Sam Cutler was tour manager for the Rolling Stones during the tragedy at Altamont, when a Hells Angel killed a man in the audience while the Stones played on stage. In his new book,
You Can't Always Get What You Want: My Life with the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead and Other Wonderful Reprobates (ECW Press), Cutler tells his side of the story, finally putting to rest some of the myths surrounding one of the most infamous moments in pop music history. Cutler also paints vivid picture of the golden days of rock and roll, telling fascinating tales about his dealings with legendary figures like Jimi Hendrix, the Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, The Band and Eric Clapton.

Cutler reflected on some of his own favorite music memories: “Seeing the Stones rehearsing when we stayed at Steve Stills’ house in L.A. We lived in that for a few weeks, and seeing them just in the wine cellar, in the basement, all playing together; that was pretty amazing. The Band were fantastic, used to watch them play and rehearse, amazing group. The Allman Brothers were, too. I remember when Pink Floyd first started. I mean they were friends. They were students in London. They were all going to be architects and then music intervened.”
