Interesting Party Doll Video

I'd never seen this before and thought if others hadn't, it might be interesting. It does evoke a little bit of a horrible Ned Kelly vibe but still enjoyable.

This is as good as anything Mick's written. If this was on Exile, people would talk about it like a classic. I admit the production on PC didn't help but the song itself is a gem.

Always liked that song. At the risk of repeating myself, I'm absolutely convinced it was written as a 'farewell' to his relationship with Keith - read the lyrics from that perspective and see what you think.

You used to be my party doll
But now you say the party's over
You used to love to honky tonk
But now the honky tonking's over

Now life is a bitter thing, my sweet
Now life is a mystery to me
Love's pain, I ain't buying
Love's strange, I keep flying, flying, flying

You used to be my party doll
But now you want to live in clover
You used to be my number one
But now those salad days are over

Times change but the fascination stays
Love wins but the passion just fades
I'll drink to the dancing days
I'll drink to your crazy ways
Through the whiskey haze

Face the music, face the truth
Chase that fleet sweet bird of youth
Grow up sweetly, grow up strong
Hear the heartbeat in my song

Love's pain, I ain't buying
Love's strange, I keep trying, trying, trying

You used to be my party doll
But now you say the party's over
You used to love to honky tonk
But now those dancing days are over
You used to be my number one
But now you vanished in the ozone

I have the video of that 'Deep Down Under' gig, but I honestly dont recall seeing this clip in it. Then again, its probably over 20 years since I watched it.

One of the few good things to come from working with Dave Stewart.  Cool video, too, thanks for posting!  Much better than "Let's Work.."

And Jimmy Ripp kind of looks like Tom Waits.

Good song, great find.
Interesting theory Gazza, but I always think of Jagger being too consumed with the women in his life then with Keith.
I think its the other way around, I think Keith is rather possesive of Mick...

I never thought about it in that way Gazza but that's because I just thought it was another ballad. Now that I actually see the lyrics like this, I completely agree with you. These parts that I left are almost a direct reference. If it's not, then it's a very odd coincidence. I seem to remember that Mick did say something at the time to the effect of Keith trying to forever live like he was 21 or something like that. This may have been the more personal message because as everyone knows he publicly pointed to Kow Tow and Shoot Off Your Mouth as messages to Keith.

Well, its pretty much accepted that 'Shoot off your mouth' and 'Kow tow' on the same album are aimed at Keith, so its feasible this could be as well, although written in a more affectionate manner.

The reference to 'honky tonk' is quite obviously a Stones one.

Its not that unusual for Jagger and Richards to write songs which could work subliminally as being about their own relationship - Worried about You, all about you, sweethearts together, etc. - and around the late 80's they were BOTH writing songs reflecting on their fractured friendship.

I think that too Gazza, the song absolutely refers to Keith who used to write about his relationship with Mick in You Don´t Move Me,Struggle and maybe How I Wish as well. I don´t know if their partnership was based on hate at the time but they sound pretty nostalgic in those tracks.

Funny you should mention 'How I Wish' because at the time I thought that could have been written with Mick in mind as well. I never thought about 'Struggle', but thats a good point.

I think at the time we were all scanning their lyrics for subliminal messages addressed to each other. The ones the press concentrated on were the negative ones like You Dont Move Me, Kow Tow and Shoot off Your Mouth - but there were a few more wistful and poignant ones that tended to be overlooked, especially if they appear to be written about women and people don't think of there being a subtext. (I always thought 'Throwaway' could have been spun that way as well).

I think  Mick's more consumed with himself than with any women - and in the late 80's the relationship that was causing him most angst was his one with Keith.

They may as well be a married couple, anyway. When Keith compared them to one and said 'we can't get divorced', I dont think he was that far off the mark.

They've been an item now for 50 years. Maybe it's time for gold rings on them both.

I love that album, it was the musical backing track to a really cool and free time in my life, and I always loved this particular song but had never seen this video, thanks so much for posting....

Personally, I think that fans obsess much too much about hidden meanings and subliminal messages in their idol's songs and that the artists would piss themselves laughing most of the time if they ever read their fan's thoughts. Sometimes songs are simply songs. My very very humble opinion....

But no doubt at all that the connection between MJ and KR is longer and stronger than many couples I know...

Normally I'd agree, but in 1987-88 it was quite obvious they were conducting some kind of pissing contest both in the press and on record - and both made it quite public regarding the latter.
