive releases etc, then they should be genuine documents from the period in question. If they're going to overdub ancient recordings for future releases, then release them as 'new' material as they did with Tattoo You.

My wishes:

Rolling Stones: The Basement Tapes!!!

Just give me 3 volumes...(you can pick the dates/time ranges)

A residency in 2 or 3 locations...London RAH, / NYC, RCMH / and Vegas MGM ...each for about 4 weeks,  3 or 4 shows a week ...low overhead...plenty of down time...opportunity for fans to see them, even more than once...and a possibility for some REAL change-up in the setlist.

And all this re-issue of EXILE stuff can only add to Ron's woes. Brings back memories amongst most fans/critics that they were better with Taylor.

For what it's worth I was talking to a marketing guy from Universal over the weekend and he seemed to be quite confident that there will be a new album in 2011, and a tour in fall 2011-2012. Apparently the boys want to do an even fifty years in the business. I personally have a hard time picturing it, but then again I wouldn't have a called a new Exile song on the radio in 2010 either.

There are still plenty of suckers about!

Bernard Doherty's press release in September 2009 effectively stated that the Stones are making special plans to commemorate their 50th anniversary in 2012.

I absolutely think they'll tour from 2011-12, health & insurance issues permitting. If they make a new record to 'coincide with' it (I'm reluctant to use the word 'promote'), IMO it'll only be because they've exhausted other more nostalgia-orientated avenues.

I would expect SOME kind of retrospective (with either previously released or unreleased material, or a mixture of both) to tie in with it around 2012 too.

If they are not up for touring I can't see them spending anytime delving into the vaults. I too believe they want to try something for the 50th in 2012 but as time ticks on I have my doubts to it becoming a reality for far too many reasons. Hope for the gazillionth time to be proven wrong.

i'm hoping they go balls out, as in out in a blaze of glory... not a big bang (pun inteneded)... just hopefully a good set of shows, good new/old music... it would suit them, after all they've done... the last thing we need, is another set of DVd's of live stuff and live albums...
