True, LJ.  Those were tough years for Bills fans.  And no one remembers that they were a good team and how close they came to winning a couple.  They are just the team that got muffed 4 times straight.  Shades of Gallo.  Shades of Norwood.

Remember Bill Cowher's first year as head coach?  He turned the Steeler around, and had the number one seed in the playoffs.  The Bills came to Pittsburgh and played at a mad Three Rivers Stadium.  They handed the Steelers their ass on a plate.  That was a great team from Buffalo.  If only they could cut Ralph Wilson....

Has it REALLY Been 20 Years? Bills Superbowl Flashback.

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Has it really been 20 years since the Buffalo Bills had their first of four consecutive Superbowl appearances?  Yes.  It was January 27, 1991 when the Bills faced the New York Giants.  An you know the rest of the story.

Who can forget.  Just think of the names Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith, Andre Reed, Cornelius Bennett, James Lofton.  And, of course, Scott Norwood.  The phrase "wide right" is a part of culture in western New York.

Do you remember what made the Bills team special?  The Bills had a very talented team with 9 Pro Bowl selections on their roster. Their defense was led by defensive end Bruce Smith, who recorded 19 sacks and won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award.  Behind him, 3 of the Bills starting linebackers, Darryl Talley, Shane Conlan, and Cornelius Bennett, were selected to the Pro Bowl. And on special teams, Pro Bowler Steve Tasker was a major threat, forcing fumbles, delivering jarring tackles, and blocking kicks.  The Bills finished with a 13-3 record that year before entering the playoff run.

Sparing you all the details, the Bills went to Superbowl XXV, their first of four consecutive appearances, and lost the game in the final minutes.  Late in the fourth quarter. the Bills forced New York to punt and took the ball at their own 10-yard line with 2:16 remaining. Kelly then led them down the field with a mix of scrambles, short passes, and Thomas runs. Buffalo drove to the Giants' 29-yard line, setting up Norwood for a 47-yard field goal attempt with eight seconds left. However, his kick barely sailed wide right, sealing New York's victory with 4 seconds left.

And 20 years later, four Superbowls later, Buffalo still awaits a Superbowl trophy.

Perhaps unfairly, Norwood is the Buckner of the NFL.

Yeah, the Bills put up some great teams in the past.  Juice and the Electric Company - what an amazing season.  Tragically tarnished by Simpson's terrible acts.

No longer a real team in Buffalo.  Now they've become the kind of team that signs people like Owens and Merriman without even thinking about how absurd those players are.  Quick fix, like smoking crack cocaine.

Here's a controversial move: the Green Bay Packers have decided injured players won't be in the NFC team photo.

According to a team spokesman, "It was a team decision driven by the sheer number of players on IR. Our primary focus is to get the team ready to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. Every decision we make is about trying to win a world championship."

UPDATE:

The Packers have just reversed their decision to ban injured players from the team photo, NFL.com reports, and will change the date of the photo to accomodate.

EARLIER:

The Packers have 16 players on injured reserve, per NFL.com. At least two players have said publicly they're unhappy with the decision. Both linebacker Nick Barnett and tight end Jermichael Finley took to Twitter to knock the move.

Barnett tweeted: "Kinda sad. Found out basically IR guys can not be in team picture. .. It's kinda sad to think.. Just goes you injured yourself you not part"

Finley tweeted: "I never trip (about) anything, but the way IR players are getting treated not cool."

Story continues below
ESPN.com contributor Ross Tucker argued getting to the Super Bowl is all about the team, which makes the decision absurd.

The team photo is expected to be taken next Tuesday at Cowboys Stadium in Texas, Yahoo reports. Green Bay will play Pittsburgh in Dallas on Feb. 6.

Such filth has no place in a thread dedicated to The Steelers Nation/Planet.

Super Bowl coming up, featuring NFL Defensive Player of the Year - The Nation's own Troy Hamo Polamalu.

which team is the bigger choke: bills or vikes?

LJ, i'm not sure howe many times the bills have choked besides the four straight losses at the big dance, but i can say that the vikes are right up there with the most cursed franchises in sports. ok, we're not at the same level as the cubs, but damn, we're close.

seriously. i just can't take this anymore! if the fudge packers win, especially the year after the biggest choke of them all, i might just keel over and die.

Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports interviewed several players, including Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward, about concussions in the NFL for Tuesday's edition of GQ.

Ward, who criticized the league about player safety earlier in the season, ripped the NFL again for being hypocritical.

"To say the league really cares? They don't give a fuck about concussions," Ward said. "And now they want to add on two extra games? Are you kidding? Come on, let's be real. Now that these new guidelines are in place, you'll see more and more guys lying to doctors to stay on the field."

He also pointed out that the league hasn't mandated the new helmets which are supposed to prevent concussions.

"If they're so worried about what concussions will do to us after our careers, then guarantee our insurance for life," he continued. "And if you're going to fine me for a hit, let the money go to veteran guys to help with their medical issues."

The NFL received a negative backlash from the players after it was announced in October that players will be suspended for dangerous and flagrant hits.

In December, Ward added his two cents and said the league doesn't care about the safety of the game.

It is now officially a Stone Cold Lock:
Forget Punxsutawney Phil -- Madden 11, EA's pigskin prognosticator, has emerged from its burrow just in time to make its annual wintery pick.

And it's going with Pittsburgh.

According to the simulation, the Steelers storm back from an early fourth quarter deficit to narrowly beat the Green Bay Packers, 24-20, nabbing their record seventh Vince Lombardi Trophy. With five catches for 111 yards -- including the game-winning TD -- Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace wins the MVP.

EA Sports has been using Madden to predict the Super Bowl winner for years now, and the famed football franchise is proving eerily good at it. Not only has Madden correctly picked six of the last seven winners, it's actually been quite close on the final scores in a few of them.

Super Bowl XXXVIII
Madden: Patriots 23, Panthers 20
Actual Score: Patriots 32, Panthers 29

Super Bowl XXXIX
Madden: Patriots 47, Eagles 31
Actual score: Patriots 24, Eagles 21

Super Bowl XL
Madden: Steelers 24, Seahawks 19
Actual score: Steelers 21, Seahawks 10

Super Bowl XLI
Madden: Colts 38, Bears 27
Actual score: Colts 29, Bears 17

Super Bowl XLII -- WHOOPS
Madden: Patriots 38, Giants 30
Actual score: Giants 17, Patriots 14

Super Bowl XLIII
Madden: Steelers 28, Cardinals 24
Actual score: Steelers 27, Cardinals 23

Super Bowl XLIV
Madden: Saints 35, Colts 31
Actual score: Saints 31, Colts 17

So it botched the underdog Giants victory in 2008, but check out the scores of the two recent Pittsburgh wins. Madden might not be Grays Sports Almanac, but with that kind of track record, we're not inclined to bet against it.
