Lunch-only beer policy prompts Carlsberg strike

COPENHAGEN – Scores of Carlsberg workers walked off their jobs in protest Thursday after the Danish brewer tightened laid-back rules on workplace drinking and removed beer coolers from work sites, a company spokesman said.

The warehouse and production workers in Denmark are rebelling against the company's new alcohol policy, which allows them to drink beer only during lunch hours in the canteen. Previously, they could help themselves to beer throughout the day, from coolers placed around the work sites.

The only restriction was "that you could not be drunk at work. It was up to each and everyone to be responsible," company spokesman Jens Bekke said.

Carlsberg had mulled a stricter drinking policy for years and finally decided to impose the new rules on April 1, prompting protests from the staff.

Bekke said around 800 workers went on strike Wednesday and around 250 walked off their jobs Thursday, resulting in interruptions to beer transports in and around Copenhagen.

Carlsberg's truck drivers joined the strike in sympathy — even though they are exempt from the new rules, Bekke said. The truck drivers are permitted to bring three beers from the canteen because they often don't have time to have lunch there.

The trucks have alcohol ignition locks preventing the drivers from driving drunk, he added.

Let me start by stating right up front. I don't think that you are FPM. I know that you are FPM. The way you break a post down into pieces is a style of posting a response that only one other poster on this board has ever used, and it is a very pompous method of response. You're also a Spelling Nazi. Both of these annoying traits were the stock and trade of, well, hmm..you!

Now while I find your politics insane even back in the days when you copped to your true identity, I still was always very resepctful of you as a person. Then FPM/you decided to leave the board, and in so doing you railed against everyone that you disagreed with. While it's true that I have been rather unforgiving in my own way towards people that voted for an unexperienced Maxist, I never stooped to your level in that "farewell post" that you posted. I get it. I mean I can understand getting upset when people don't see things the way that you do, but to call people that you once called friend (even if only in the cyber-friend sense of the word) Nazis, and "not even of the same species" was beyond over-the-top. It was intentionally dickish and very meanspirited. But that's the way FPM/you decided to handle things.

That would be enough for me to write you off as an obvious asshole, but you took it a few steps further. On Saturday 26th June Paul plays his first show in Wales in 31 years when he brings the tour to Cardiff’s massive Millennium Stadium. He last toured Wales with Wings in 1979. Finally Paul will appear as the headline act in London at this year’s Hard Rock Calling festival. Paul has appeared in Hyde Park twice before - the first time was when he opened and closed 2005’s Live 8 concert and the second when he came on stage as a surprise guest last summer at Neil Young’s show to perform The Beatles anthem ‘A Day In The Life’.
