New Book Sheds Light on the Stones, Clapton, the Floyd, Janis and Jimi

Andrew Vaughan

Sam Cutler was tour manager for the Rolling Stones during the tragedy at Altamont, when a Hells Angel killed a man in the audience while the Stones played on stage. In his new book, You Can't Always Get What You Want: My Life with the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead and Other Wonderful Reprobates (ECW Press), Cutler tells his side of the story, finally putting to rest some of the myths surrounding one of the most infamous moments in pop music history. Cutler also paints vivid picture of the golden days of rock and roll, telling fascinating tales about his dealings with legendary figures like Jimi Hendrix, the Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, The Band and Eric Clapton.

Talking recently to www.Yourgigs.com.au in Australia Cutler reflected on some of his own favorite music memories: “Seeing the Stones rehearsing when we stayed at Steve Stills’ house in L.A. We lived in that for a few weeks, and seeing them just in the wine cellar, in the basement, all playing together; that was pretty amazing. The Band were fantastic, used to watch them play and rehearse, amazing group. The Allman Brothers were, too. I remember when Pink Floyd first started. I mean they were friends. They were students in London. They were all going to be architects and then music intervened.”

Sounds like a interesting book, at least he was there, coming from the horse's mouth sort of thing, I don't think he was a real doper or drinker, so his memory should be acturate, at least from seeing him in "Gimme Shelter" he seemed to have his head together as far as being to stoned goes.

I thought that this book came out 2 years ago in hardback.  If I am correct hopefully someone will post a review here before I fork out for the 2010 paperback edition.
